The Breakdown of UX Design

  1. 1. The Breakdown of UX Design By Jenna Erickson, Codal Inc ______________________________________________________ What exactly is UX design and what all goes into the UX of a website or a mobile application? In general, a UX design company needs to cover five distinct areas when optimizing the UX of a site. Those include visual design, information architecture, interaction design, usability, and human computer interaction. More importantly, a UX design agency needs to also be knowledgeable of various disciplines in order to effectively improve the experience of the site. Some of those subjects include psychology, anthropology, graphic design, cognitive science, sociology, and computer science. Each of these components are all incredibly detailed but equally important. Below is a deeper insight on each of the five components of the UX design. 1. Visual Design Visual design is first and foremost the most obvious component of UX. This has to deal with the look and feel of the site. Within this it includes the colors, images and symbols used to capture the brand essence. Through the incorporation of visual design and psychology, UX design services are able to effectively communicate the messages of the brand. 2. Information Architecture The information architecture component of UX deals with the structure and organization of information. Depending on what you are developing the general flow of the information architecture will vary. For instance, if you are a mobile app design company you would need to follow a different flow from that of a website. The top elements involved in the information architecture include structuring, organization, labeling, and finding and managing.
  2. 2. 3. Interaction Design The primary concern of the interaction design is understanding what works best for the users. This takes from a combination of user expectations and the industry standards to a site or mobile application, such as setup, features, and gestures. Ultimately the goal in this function is to design a contextual interface that exceeds the user’s needs. 4. Usability Conducting usability testing is seeing how the user’s ability in using a system or application. This also includes covering accessibility so that all users have an ability to use the site or mobile application. For example, those that are color blind should be equally able to use the application, testing to ensure that is the case is what usability covers. 5. Human Computer Interactions The final element of UX looks at the overall performance aspect of the site or mobile application. As a top level explanation, this takes into account the implementation of site as a performance aspect in which evaluates the interaction of the computing system for the user. Conclusion Conducting UX of a website or mobile application is not a simplistic process. Rather it is one that requires tremendous attention to detail and thorough testing to meet not only user expectations but to stay up to date in the latest trends.
