LONG RANGE PROTOCOLS LTE-M will compete with SIGFOX and LoRa  LTE offer international roaming  Sigfox and LoRa do not support roaming But:  LTE-M – not existing yet  SIGFOX and LoRa – ready to use  SIGFOX and LoRa units are much cheaper Key requirement for biggest IoT projects: GLOBAL COVERAGE Possibilities of development:  SIGFOX and LoRa will become “WiMAX of IoT”  Coexistence – per use case – local vs global projects

OUR LORA LESSONS LEARNED LoRa experience:  Generally long range, even without line of sight  Connectivity issues in urban environment when there are multiple tall buildings on the way  We found a dead spot just behind the power station, below a high capacity power line – note that client packets were send to the gateway (and accepted) but client was unable to receive gateway ACK – so still one way possible (e.g. sensor to central server)  Some communication scenarios require rework, as star topology does not support node to node communication
  14. 14. BT / BLE – Field Testing & Lessons Learned BLE experience:  BLE is based on 2.4 GHz radio as there are many other technologies. While most technologies, including BLE has built-in some means to handle interference when in the sample place - device designers shall keep potential, occasional link quality decrease in mind (lower data transfer rate, connection loss or even data corruption in extreme conditions)  Be careful with dual-mode devices (e.g most of smartphones). They may switch from regular BT to BLE with (Apple) or without (Android) physical (MAC) address switch. This behavior has to be addressed when using MAC-based data.
