• Take 5 min to brainstorm a story in STAR format
• Applicants	have	2	minutes	to	tell	a	story	(either	success	or	failure)
• Interviewers	have	1	minute	to	provide	feedback	(I’ll	be	listening!)
o What	is	the	storyteller	missing	from	their	story?	(Situation)
o Is	it	specific	enough?
o What	is	confusing?	Is	the	skills	relevant?
o Are	there	step	by	step	actions?
o Is	the	story	appropriate	for	an	interview?
Skills Matrix Presentations
• You will prepare 2 stories for next tutorial!
– 1 accomplishment and 1 failure
• 3 minutes of talking time
– 1.5 minutes for accomplishment story, 1.5 minutes for failure story
– 1 minute of feedback from others

FAILURE STORIES SITUATION MIS-STEPS FAILURE LESSON ACTION STEPS • Context • Who? • What? • When? • Where? • What did I do wrong? • How am I accountable for the mistakes made? • What happened as a result of my actions? • What did I learn through this failure? • How did I overcome OR what will I do now?

FAILURE STORIES • Story clearly indicates what went wrong and accountability is taken • Majority of the story focuses on lessons learned (i.e. personal and professional development) • Student shows what they would do differently if faced with the situation again, or what they already did since (comeback story) • Generally aim to be: authentic, humble, accountable

  • 18. Marking rubric 3- Excellent Student has built a solid foundation for their resume/cover letter and interview prep moving forward. The diversity and quality of stories and proof of CAN/WANT/FIT is apparent. 2 – Satisfactory Student has a start to understanding their CAN/WANT/FIT to a specific posting though needs to be further developed. 1 – Unsatisfactory Student may struggle to prove their CAN/WANT/FIT to a specific job posting given the limited knowledge provided. Weight 6 Positive STAR Stories Story meets the majority of the criteria of STAR listed above and is: Logical Concise Employer Centric Story is complete and meets the majority of the criteria of STAR listed above however does not meet one or more of the following: Logical Concise Employer centric Story is either incomplete or does not clearly cover STAR format. X1 6x3= 18 marks possible 2 Failure Stories Story outlines the situation, mis- steps and lessons learned. Personal accountability and reflection is apparent. Majority of the answer is focused on the lesson learned. Story outlines the situation, and what went wrong. However personal accountability is not proven and/or student does not have “Plan B” if faced with this situation again. Student fails to outline story and lesson X1 2x3= 6 marks possible

Activity • Take 5 min to brainstorm a story in STAR format • Applicants have 2 minutes to tell a story (either success or failure) • Interviewers have 1 minute to provide feedback (I’ll be listening!) o What is the storyteller missing from their story? (Situation) o Is it specific enough? o What is confusing? Is the skills relevant? o Are there step by step actions? o Is the story appropriate for an interview?
  • 21. Skills Matrix Presentations • You will prepare 2 stories for next tutorial! – 1 accomplishment and 1 failure • 3 minutes of talking time – 1.5 minutes for accomplishment story, 1.5 minutes for failure story – 1 minute of feedback from others
