A 20-minute website? From scratch? With a newly-registered new domain name? No coding required? Can it be true? Why not come and see?
Based in Graiguecullen, Blacknight is a member of Carlow Chamber, and the leading Irish provider of web hosting and domain names. For Chamber Members for Charity, they’ve decided to have some fun with a live demonstration. Web design as theatre? What could possibly go wrong?
Along with the fun comes some helpful advice. Social media is great - but should you trust your business completely to Facebook? What if setting up your own website was easier than you think?
9. Why Have your own Website?

10. • Don’t run your business on someone else’s online
platform (e.g. Facebook). They can change the rules
anytime, or kick you out.
• You should make sure that your name is on your
domain, not your web developer’s.
• A domain name is your online address. It is the home
of your online brand and reputation. fishsticks.com ,
haircuts.ie, goatscheese.kitchen , hire.me
• There is a huge selection of new Top Level Domains to
choose from besides .COM and .IE. What about .FILM?
.MOVIE? .BLOG? .BOSTON?

Editor's Notes
We’ve all seen this image in the news the past week …
How many of you got a sick, sick feeling when you heard about the ransomware attack?
How many of you thought: there but for the grace of God go I?
How many of you checked your computers? How many of you checked your kid’s computers or your parents computers?
Malicious hacking. Extortion. Blackmail.
Malware
I was being interviewed on radio during the week and the interviewer pointed out – quite rightly – that it used to be the case that malware only wanted to make a point.
Authors of malware simply wanted to piss you off … your files have been trashed
But now – they’ve discovered that that they can make money – pay us a ransom and you can have your data back
And as we all know – when money is driving an activity – it gets a life of its own
Three elements to a website
Domain Name:
Address of your site
Registered with a domain registrar
Address
Domain Name System
An entry in a database
‘For this domain name, go to that computer’
Hosting
Physical location of your site
A computer housed in a data centre
Dedicated hardware, or virtual machine, or shared hosting
Windows, Linux OS
Apache or IIS Web Server
Software
HTML, Scripts, PHP, ASP, Database
Content Management System (CMS)
Wordpress (self hosted)
Plugins (SEO, Social, Photos …)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
e.g. postcode
Contains no information about the physical location
DNS is like the post office. Looks up the Eircode (domain name) and gets a physical address (IP address)
e.g. physical location
IP address is like a map reference
A physical location in the internet routing system
Computers in datacenters are like buildings with multiple apartments (websites)
e.g. furniture
Carpet or tiles
Gas or electric
Standard interface: i.e. doors and windows
House rules: shoes on or off? (e.g. comment policy)
IEDR research March 2017
Almost two-thirds of Irish consumers (64%) have little to no trust in businesses that use free email addresses like Gmail and Eircom
In contrast, 77% said they trust companies that use professional email addresses (e.g. customerservice@localbusiness.ie)
Consumers have four times more trust in a company that has a website (65%) versus one that does not (17%)
Companies that do not have a website, but rely solely on social media to connect to their customers, are seen as less trustworthy, with 63% of consumers saying they had low trust in them.
This is the breakdown of the data – of the 1000 Irish people who were surveyed.
And it’s not so much that we trust people with a website more – we trust people without one less!
Very revealing data here at the bottom – about email addresses.
You could simply have a domain name
And you could have a professional email address
And you could redirect web requests to your vimeo, or your youtube or your facebook or tumblr
IEDR just love doing market research – this was in April!
22 jobs – nominet which runs UK did very similar research on 2016 which corroborates this - they used tradespeople as a case study and got a figure of 21 extra jobs per year.
