Basic Facts:
Believed to have been constructed between 3,000
to 2,000 BC.
The earthen bank and ditch surrounding it is dated
to 3,100 BC.
The stones are dated to 2,400 to 2,200 BC.
The largest stones weigh 25 tons.
It is thought the stones were brought from 20 miles
away.
Smaller stones, bluestones, weighing up to 4 tons,
were brought from as far as 140 miles away.

Why was it built?
No one really knows.
Obviously, based on the effort it took to build, it was
important.
Most believe it was a Druid temple, but the stones
predate the Druids.

Based on a factual analysis of its design, it seems
to be a solar calendar to track the sun and moon
and the seasons.
Recent discoveries of bodies buried in the area,
also make it possible it was an intricate burial site.

Interesting Facts About Stonehenge:
1. There were originally only two entrances to it.
2. There are 83 stones.
3. 56 Aubrey pits are inside of it; their purpose is
unknown.
4. Charles Darwin concluded that earthworms were
responsible for the stones sinking into the earth.

It is owned by the Crown and managed by English
Heritage.
It is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

Of course, there are those who postulate other
theories about the purpose of Stonehenge.
