I do not have enough context from the single word "Friends" to generate a meaningful 3 sentence summary. The document appears to only contain the word "Friends" followed by "onskype", which provides little substantive information to summarize in a concise yet informative way.
This is Sam Ball, one of the guys I started the agency with, and the creative partner at Lean Mean Fighting Machine. He likes to wear this T-shirt now and again. It’s pretty funny. It’s pretty amusing to think that people actually rely on advertising for something useful.
It reminds me of an IPA study that was carried out a few years back, that sought to try and understand exactly what role advertising plays in society. Lots of people were interviewed….The findings were stark. On one hand XX% of people said that they thought advertising was rubbish. But on the other hand XX% of the same sample claimed that a world without advertising would be a worse place.
I sometimes think that we, agencies, the industry, struggle at a philosophical level with what we do. We sit very closely on the dinner table of industry to sectors like entertainment and film. That’s nice.
We rub shoulders every day with the tech companies that have forged their own sense of glamour whilst becoming the most profitable organisations in the world. This is good.
We pitch ourselves as an industry up there with other professional services, but usually just end up over-intellectualising why something will probably work.
nice. But has it deferred our attention away from the less-fanciful truth behind our existence? That we are here to flog the gear of our clients. And so, when I was first faced with the subject matter of this talk….an INTERNET-ENABLED SOCIETY, I felt compelled to try and tell me true and honest opinion. End with – so when I saw the title of this evening as intenab society – did I think of….

Do I think of….The ability for people to have a voice, and rally against the wrongs that governments and evil companies commit?

NO…I fess up, because when I think of an internet-enabled society, I think of…..People (and so collectively society) are becoming more reliant on it, more into it, than ever before. In my book, this means they are enabled. In my book this means there’s lots of chances to get them. To get them with advertising. To sell them stuff they ordinarily wouldn’t have wanted. Because we are agents of sales – employed, existing for one reason only, to flog the gear our clients produce. We should be interested in an internet-enabled society, not because of any worthy cause, but because it gives us an IN into their lives. A way, a means of selling stuff to them. Sounds a bit wrong doesn’t it?
Is this it? Nope. Will Apple stop releasing stuff? Will Google stand by their success? Will the Russian teenage boys playing around in their bedrooms with code stop? Nope, the pipeline of digital contraptions will continue to flow and as it does, society will become more and more digitally enabled. Web of things, sixth sense technology, mind control…This makes our jobs today, as inventive sales people utterly brilliant.
We heard at the beginning, people like advertising…at its best we add to the vibrant, provocative and colourful environment we live in.So let’s give them what they want. Let’s use the fact that people are becoming totally dependent on the internet to sell our clients wares, but let’s do it with a style and imagination, so that they enjoy the process as much as we do.
