What is literature?
Literature is a term used to describe written
or spoken material.
It is used to describe anything from creative
writing to more technical or scientific works.
Most commonly used to refer to works of the
creative imagination, including works of
poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. 
Why do we read literature?
Literature represents a language or a people:
culture and tradition.

It introduces us to new worlds of experience.

Literature is important to us because it speaks to
us, it is universal, and it affects us.

Early form of story telling
Believed to be originated in India
Aesop – Greek Slave, 620 B.C.
AESOP
Credited for most of the known
fables heard today.
His fables include “The Ant and the
Grasshopper,” and “The Tortoise
and the Hare.”

Features animals, plants & forces
of nature with human qualities
Handed down generation after
generation
Fables teach a lesson,
can relate to everyone,
and connects us with
other cultures.

Reflects cultural beliefs

Another lesson for the
tortoise and the Hare is
“Slow and Steady wins the
race”

Wolves to them symbolize what a fox does
to Europeans.
