day laborers
works to unify + strengthen member
organizations to develop leadership,
mobilize + organize day laborers in
order to protect and expand their
rights
have several national campaigns:migrant rights: Alto Arizona, Breaking
ICE’s hold
-labor rights: wage theft
-health and safety of day laborers
3. DHS after 9/11
● 1996 IIRIRA and Antiterrorism and Effective
Death Penalty Act
● 287g and Secure Communities
● Department of Homeland Security:
Shift toward militarization, privatization, and
blurring of criminal and immigration law.
● Building a physical border: $90 billion
● Detention Industrial Complex; CCA
4. A Snapshot of Undocumented
America
●
Estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in
US:76% of undocumented immigrants are Latinos
59% of undocumented immigrants are from Mexico
11% of undocumented immigrants are from Asia
20% of the nation’s undocumented immigrants live in
California
5. Why Deportations?
● There is a human cost to the policing
of the immigration crisis:-that cost if often
●
our communities who are targeted by these unjust
policies
● Deportations are about fear: Instill fear in our
communities. It’s not necessarily about
deportations, but the fear of them
● US economy needs low-cost labor to survive. If the
US got rid of all undocumented labor in the US, the
economy would collapse.
Separation of families:
-Of the undocumented people with children, 73% of
them have U.S. born children
-About 5.1 million children in 2009 had at least one
parent who was an unauthorized immigrant,
●
●
Deportation is one of the clearest
manifestations of the broken immigration
system
-Lack of just immigration reform. The 2013 bill
called for:
-double the number of border security agents
from 21,000 to 41,000
-700 miles of a new fence across the border
-ramp up Southern border security by $4.5
billion
-maintain secure communities program
-no age cap on DREAM act
Deportations and border enforcement easier
to fund and deal with than coming up with a
bipartisan immigration reform.
7. How does #not1more challenge
deportations?
“As the immigration debate continues,
#Not1More enters the discussion from the
place that touches people in concrete ways
and can offer tangible relief. By collectively
challenging unfair deportations and inequality
through organizing, art, legislation, and
action, we aim to reverse criminalization,
build migrant power, and create immigration
policies based on principles of inclusion.”

“The purpose of this Hunger
Strike is to demand the release
and halt the unnecessary
