ABOUT INNOVATE SOCIAL TECH: TECH TO UNITE US
The internet has revolutionised our world. Social Tech Trust exists to ensure that the ongoing tech revolution delivers positive and equitable social impact: that when our lives are transformed by tech, they are transformed for the better.
Tech can open up opportunities previously out of reach, creating inspirational change. Our experience shows that when social transformation is the driving force behind tech, it has the greatest potential to improve lives. This is why we want a world where people’s needs inform and shape tech from the outset, to deliver the best return for everyone.
We identify where tech has the greatest potential to transform lives, then back people and organisations to demonstrate what’s possible. Building on this knowledge, we seek out and join forces with others to create a supportive environment for those striving to realise the full promise of socially motivated tech.
Innovate Social Tech builds on a decade of pioneering grant funding, nurturing social tech ventures to realise their potential in a supportive ecosystem.
Last year we celebrated 5 years of the NT100, our global celebration of socially transformative tech, which shines a spotlight on the people and organisations using digital technology to change the world for the better. The NT100 is hosted on a website called the Social Tech Guide, which actually holds descriptions of over 1500 social tech ventures from around the world.
To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the NT100 we published insights on past and future trends in socially-transformative tech, called- Transforming lives with tech: a global conversation.
We also have been hosting a podcast series called Our Lives + Tech, which askes: “In a world that is advancing faster than ever before, how can we ensure that tech is used as a force for good? How can we guarantee that developments in tech such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality and blockchain, are inspired by social need? Host Adah Parris speaks with experts and activists each week to ask those all-important questions – and to share amazing stories of people using tech to change the world for the better.
To date we have invested in over 750 innovative social tech initiatives including Open Bionics, creators of the bionic Hero Arm; GiveVision that specialises in life-changing vision technology and Alice – bringing a new kind of transparency and trust to the charity sector using blockchain.
Innovate Social Tech is a new grant programme from Social Tech Trust that supports innovative ventures to transform lives with tech.
Innovate Social Tech builds on a decade of pioneering grant funding, nurturing social tech ventures to realise their potential in a supportive ecosystem. At Social Tech Trust, we recognise the game changing potential of grant funding and flexible support for early-stage innovation, enabling ventures to grow and attract further investment and scale their social impact.
We offer bespoke technical assistance alongside all of our grant funding, delivered by a team with extensive experience in the area - and great networks too.
“Tech to Unite Us” is part of Social Tech Trust’s Innovate Social Tech grant funding programme. It aims to demonstrate how tech can reach its transformative potential when it’s driven by one of the greatest opportunities of our time - equality.
We live in a unique moment in history: tech has made us more connected than ever; yet in other ways we are profoundly divided. We are at a juncture: if things continue as they are, the benefits that tech can deliver will accrue only to some, and the rest of us will be left further behind. That future is unacceptable to almost everyone. But this makes the moment ripe with opportunity to forge a shared future that makes tech work for everyone.
This is a call for radical new approaches that shift the balance of power to people and communities who want to challenge an unequal status quo. Tech is increasingly called upon to drive these shifts . . . but more radical and powerful still, is to look to people and communities to drive tech to unite us.
We’re divided by wealth: not only because 1% of us have 82% of the wealth - but because some of us have the power to create, own and share value that many of us do not. Open Utility is democratising this power, quite literally. Piclo, their peer-2-peer platform has the potential to allow us to trade renewable energy with one another.
We’re divided by where we live: depending on your post-code, your opportunities and outcomes can vary dramatically. For example, having access to quality mental health services in your community. But no matter where you live, you can access Big White Wall to find mental health support and an online community that cares. This is a social network with social purpose built into its core.
We’re even divided by our physical abilities. Society disables people with non-accommodating infrastructure and unsuitable alternatives. OpenUp Music uses imaginative tech to enable any young musician - regardless of physical capability - to create beautiful music with inclusive youth orchestras.
1. A social mission
You should have a social mission written into your organisation’s governance or be open to do so in order to be eligible for funding. We want your venture to be sustainable but to also maintain a social focus throughout.
2. Potential for transformative social impact at scale
Your team is working towards an ambitious vision of transformational social change, driving your venture to achieve it. Your team has a deep understanding of the social challenge, who is affected and how. The social challenge that drives your venture is recognised as critical (for example, through the Global Goals or UK government and civil society priorities). Your venture is addressing the root causes of the challenge or transforming the current approach to it. You understand where your venture fits into complex systems and markets, including the importance of context, unintended consequences, and feedback loops.
Your venture’s ambition is to scale - reaching as many people as possible, maximising your social impact. You have plans to access further funding and investment to facilitate growth alongside this grant. You can accept a grant with participation rights.
3. An innovative approach
Your desire for social transformation is driving new technological approaches to a social challenge. Your approach is different from (or building upon) existing work in this area - this could be through a creative business model, by harnessing emerging tech, or using existing tech in a new and transformative way. You know who your competitors and collaborators are. There may even be an opportunity for your venture to influence the development of the tech that you’re using so that social value becomes deeply embedded in its design going forward.
4. A working product or service; in the “demonstration stage” of your venture’s evolution
Your team has a working product or service that you will still be testing and improving through continued user testing and increasingly rigorous social impact evaluation. If you are still at a concept or paper prototype phase, or if you have an established product or service that has already received significant investment and is self-sustaining , then your venture is not at the right stage for Innovate Social Tech.
5. Evidence of your potential to create user, social and financial value
User Value - Your venture has validated demand: evidence that people want, and are able to use your product (either intermediary or end users). You will be improving your product with input from selected users gathered through observation, analytics, baseline survey, feedback, etc.
Social Value - you have identified some indicators that will enable you to measure and communicate the social impact of your product. You have a theory of change that you can start testing.
Financial Value - you can articulate a clear and testable Business Model hypothesis- including a clear value proposition. You have prospective partnerships or routes to market. You are exploring possibilities for additional funding (e.g. grants, crowdfunding, angel investment, etc.).
6. The right team
Your venture has a core team with the skills (including in-house tech - a must for Tech to Unite Us), capacity to deliver, values and commitment necessary to achieve your vision. You are growing your network of partners and advisors.
7. Registration as a UK-based organisation and the potential for social impact in the UK
Your venture is (or is part of) a registered (company, social enterprise, charity, local authority, cooperative) in the UK. Your venture has the potential for social impact in the UK, even if your current programmes or users are outside of the UK.
Up to £45k, which will be made as a grant with participation rights – see website FAQs for more information.
Technical assistance to support your growth, sustainability and capacity for transformative innovation, e.g. legal and business support, social impact measurement and reporting, marketing and communications.
Access to our extensive support networks, including mentors and investors.
A personal approach from the Social Tech Trust team – one that recognises the importance of flexibility for early-stage innovation.
Support to build your case for further investment.

Our Stage 1 online application form is designed to focus on sharing essential information and takes only a few hours to complete. The core of the application is your explanation of the issue, innovation, tech, users and your team. Your 90 second video link provides a chance for your team to pitch, so we can start to get to know you.
We are hosting two pre-application webinars to answer any questions you may have about applying for Tech to Unite Us.
Invitations to apply at Stage 2 will be made on Monday 6th August. If you’re invited to submit a Stage 2 application, you will have over three weeks to provide more depth to your application and submit a project plan and budget by Wednesday 29th August.
