If a puppy is not microchipped within eight weeks of its birth owners are given a 21 day notice to get their dog chipped, after which they will receive a £500 fine. Microchipping is a quick procedure in which a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected between a dog’s shoulder blades. Each tiny chip has its own number, which relates to the contact details of the owner. This information is stored on an approved database and the microchip can be scanned by local authorities and veterinary clinics if necessary. Great if your dog decides to go AWOL too. To support this, Heath Veterinary Clinic, in Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint are offering a special deal, offering dog microchipping for only £10 up until 6 April. During her apprenticeship she entered the National Apprenticeship Awards in the Intermediate ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category, and in September won the South East Regional heat! She was then shortlisted in the National finals where she went on to receive a National Highly Commended Award, and even got invited to a drinks reception at Number 10, where she met the Prime Minister. The Awards were judged on her contribution to the apprenticeship at Napier. Napier had never hired an apprentice before, it is now a large part of their recruitment strategy. But she also shone because of her contribution to her fellow apprentices, and off the back of this Freya is planning to launch The Apprentice Ambassador Network in March. This lady is destined for great things. www.titlesussex.co.uk 11

  15. 15. An actor’s life for me Each month Joe McGann explores the ups and downs of an actor’s life “In performance, an actor who does not listen to or truthfully communicate with the rest of the cast will pull focus; even the greatest of plays will be diminished by such onanism.” Trust me, I’m an actor. As a teenager, when I first expressed my desire to be an actor, the most common response was that I should consider a ‘proper job’ instead. Even now, 40 years later, my reply to the enquiry ‘and what do you do’ most often elicits a response of mild pity,or worse,a horrified, muttering withdrawal of the enquiring party lest they be bored senseless, left with the bill, or suffer some drunken molestation. I can think of few other professions which suffer such a universal, clichéd and wildly inaccurate reputation. I understand, of course, that clichés don’t evolve without a grain of truth, but my experience is that the huge majority of people in my profession couldn’t be more different and I shall try, in this column, to illustrate that the skillsets (to borrow an HR buzzword) required to make a living in this honourable profession are more deserving of respect than derision, and at the same time, try to give you the skinny on what the job truly entails To begin, let’s deal with the notion of the actor’s over inflated self- obsession. Acting is different from being, say, a musician, artist or writer in that as a general rule, you cannot practice your craft alone. Learning lines is for the most part a solo grind, but then we need other actors, stage management, directors, wardrobe – and of course an audience. In short, it’s a team game, and I’ve seen otherwise talented people fall away from the profession because they didn’t grasp this simple fact. In performance, an actor who does not listen to or truthfully communicate with the rest of the cast will pull focus, and so distort any sense of the convention of a believable world onstage; even the greatest of plays will be diminished by such onanism, and at worst it just becomes a bore-fest. To be a working actor one needs good people skills. Admittedly, this can be tricky. Rehearsal rooms can sometimes be full of attitude, and the clashing of cheekbones can be heard down the street as the insecure and needy try to thrust themselves forward. And I’m not saying that all successful actors have no ego; it’s certainly true that a healthy sense of self is required in order to play the less showy but integral parts of any script. ‘They also serve who only stand with spears’, you might say. Even a burning desire to be the best you can be, while admirable in many ways, needs to be tempered with the ability to recognise and execute what is best for the job. If you’re in it solely for yourself,be prepared for bitter disappointment. You’ll not be asked back. Thisbalancedsenseof self isalsovitalif you’regoing to weather the enormous amount of rejection all actors experience. It doesn’t matter to anyone that you believe with all your heart that you were born to play the part or that – in X-Factor parlance – you know that this is the life-changing opportunity you and your mum have always known would be yours. As an example, I’ve lost more than one job for being too tall to pair with the actress playing opposite me; it’s frustrating but understandable. There’s never going to be the time/money to dig a trench every time they need to fit us both into a two-shot. We learn to accept it, process the disappointment, and prepare ourselves for the next opportunity. These constant lessons in life promote a healthy pragmatism and keep us away from the all-too- common modern notion that simply by wanting something enough, we will cause its manifestation. The people in my profession who have learned these lessons are among the most well rounded and capable people I know, and so vastly different from the clichéd view of the actor as to be the polar opposite. I’m not embarrassed to say that I’m rarely happier than in the company of others in my profession, playing make believe, which for 35 years has been my proper job, my education and, more than once, my salvation. Which is another story. Pass me my fedora and cane, and I’ll see you next issue. T: @JosephMcGann T I T L E C o L u m n I s T #title2016 www.titlesussex.co.uk 15

  17. 17. Weddings around the WorldAge-old traditions, lucky charms, all-out costumes and bombastic venues… We must be talking weddings. Charlotte Horlock had a wander round the globe and picked out six wedding ceremonies from different cultures that embrace the wild and wonderful… Indian In Indian culture, marriage symbolises not just the sacred union of two individuals, but two families. Months before the ceremony, the families meet to perform rituals and to present the bride and groom with a stack of OTT gifts. Further pre-wedding ceremonies include the Haldi, a relaxing hot bath during which turmeric (Haldi), oil and water is applied to both the bride and groom (although naughtiness is strictly forbidden until wedding night), and the Mehendi, where the bride’s hands and feet are painted with gorgeous Henna patterns. On the day of the wedding, the bride dolls up in a sari or a lehenga, decorated with gold and silver embroidery. The groom makes his entrance on a horse or sometimes an elephant. The final moments of the ceremony are the most poignant, as the bride will say goodbye to her family and leave to live with her husband. With so much colour, vibrancy, food and fun, an Indian wedding is truly a festival in itself! T I T L E W E D D I N G S #title2016 1. www.titlesussex.co.uk 17
  18. 18. Chinese A Chinese wedding ceremony involves a fair amount of prep, too. It’s all down to a fortune-teller to predict whether the marriage will be a success, based on the bride and groom’s full names and their zodiac animals (fingers crossed it’s not the year of the rat.) The bride is expected to bond with her in- laws long in advance by making them tea and helping them with the chores. At the wedding ceremony, the bride will wear a red skirt, as the Chinese believe red foreshadows delight. Music and firecrackers mark the arrival of the groom (or sedan) at the wedding place. The bride will then be led along a swanky red carpet before vows are exchanged, their emphasis on loyalty and looking after one another, especially in sickness and poverty. The lucky couple get to retreat to their bridal chamber while guests submit to the toasts and speeches part. Wine is poured to the brim of a cup but mustn’t spill over. These traditions have been maintained for thousands of years, but in recent years (especially after the founding of modern China), people have tended to discard some of the details and embrace more simple ways. Japanese The Japanese are renowned for that magical bride every little girl dresses up as, at some stage in their lives. Before the ceremony (or shinzen shiki), the rehearsal takes place, during which the bride’s mother lowers the veil for her daughter, signifying the last act that a mother can do before giving her child away. Traditionally, the Japanese bride is then painted white from head to toe, declaring her maiden status to the Gods. She has two choices of headgear: one, the watabōshi, a white hood, and the other, the tsunokakushi, serving to hide her ‘horns of jealousy.’ On a less intense level, it also symbolises the bride’s intention to become a gentle and obedient wife. The ceremony is held at a Shinto shrine, and the father of the bride, as in Western ceremonies, walks his daughter down the aisle. Recently though, a Western-style wedding has become the choice of many couples in Japan, and these are generally held in a modest little chapel or hotel. 2. 3. T I T L E W E D D I N G S#title2016
  19. 19. Russian A Russian wedding lasts between two days and a week packed with singing, dancing, drinking and toasts. Once the groom arrives at the venue, he must pay a ransom for the bride (a term in Russian known as vykup nevesty.) The groom will usually give jewellery, before the bride’s parents bring out a woman (or man) that is not the actual bride but dressed up like one, covered in a veil so the groom can’t see the face. If you haven’t already guessed, these guys are pretty big on comedy. The ceremony is held in a church and is divided into two parts: the Betrothal and the Crowning. During the Betrothal, the priest blesses the couple and presents them with lighted candles – exciting for about five minutes. This is followed by the exchanging of the crowns, and these babies are as colourful as they come. In the past, the couple would wear their wedding crowns for eight days, but now they are removed at the end of the service. Phew. And as if that wasn’t enough, look out for the ‘bread and salt’ tradition. In the old days, the groom’s mother presented the couple with bread and salt at the groom’s family house when the bride moved in to live. Nowadays, as a rule, the bread and salt ritual takes place right there in the wedding. 4. www.titlesussex.co.uk 19
  20. 20. Scottish This is the one wedding where the groom really makes an impression. Since the 16th Century, the kilt has been the traditional – and sexy – dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands. At a Scottish wedding, the groom will wear his kilt, sometimes coupled with a dagger. And yes, it’s true, a true Scotsman won’t put on underwear. All Scots believe in good-luck charms, and when better to seize one of these than on your wedding day? A sixpence in the bride’s shoe or a sprig of white heather in the bouquet are long-standing traditions in Aberdeenshire and Angus. The ‘Wedding Scramble’ is also said to bring the couple fortune. As the bride steps into the car, her father will throw a handful of coins for the children to collect. After the ceremony, the Scottish Quaich (pictured below) or ‘Loving Cup’ will be passed round for the wedding party to sip. This is a two-handled silver bowl filled with whisky, usually by the bride. Scottish weddings are all about fun, frolic, dance and beer. Lots of beer. 5.
  21. 21. Greek Think sand, sea, sunshine and Mamma Mia. We’ve added a Greek wedding in at number six for its postcard setting and quirky traditions. If you’re getting married in Greece, the whole town will know about it and expect to be invited. Before the ceremony, the bride lists all the names of her unmarried girlfriends on the sole of her right shoe. Sounds a bit degrading, but there’s a method to the madness. At the end of the night, the names of the girls that have rubbed off are said to be the next to get married – better than haphazardly throwing a bouquet and watching it get torn apart by your drunken girlfriends, right? Taking the term ‘groomsman’ literally on his wedding day, the groom’s best man (or koumbaros) becomes his barber when he shaves off his beard. On the bright side, the groom’s new mother-in-law will feed him honey and almonds, symbolising her affection and generosity. Greece is renowned for its backdrop of gorgeous sandy beaches and white houses, and weddings here are nothing short of magnificent. 6.

  23. 23. T I T L E W E D D I N G S #title2016 RENEW YOUR HAIR WITH NUYU HAIR Daniel White caught up with the founders of NuYu Hair Rebeca Aparicio and Marianna Angeli What is NuYu Hair? NuYu Hair Ltd is a British-owned independent and bespoke hair brand offering products such as ¾ hairpieces and clip-in fringes of a deluxe quality. How did NuYu Hair begin? We have collectively used hairpieces for over 15 years. Frustrated with the need to wear two hairpieces at a time to achieve the desired full bodied look, NuYu Hair was born out of a desire to create a range of hairpieces which could create the desired look in under five minutes. What sets you apart from the competition? With the UK hairpiece market flooded with poor quality, low heat resistant and limited colour palettes, NuYu Hair is set to offer the closest match to human hair in colour and weight, at a fraction of the price of real hair extensions, with a scientifically tested hair fibre. Offering a deluxe weight of 300-400g, they’ll enable women to style their hairpiece as desired to a maximum heat of 180 degrees. Who are these for? BEAUTIFUL BRIDAL LOOKS FOR 2016 To celebrate our wedding special we teamed up with 7two9 photography, hair stylist Melodie Pope and MUA Alex Crown to try out four looks straight from the SS16 catwalk bridal trends Photographer: 7two9 Photography, www.7two9.com Production manager: Frida Clementz Hair: Melodie Pope, Shoreham Hair Lounge, www.facebook.com/ Melodie Shoreham Hairlounge Quote ‘Title Wedding’ for a surprise gift on all wedding hair bookings Makeup: Alex Crown, www.alexcrownmakeup.co.uk Makeup assistant: Sofaya Hussein, Headblush MUA Models: Alexandra E. 25. 25. ALEXANDRA Melodie Pope (hair stylist): Softly blow-dried to create body and volume to fine, highlighted hair, with small detail at the back designed to disguise the tiara ends and to place small flowers for elegant detail. Products - mousse applied dry and blow-dried bouncy, setting each section to allow stronger volume. A fine but strong hairspray was used to secure position of the hair, none-sticky. Alex Crown (MUA): Here I focussed on accentuating Alexandra’s big beautiful blue eyes by sweeping a light dusky pinky rose- coloured eye shadow across the lids and added a little on lower lashes too, followed by lashings of (waterproof) mascara. For the foundation I used Chanel’s Vitalumiere in shade 20 and for the cheeks, I added a cream blush to keep the look fresh and modern. I added a glowing highlight on top of her cheekbones and gently contoured Alexandra’s cheeks with a bronzy blush. Eyebrows were lightly filled and as Alexandra had such naturally rosy red lips I just added a touch of Chanel Wild Rose lip gloss Makeup Tip: Add a pop of shimmery champagne-coloured eye shadow in inner V corner of eye as this helps open them up. 26. 26. MAIKA Melodie Pope (hair stylist): While going with the natural curl of the hair, soft curls were designed to enhance the Afro hair and allow the natural strength of it hold them in - pinning one side with a flower gently allows the bride to enhance any colour scheme they choose for their special day and connect the two together. Products - serum was applied evenly to the hair and small sections were curled with a light hairspray being used on each section. Serum was used once curls were cool to break up the corkscrew effect. Alex Crown (MUA): For Maika I used a Bobbi Brown cream foundation stick in just the areas needed to even out her skin. I then added a light champagne-coloured eye shadow across the lids and applied a thin gel liner on the upper lids close to the lash line to accentuate Maika’s beautiful eyes. Black mascara was then added, with a highlighter on top of cheekbones, down the centre of the nose and on the Cupid’s bow and inner corner of eye. Her eyebrows were filled in slightly and groomed using a fine pencil by Mac. For the lips, I mixed a Mac coral lipstick with some gloss to keep the look simple but elegant. Makeup Tip: Just be careful not to get a highlighter that’s too glittery for the skin, as this can look unnatural in daylight. Sparkly veil £120, Catherine Francis Bridal Boutique Flowers, The Brighton Flower Company
  27. 27. ALEXANDRA Melodie Pope (hair stylist): A soft French plait around the front of the head brings attention to the face and stronger make up can be applied; with soft, gentle barrel curls at the back this allows the veil to be placed securely and invisibly. A vintage sparkly comb brings a twinkle for the bride and brings the plait and barrel curls together. Products - mousse applied dried and bouncy curls were blow-dried in the hair. A strong hairspray was used on each section as the barrel curls were placed at the back. Alex Crown (MUA): For a more modern take, I added a beautiful cream eye shadow in a bronzy colour across the lids and added some on the lower lash line. This gives a modern, smoky feel that’s not too heavy and great for the bride that wants a stronger look. For the lips, we added a deep pink lip liner in Disco by Topshop. Makeup Tip: Cream shadows are amazing as they are long lasting and don’t budge - so are perfect for weddings and so easy to apply - you can just use your fingers but I’d recommend using a smallish brush for lower lash line. ‘Posy’ Hair comb £95 and Ribboned veil £40, Catherine Francis Bridal Boutique
  28. 28. MAIKA Melodie Pope (hair stylist): First curling the hair so that the natural curl is enhanced, the bride then had three separate ponytails down the back of her head. This is great on thick hair as it allows security, which is important to stay in place all day! Large pins were used to keep the positioning of wrapped hair around the ponytails and hair was secured back - this stops any unwanted frizz. Products - Serum was applied on dry hair before curling, to maintain no frizz and a sleek curl was enhanced. A very light hairspray was used as the grips were placed and a light spray around the hairline to make sure all tiny hairs were covered. This also gives shine to Afro hair when applied correctly. Alex Crown (MUA): Maika has amazing lips, so a deep plum colour was added. Topshop lip liners come in great colours - this was called Deception. As the lips were strong I added just a little more eyeliner using Mac’s gel liner in ‘black track’ with an angled brush. I wanted the look to be clean and elegant and quite minimal. Tiara £115, Catherine Francis Bridal Boutique Flowers, The Brighton Flower Company

  30. 30. T itle photo shoots are ordinarily more than a little bit crazy, with people everywhere and runners helping models in and out of different outfits between shots, but this one was quite different. This issue we have taken a break from the clothing and just allowed hair and makeup to speak for themselves, which made for a far more relaxed set! On location at the 7two9 studio with Brighton-based Swedish photographer duo Anja Barte Telin and Moa Thörneby, the brief was to create and showcase beautiful bridal looks to inspire our readers. Our stunning models, Alexandra and Maika (MK Model Management) were transformed into blushing brides with make up applied by Alex Crown make up artist, assisted by Sofaya Hussein. Melodie Pope from Shoreham Hair Lounge created different looks for both models with plaits, ringlets and soft curls and, yet again, we were reminded how incredibly lucky we are to work with such talented and creative people. Melodie and Alex were also patient enough to answer endless questions from Title’s Frida and myself about hair, make up and the vast array of products we were itching to get our hands on. No bridal look would be complete without flowers or sparkle of course and we were thrilled to be able to use accessories and veils kindly loaned by Catherine Francis Bridal Boutique of Arundel and flowers by The Brighton Flower Company. We loved this shoot and in fact the only thing that was remotely difficult was narrowing down the choice of Anja and Moa’s images and deciding which would make the final cut!
  31. 31. TELL US WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO I’m Michelle, born and bred in Brighton I’ve had many careers and done loads of travelling, but over the last few years I‘ve established a beauty business that I’m truly passionate about. I focus on bridal beauty and brows. Bridal services include hair and makeup as well as various hen party packages. From my home salon I have built up a great client base for brow services, HD brows and threading. Now I have upped my brow game to offer the revolutionary method of microblading! WE’RE REALLY INTERESTED IN THIS MICROBLADING… WHAT IS IT?! Epibrow, microblading or ‘eyebrow embroidery’ as it is also known, is the latest revolutionary, freehand, feather-styling technique. An Epibrow treatment gives a semi- permanent natural brow look and is unlike any other semi-permanent makeup procedure, and unlike other techniques, is not reliant upon natural hair being present. This makes the Epibrow treatment perfect for those suffering from alopecia, trigonometric, or any other condition that causes hair loss (over-plucking for example). The eyes have iT We like to keep our eye on new trends and we’re loving this new microblading treatment, offering semi-permanent eyebrows. Keep those brows on fleek baby! HOW DOES IT WORK? Epibrow gives the effect of ultra-fine, delicate hair strokes that blend within the natural brow. Using the natural landscape of the client’s brow – whether it’s too thin, too plucked, or patchy – this treatment allows you to restore or change the eyebrow shape. If the client’s brows are gone completely, an Epibrow treatment can re-create an entirely new brow for them. Using a specially designed micro-blade, natural 3D hair strokes are placed under the epidermis for the ultimate tailored brow. The pigments used in the Epibrow treatment have been specially formulated to match the original eyebrow in order to achieve a natural look. This cutting edge treatment is ideal for enhancing and defining brows and will give the client the brows they’ve always dreamed of; a totally bespoke shape. We do not use stencils. HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? 12-18 months; but it is recommended to have a yearly top up to keep the look fresh. The pigments break down over time and do not leave a stain like tattoo ink would. Microblading is not a tattoo. DOES IT HURT?! A scratching sensation at the beginning can be felt whilst anaesthetic is administered, but this provides comfort throughout the rest of the procedure. CAN YOU WORK WITH ALL SHAPED BROWS AND SKIN TONES? Of course, the pigments I work with are ‘smart’ pigments, they blend to your skin’s natural undertones to complement the natural brow hairs that already exist. The colour range can also be mixed to match any skin undertones that exist. FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE TREATMENTS?! Definitely the bridal hair and airbrush make-up services.Alsomybridesareencouraged to have a brow makeover with me in the run up to the big day. Finally, hen party pamper packages are right up there; brides-to-be and their hens receive top class treatments from my therapists, including a glass of bubbly, for a true relaxing day at their chosen location. This ‘organised fun’ is normally too expensive and too forced to actually enjoy yourself, however, there are alternatives. If you want to go retro with your best friend’s last night of freedom then why not book a ‘Walk and Wine’ tour with Fizz on Foot? The tours begin in the beautiful Sussex village of Alfriston before a local walk, as Fizz on Foot managing director Ian Shearer explains, “We take people for a walk on the beautiful South Downs National Park, followed by wine tasting at one of our local wine estates.” You’ll visit a vineyard in East or West Sussex where you’ll see first hand how the wine is produced as well as sampling the vino before lunch on site. The evening is free to organise your own entertainment but can also be taken care of by the team if you wish. “The party can be totally bespoke,” explains Ian. “So if they want to have some dance training of Le Roc or Salsa after the wine tasting, we can easily organise that. We can build in anything they would especially like and we also transport them to the venues and home afterwards!” The tours can last from one to four days and can also include a cruise to foreign wineries so whether you’re looking for one more night of fun before the big day or a long weekend break away, Fizz on Foot is trip you have to take. 36. 36. EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORYYour wedding day – whilst not necessarily being the best day of your life, despite your expectations – is definitely going to be one of the most memorable, and the wedding photographer sees it all. We asked some Sussex photographers to pick one of their favourite wedding shots and tell us the story behind it… I’ve chosen this image from Sarah and Matt’s wedding because I love the light-hearted, carefree feel of it, and because the combination of the car and location on a country road as we made our way to my favourite local wedding venue – Pangdean Barn – really captures a slice of Sussex. I think it also really gives a sense of transition, both metaphorically from unmarried to married, and from one part of the day’s events to another. Sarah and Matt’s wedding was beautifully styled, meticulously planned and FUN. They were married in a church in Hove, then I took this picture on the way to the party (with a slight detour to take some wedding portraits at Devil’s Dyke along the way). And what a party it was! A real highlight was the surprise singing waiters Sarah and Matt had booked, who were totally brilliant and who got all the guests standing, laughing, clapping, cheering and singing. The energy and warmth in the room were palpable, and that glow lasted all throughout the reception. I love my job, and getting the opportunity to be present for moments like those is exactly the reason why. 37. 37. We had the pleasure of documenting the wedding of Suki and Thea. A celebration of love that was as beautiful and colourful as the couple were themselves. For us a wedding is the perfect photoshoot. It’s a fashion shoot, documentary photography and fine art project all wrapped up in one love story. It’s always something magical to capture someone’s special day through the lens of a camera, and this celebration of love was no exception. It was an amazing day and their love and happiness was totally contagious. 7two9 Photography www.7two9.com 07955 394620 7tw o9 Photograp hy T I T L E W E D D I N G S#title2016 www.titlesussex.co.uk38
  38. 38. This has to be one of the most fun weddings that I’ve photographed. Sarah and Dave are a really chilled couple and were totally up for having a laugh during their “bride and groom” shoot. The reception was held at The Coach House, in the old Brighton Lanes and a very short distance to the seafront. Brighton beach was a no-brainer for the location of the shoot and being mid-week (with the clouds and weather forecast making me nervous) we had the whole beach to ourselves. We walked from Brighton Pier to the Bandstand hijacking the carousel, some deck-chairs and a boat along the way. We flagged down the life-guard to borrow his quad bike for some shots and even posed by another couple’s vintage wedding car that was parked in the street. After totally losing track of the time, we had to jump in a cab to get back to the guests in time for lunch. The rain started as we entered The Coach House but by that time nobody cared, it was time to party! 39. 39. Dave and Grace were married at Southend Barn in Chichester last November, and having both worked in the theatre, I knew they would be a lot of fun to work with, and up for anything! I was right, it was raining on their wedding day, yet they refused to let it stop them having amazing photos outside in the beautiful gardens. Despite the rain, this couple did not stop giggling. The love between these two and the happiness they shared on their wedding day really shows in all of their romantic portraits and this is definitely one of my favourites. 40. 40. The wedding of Dee and Des took place at the Seattle Hotel, Brighton on Fri 2 May 2014. A fabulous day, it was very relaxed and Dee wanted the photography to mirror this atmosphere. Having a photojournalistic background, I like to capture candid photos through the day, to get to the heart and soul of the couple. I try to blend into the day rather than be pushy and feel I get very natural photos as a result. Dee and Des had lots of family attend, with them even providing live music to accompany the reception. There was so much happiness and so many smiles making for many great photos. While guests enjoyed a drink after the ceremony I took Dee and Des to the beach to get the photo you see here. As they live in Brighton we wanted to get some shots that took advantage of the local surroundings – it was quite breezy, we thought we would make the most of it by letting the confetti fly! I love this photo because it shows their happiness while looking quite quirky. In terms of choice the possibilities are endless, you can source almost any flower at any time of the year if you’re prepared to pay for them but the team at The Brighton Flower Company recommend using locally sourced seasonal flowers to get the best value for money. Roses are readily available all year round and red varieties are particularly striking in a winter bouquet, either alone or contrasted with white and finished with green foliage or berries. Spring or summer brides may choose to opt for pastel shades of pink or vibrant blues and purples using tulips, peonies and locally sourced garden roses, whilst a striking autumnal bouquet can be achieved with calla lilies and marigolds. 43. 43. If ever there was someone better named to give you kissable lips, Teresa Kis would take some beating. Keen to pucker up for some Valentine smooching, Title went along to put the Kis to the test… Teresa Kis is currently enjoying fame as THE name for the best lips in town, giving you the best pout without any trout. But there’s much more to her; she is a highly qualified aesthetic treatments practitioner and qualified nurse offering a range that includes not just lip enhancements but medical grade peels, Botox, fillers, and even the famous ‘Vampire Facial’ – the platelet-rich plasma therapy made famous by celebs (you know who they are!). WHAT TO EXPECT As with many of these treatments, there’s obviously needles involved and so therefore there’s topical anaesthetic. Teresa goes through the treatment with you as a consultation beforehand, not just to tell you how it works and find out what you want, but also to really manage expectations. “I had a very senior lady in one day,” she explains, “and I really needed to let her know that whilst fillers could smooth out some of the lines and wrinkles, there is a limit to the difference it can make in terms of lifting her skin. It’s important we let clients know what the limitations are.” “Teresa really is an expert with the lips. Perfect shape, very little stinging, no bruising… just plumped up sexy lips” SEALED WITH A KIS T I T L E B E A U T Y#title2016 www.titlesussex.co.uk44
  44. 44. A PROFESSIONAL APPROACH Her honesty is refreshing – there are ‘therapists’ practicing the use of dermal fillers and Botox who are untrained and unregulated, and it’s hard sometimes to know if you’re in safe hands. Teresa is not only a trained nurse, she has worked for the clinical company that makes the fillers, training other practitioners how to use them, for more than 12 years. So you’re really in the hands of a master here. “I use Emervel,” she explains, “because it causes very little swelling and soreness. But also sometimes Juvederm. I try to offer my clients the best advice and suggest the right treatments and products for them. I do the backs of hands too, so they’re also soft and plumped up. People forget the hands. They have a youthful face, then you see the backs of their hands...” HOT LIPS! OK, so we think we might have to go back and try everything she does, because Teresa really is an expert with the lips. Perfect shape, very little stinging, no bruising… just plumped up sexy lips. We are impressed with the results – in fact struggling even to drag our eyes away from the mirror to actually leave the clinic. WHERE CAN YOU FIND HER? Teresa likes to reach as many areas of Sussex as possible. Her favourite place is her clinic in Peacehaven (pictured) but you can find her at several locations in Sussex including Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne and at the Arundel Clinic, so call or check to find out which days and where. She is also really happy to do private bookings with small groups, so if you’ve got a little celebration coming up, maybe that’s a fun thing to do all together. 46. 46. T I T L E W E D D I N G S #title2016 Seven of our favourite bridal suites in SussexOK, admit it. Even if you’re not getting married there’s something awesome about the bridal suite in a hotel. We had a good nose round some of them in Sussex and here’s just a few of our favourites. Angel House, Hove Dripping with original Regency period features this ’Best Bedroom’ suite really lives up to its name. It occupies the whole 2nd floor and is likely to be one of the most memorable rooms you’ll ever stay in. With canopied bed and stunning original Regency fitted furniture, it’s also got an adjoining elegant bathroom complete with an opulent central bath and shower plus all the luxuries you would expect to find in a five star hotel. A sumptuous continental breakfast will be served to your room the following morning so you can enjoy every last minute here in delightful privacy. www.angel-house.com Goodwood If you get married at Goodwood the bridal suite is complimentary for the happy couple. There are a number of different rooms but we love this one with its four-poster and elegant styling. And,depending on the chosen package, the bride and groom get a lovely gift, like membership to the members’ clubhouse the Kennels, up to four months membership to the health club, a beautiful planning book or other goodies such as chauffeur driven Rolls Royce rides, detox pamper days or a golf buggy with personalised signage. www.goodwood.co.uk
  47. 47. The Grand Hotel, Brighton This stately beauty is one of our favourite hotels, never mind the suites. A recent renovation and more work to come is preserving the beauty of this grand duchess and we just love the bedrooms. We picked this suite because it’s got beautiful views, its own balcony, bags of space and loads of light. It’s also got a lovely seaside feel with those pastel tones, distressed wood and of course the silver starfish! Bridal packages also mean you can arrange champagne, flowers, chocolates etc to be in the room. www.grandbrighton.co.uk Pelirocco Hotel, Brighton If you wanted something really different for your, ahem, first night together, it doesn’t come much more unique than the Kraken’s Lair at the Pelirocco. This three-room suite is decorated in a nautical style with tons of crazy features including an 8ft round bed, mirrored ceiling canopy and pole-dancing area. The large planked bathroom includes plunge bath, with double monsoon shower-heads, and twin basins, and there’s also a private courtyard, and its own street entrance for added privacy. www.hotelpelirocco.co.uk www.titlesussex.co.uk48 T I T L E W E D D I N G S#title2016

The Cristal suite, shown here (left), is the loft suite and the best room in the hotel. A wooden floored room with an 8ft by 8ft size bed, widescreen plasma TV, stunning B&W Zeppelin iPod docking station, twin bath tubs in the bedroom, double walk in showers (wet room), large corner suede sofa and a small private roof terrace with a telescopic sea view. www.hotelduvin.com/Brighton Hilton Brighton If you’re looking for something with clean lines and an amazing view of the sea, the Hilton has some lovely rooms too. We like these for their sheer size and their simplicity. Not everyone wants four poster beds and frilly bits. And you could honestly move a family of six into these suites. We particularly love the marble bathrooms – this is for happy couples who like things nice and understated. www.hilton.com/brightonmet Ashdown Park, Wych Cross One of the loveliest country hotels in Sussex, Ashdown Park has that stately home feel, complete with lakes, woodland, and its own stunning chapel which all go to make it a perfect location for a wedding. And the suites are lovely – just the thing to feel a bit Downton and luxurious. Revamps have seen some lush new fabrics and tones added but the splendid mansion feeling is still very much in evidence. Heavenly. www.ashdownpark.com

Lisa Moore explains how to cope with everything at once Planning a wedding is tough. It’s stressful and that won’t help you if you’re looking to lose weight and tone up. Stress really doesn’t help with fat loss, your cortisol levels become raised and if they stay high then your body will store fat instead of burning it. It’s so frustrating, you do everything you think to lose weight; eat well, exercise hard, but the fat just stubbornly stays there. Here are a few simple tricks you can try, and some of them will also help you with organising the event too. 1.Visualise – Set aside ten minutes a day and picture your perfect day. Picture the weather, venue, clothes and how happy you feel. Breathe all this in to your body. 2. Go for a walk – Take the time, go out with your partner, hold hands, laugh, smile and just walk. 3.Keep hydrated – Drink plenty of water and cut out the caffeine and stimulants from your diet. 4. Sleep – Get to bed by 10pm. 5. Keep a journal – Write down how you feel, make a list of the things you need to do the next day/week. Get it all out of your head EVERY DAY. Alloftheabovewillhelpyoutofocusand reduce cortisol in the body. Combine these five things with great nutrition plus regular resistance exercise and you’ll look and feel amazing on your wedding day. We are a working vineyard and one of England’s leading producers of sparkling wines, so being able to toast the occasion with the wine produced on the estate makes for a truly personal experience. We can sit down and do a tasting with the brides and grooms, and they are able to choose the wine they want on their special day.” A PERFECT SPOT THEN? “We host less than 10 weddings a year so we’re quite exclusive, and being a marquee venue means that couples have the flexibility to bring their vision to life. The vineyard provides the backdrop for many beautiful photographs, with the vines, ponds and bluebell woodlands.” GREAT LOCATION Bluebell Vineyard Estates is nestled in the hamlet of Furners Green, near the famous Bluebell Railway and historic Sheffield Park. 55. 55. With love in the air, Fal Blake gets the lowdown from Peter James on his wedding, and offers her top tips on how to choose the right wedding suit. We also take a dive into some SS16 trends including how to wear white if you’re not the bride Peter James – Fal Blake – Fashion trends
  56. 56. Photo: Kenny McCracken A CUT ABOVE Each month Fal Blake introduces us to one of the many fascinating people to come through the doors of flamboyant tailor Gresham Blake Photos: Graham Franks “Black is Peter’s signature colour, as he feels it’s an appropriate look for authors of crime novels” A s we have dedicated this month’s Title Magazine to weddings, I thought it would only be appropriate for me to introduce a client that we have made a wedding suit for. Who I have chosen needs very little introduction – meet Mr Peter James. James is one of the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller novelists. His Roy Grace detective novels have sold over 17 million copies worldwide and the series has now been translated into 36 languages. Peter first came across Gresham Blake around 10 years ago; he says that it was our eye-catching window that drew him to our shop. Imagine my excitement measuring his inside leg! I happened to be reading one of the novels from the Roy Grace series. If you haven’t yet indulged in this series of books – do so straight away. Talk about a series of books that are unputdownable. It ticks every box for me – crime, suspense, murder mystery – based in and around Brighton – with lots of familiar characters playing cameo roles. We’ve even been lucky to have been included. In one of the books a piece of cloth belonging to the murder victim was found in a chicken run. Roy Grace asked Gresham to identify the type of material the cloth was made out of. We decided to turn this chapter into a lining fabric – and manufactured a special collection of coats with it. So when Peter announced his engagement to the very special Lara Lovey and asked us to make his wedding suit we were thrilled. Black is Peter’s signature colour, as he feels it’s practical especially when travelling, yet also portrays a professional and appropriate look for authors of crime novels. Of course there is no such thing as just black and in the end we settled for a medium weight, super 100 black wool, Dormeuil cloth. The lining of the suit was particularly special – Peter commissioned us to design and create a bespoke lining. We also added some very personal touches to the suit – my favourite, a set of handcuffs, the Roy Grace symbol – embroidered underneath the top collar. In terms of the design, there’s a hint of 60s mod feel to the cut of the suit; slim fit, double breasted lapels, tapered trousers and an ever-so-slightly shorter jacket. www.titlesussex.co.uk58
  57. 57. T I T L E W E D D I N G S #title2016 Want to knoW more about the Wedding? How did you meet? Was it love at first sight? We met in a ski lift in Courcheval. I was skiing with my mate, Rob Kempson, and Lara was on a week’s skiing with two friends, one of whom was her ex-boyfriend, although I didn’t realise he was her ex at the time. They clambered into the eight-seater gondola and sat down opposite us. Lara looked at me and said ‘nice helmet’. (I do have a very fancy ski helmet all leather and chrome). I said ‘How can you see?!’ We got on instantly, and totally connected, and it was a while before we realized we were both from Sussex. I assumed Lara was with her boyfriend and we were all just mates meeting a few times over the next few days. Some months later, we decided to have a get together. Lara turned up minus her boyfriend, and I’d never seen her without a ski helmet on before… the rest, as they say is history. Tell us about Lara’s dress Lara wore two different dresses as we had three wedding events. The first part was the official wedding ceremony, held at Jeremy’s Restaurant in beautiful Borde Hill. For this Lara had a custom made dress by Roxy Goldstein who owns ‘Atelier Gold’ in Ship Street, Brighton. It was short with long sleeves, a scoop neck at the front and a deep V at the back. We had our dogs, Oscar and Spook, at the event and they were dressed up too in very smart red neckerchiefs. We then had a blessing in the south of France, and for that Lara wore a long dress by the designer Sophia Tolli from ‘Couture and Tiaras’ in Burgess Hill. She had it cleaned and wore it again for the big wedding party in September at our house. How many bridesmaids did you have? We had four bridesmaids; Helen Hodge, Georgie Maclean, Sharon Pavoni and Dem Saltmarsh, and three flowergirls, Lara’s lovely nieces… Laura and Becky Adams, and Edith Duncton. Was it difficult picking the bridesmaids? Not at all. Lara is very close to each of her bridesmaids and sees them all the time. They are very mischievous when they get together and I adore them all, so they were the perfect matches for my four good-men. Why did you decide you wanted to go bespoke? I needed an outfit that would cover all three events. I guess I have a strong fashion sense, coming from my upbringing with my mother as the Queen’s glove maker. Also, I don’t like wearing a tie and I tend to wear mostly black, or black with a white shirt. As the wedding was taking place in summer I thought that a black suit and white shirt would be elegant and with my four good men all being different sizes and shapes, I felt it important that they all wore the same suits and accessories. And of course they all had to wear red socks as I never wear any other colour. Even our amazing Reverend, Ish Smale wore red socks. Did Lara have any influence over what you wore? Yes, I wanted her approval and input. We had a consultation early on at Gresham Blake’s, because it was essential that I and my good men would be comfortable in the heat, but I wanted material that wouldn’t crease. We had a Mexican Day of the Dead theme to our wedding and we thought it would be fun for the linings to reflect that. You had not one, not two, not even three – but four ‘good men’?! I had a real problem with the notion of a Best Man, because it was impossible to choose between four mates whom I’m deeply fond of. The best man is supposed to get you to the wedding on time. Rob Kempson I’ve known the longest, since 1972, but he’s so immaculate and always takes so long to get ready, he’d still be at home waxing his chest hairs and deciding what cologne to spray on. Next I “The speeches were great. The only person who had a repeated ding at me, although very good-naturedly, was my new father-in-law Colin who liked to remind everyone that I wasn’t that much younger than him.” www.titlesussex.co.uk 59
  58. 58. HigHligHting a few of Peter’s acHievements in tHis Past year The 11th novel in the Roy Grace series, You Are Dead, was published in 2015 and went straight to Number One in both hardback and paperback. It spent six weeks at Number One and 19 weeks in the Top Ten The House On Cold Hill, Peter’s first full-length ghost story in over 20 years was published in 2015 and went straight into the top ten bestseller list The play of Peter’s novella The Perfect Murder is back on tour in 2016 starring Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace, www.theperfectmurder.co.uk 2015 Dead Good Readers Dr Lecter Award for Scariest Villain winner: You Are Dead 2015 Sainsburys eBook of the year winner: Want You Dead 2015 Voted by WH Smith readers The Best Crime Author of All Time 2016 Awarded the Crime Writers’ Association’s highest honour: the CWA Diamond Dagger. Falling in love and getting hitched Congratulations to a very well suited couple – Mr & Mrs James xxx considered Tony Mulliken, who I’ve known since 1981, but as he’s my publicist I feared we’d arrive to find the place decked out with advertising slogans: HAVE A DEAD GOOD WEDDING! Then there’s James Simpson who’s been a very close friend since 1994. But him get me to the wedding on time? A few years ago he got arrested in Los Angeles after driving off in someone else’s rental car outside a restaurant. Hardly a man to rely upon for transport. So then it was possibly David Gaylor who I’ve known since 1996. But the first time I went to his house, he directed me into the drive in a way that caused me to demolish his front wall. So I thought there was too much risk of an embarrassing arrival. Instead I decided that if I had all four, they might between them sort themselves out – and me! How did the speeches go? The speeches were great. The only person who had a repeated ding at me, although very good-naturedly, was my new father-in-law Colin who liked to remind everyone that I wasn’t that much younger than him. How many people at your wedding actually have made appearances in your book? Quite a number and there were quite a number of police officers past and present who have helped me in my research and become close friends. Did you have a wedding planner? Lara and good-man David Gaylor were the wedding planners, and they had weekly meetings and many many lists. How on earth did you organise three weddings? Lara and I were adamant that it would be enjoyable rather than stressful as so many people seem to get stressed over organising their weddings, and that takes the fun out of it. We had a brilliant time coming up with ideas, gathering decorations, planning layouts, tasting wine, choosing music, booking fireworks and stilt-walkers etc, and we met some great people along the way.The cake was made by a local lady called Yolande Robinson who owns a wonderful tea shop called ‘The Old Bake House’ in West Sussex. She made delicious cupcakes and a huge naked sponge cake decorated with berries and dripping jam. Lara’s good friend Alison Howe did the flowers. Ali has a florists called ‘Mad Lilies’ in Banstead, and she and her team came up with some really innovative ideas for our theme, and the flowers were stunning. Did you design your own invitations? How did you come up with the design? Partly they were designed by a lady called Lily Dunlop along with Lara. They worked up a brilliant Day of the Dead design which looked really striking. The invites for our big party were individually made by my PA’s daughter, Helene Carter. Each one was creatively torn and glued and decorated until her poor hands were sore! The design was taken from the Gresham Blake lining of my jacket so it all tied together really well. We loved them. where did you go on honeymoon? We stayed on in the South of France before driving over on the amazing coastal roads to Portofino in Italy. We stayed there for 10 days then drove up to the Italian lakes for a couple of days. Then headed back through Switzerland and France over a day or so. How would you define true love? Somebody once said ‘true love is not staring into each other’s eyes, it is looking in the same direction together’. I think there is a lot of truth in that. True love is about not just wanting to be with that other person but wanting to share all of lives experiences with them. what are you currently working on now? I have just submitted the latest draft of Roy Grace number 12,called ‘LoveYou Dead’. This will be out on May 19. I have the stage play of my novella, ‘The Perfect Murder’, back on tour after two hugely successful nationwide tours already. I’m just about to start writing Roy Grace 13, and I also have a non-fiction book out in July which will be announced shortly. when is ‘a Perfect murder’ on tour and what dates showing in sussex? Opening night is next week 2 February in Cheltenham. It’s in Brighton from Monday 7 March until Saturday 12 March but it’s getting booked up very quickly! www.titlesussex.co.uk60

  60. 60. Choosing the right wedding suit is vital for that all- important big day. Fal Blake gives us some top tips on choosing the right suit for the man You know how to WHISTLE,don’t you? The Morning Suit The morning suit dates back to the early 18th century when it quickly became very popular and was soon adopted as *THE*itemtowearatanyformaldaytime event. See also ‘White Tie and Tails’. The clue is in the name with this one. Both are great choices if you’re having a formal wedding day. Embrace the traditions; after all, it’s the one day where you really get to dress to impress. More and more we’re seeing clients going for the traditional morning suit/ tails, but opting to have them made in completely non-traditional cloth. But unless you regularly socialise in high society or attend sporting events such as Ascot, how many times will you realistically wear this again? The Tuxedo or Dinner Jacket Time to channel James Bond! The DJ or ‘tux’ became popular at the end of the First World War and was the favoured alternative to morning suits and tails, commonly worn at formal evening soirees. There are so many elements that you can mix up with the tuxedo; you have the freedom to make it your own. Single or double breasted? Contrasting lapels? I would recommend that this is crafted in a medium weight cloth, something like a Barathea or a wool and mohair mix. These have really nice textures and will take your tux to the next level. For those that really want the Bond look, go for the wool and mohair mix, as this it what his suit was made from. A Bespoke Suit This is your opportunity to get every little detail just the way you wantit, matchingyourpersonality and the theme of your wedding day to a T. The little details you can add to your wedding suit are endless; have full control over the type of lapel, the number of vents on the jacket, the width of the trousers... Flashes of colour on the cuffs and/or under the collar, embroidery (from a bumblebee to your initials), and bespoke accessories such as pocket squares, ties and cravats. 61. 61. The Personal Touch Some clients really make the suit their own by getting us to create bespoke prints. These can be used on both lining and suiting, from something really personal to you, such as family photos to something much more. One example that springs to mind is a suit we created for a client that had photographs of burgers printed onto the cloth. Anything is possible. As well as Gresham Blake there are some other great tailors in Sussex include Hugo Morris, and Dandylion Style. What you have to remember with bespoke suits is that you are making a long-term investment for an item that fits you perfectly. A Ready to Wear Suit Pretty much every good menswear store on the high-street will stock a multitude of ‘off the peg’ suits that will be suitable for a groom, the really good ones will also offer in-house adjustments. It’s the attention to these little nips and tucks that can make a ready to wear suit look the business, so look for the interesting details that set them apart. Off the Peg Obviously, we stock a wide range of off-the-peg suits in various cloths and colours. I also recommend Jump the Gun in Brighton and large department stores such as Debenhams, House of Fraser or John Lewis, which you can find across the whole of Sussex. If you need a suit quickly this is definitely the way to go. T I T L E W E D D I N G S #title2016 www.titlesussex.co.uk 63
