A presentation that I gave to office colleagues on 23 August 2013 highlighting awareness of how much open source they are probably already using, and then going on to show some more useful software to consider. The speaker notes expand further. The presentation was designed using LibreOffice and I used an Android tablet to remotely control the presentation.

- The focus here is more on the home than actual office use. The takeout is that awareness and familiarity is needed to realise that FOSS is now mature, innovative, and used everywhere. We need to play more with it not only to be useful at home, but also to advise clients more holistically. For government it is not about cost saving (that is 50% of the story) as the other half is local economic investment in FOSS services, freedom to change it, security, and stability. Not all FOSS is ideal for use, just the same as with proprietary software.

- The actual Google apps such as Gmail, Calendar, Play Store, etc are not open Source and are licensed by Google to OEMs to distribute, hence CyanogenMOD Custom ROM may not distribute G Apps With the actual ROM.
- Using Linux kernel and open source... have built their own custom app on top of that
- Darwin is an open source POSIX-compliant computer operating system released by Apple Inc. in 2000. It is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects. Darwin forms the core set of components upon which OS X and iOS are based.

- As of August 2013 Chrome has a 46% share of the browser market... Google Chrome is 100% Chromium with some proprietary spyware etc added on top to make Chrome.

- calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books. It has a cornucopia of features divided into the following main categories: - Library Management - E-book conversion - Syncing to e-book reader devices - Downloading news from the web and converting it into e-book form - Comprehensive e-book viewer - Content server for online access to your book collection
- Main features: - Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and Mounts it as a real disk. - Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive. - Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication). - Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent. - Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted. - Encryption can be hardware-accelerated on modern processors. - Provides plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password: Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system
- PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.
- Booting from a LiveCD ensures a completely clean Boot with no malware or spyware. Download ISO file, Then burn to CD / DVD, and boot it! - LibreOffice Presentations can be remotely controlled by Android phone or tablet. Displays slides before and after with notes, or slide thumbnails for quick navigation. Free to use and connects via WiFi and Bluetooth and reads presentation over the link (no manual import or sync needed – updates on the computer will appear when using the Android device).
- FOSS by its philosophy is open to broader crowdsourced input from across the world (many languages, cultures, etc). Its philosophy is one of sharing and interoperating... it wants to exchange data with other systems and seeks out open standards to do so. It outsurvives any individual project and can be forked into a new project eg. Like OpenOffice was forked into LibreOffice when the community was dissatisfied with how Oracle was managing OpenOffice. My personal Gadgeteer site link lists numerous best-of-breed open source software for use in the home as well as at the office.
