2. What is equipment.data?
An RCUK (EPSRC) funded project to establish a service providing a national
research equipment portal for HE
2
A project team based at the University of Southampton:
Adrian Cox – Project Manager
Louise Payne – Project marketing & communications officer
Andrew Milsted – Web developer
Who are we?
3. • Established network of interested parties in equipment sharing
related activity (SES (S5 then), N8, GW4, M5)
• Standardised database vocabulary – the “UNIQUIP data
publishing specification”
• Established common agreement to linked open data approach
• Early influencing of system design (e.g. Pure, Agresso, Kit
Catalogue and bespoke systems)
• Proved the concept for a national equipment portal
3
Where did it start?
4. What are our objectives:
• Deliver a sustainable solution enabling the searching of
research equipment and facilities across HE
• Provide support for institutions wishing to engage
• Contribute to wider related developments (e.g. Gateway
to Research and equipment sharing discussion)
• Vendor engagement – influencing system design and
interoperability
4
18. Objectives this year….
• Continued community engagement
Landscape study follow-up and increasing compliance
• Encouraging introduction into procedures and guidance
• Establishing the standards
Embedding open data best practice, linking wider datasets e.g.
publications for Gateway to Research
Achieving recognised standards e.g. W3C and CASRAI
• Vendor engagement – wider developments – Use in institutional
repositories
18
Scottish Universities workshop
Landscape study 126 institutions contacted.
Equipment data is related to its relevant facility entry through the use of unique references for facilities and equipment e.g. The equipment item entry E0001 will indicate it is related to facility F0041, therefore displaying on the page for facility F0041.
The same data feed driving Southampton’s database is also harvested by equipment.data’s auto-discovery.
