Leadership and the importance of the tone of our voice
“Leadership is it not something about me is something about us”
Based on the “TED Ideas worth spreading” we decipher some keys about what is and what someone need to
became a great leader. The mere fact of being honest, kind or genuinely someone who want your best is a good
candidate for lead. “Leadership is not about command and being authority, is about create relationships between
the one who lead and the ones who follow the leader”, Kouzes and Posner propose this on The Leadership
Challenge, and couldn’t be more right.
What Kouzes and Posner propose on The Leadership Challenge is the same that some many others experts on
this field point out, Trustworthy is a mandatory characteristic someone need to have to get on leading, but even
more important is to make yourself credible and your speech credible. How many times do we hear, for instance,
a politic said “I believe on this…I want to do this…” but in fact, the lack of emotion on their words makes us feel
some kind of rejection?.
The answer is too many times – always come to our mind why haven’t they practice it? Why
they don’t even believe their word? Should I suppose to believe them?
We can itemise the different element participate in the speech. Knowing that is important to control the stage, the
physical space we’ve got, we come across with the idea that on our way of saying it, need to be important as well.
Even more, as has said on the TED, there are elements on the speech that affect intrinsically on results. Those
are:
• 38% of someone evaluation is about the speech tone
• 7% of decisions are taken by the speakers words
• 55% non-verbal communication
Despite the fact we don’t used to work on this elements, I mean, both non-verbal communication and our speech
tone, are sparingly important on decisions-making, on seduce and influence others. So if someone has tomorrow
an interview, a conference, a meeting or why not? A teaching class may have more efficient results and be more
productive.
As we‘ve seen, 38% of someone’s evaluation are the speech tone which means that doesn’t matter how fantastic,
how prepare and documented is our speech, if don’t use the adequate tone.
So “tone of voice affects how people respond to you” and it some researches for influence others need to be:
• Upbeat
• Warm
• Under control
• Clear

An example exposed on the TED, was the case of Margaret Tatcher, who has been working with the National
Theatre in order to slow down her speech’s tone. Every time she got emotional, her voice got louder becoming a
bit shrill – her skills were not visible and her talk was less proactive and influential.
So we realized then, the tone we use is indispensable as well as other non-verbal communication we utilize
without realizing it.
