1. David Collings
BSc CEng FICE
David is a Designer, Writer,
Researcher and Teacher. A Chartered
Engineer with over 30 years
experience of global Civil Engineering.
3. Engineering Design Consultant
David has extensive experience of Civil Engineering projects across the
world. His experience covers a wide range of work including; bridges,
tunnels, buildings, towers, silos, reservoirs, water and sewage schemes
petrochemical works and power stations. His main interest is in the
design and construction of bridges. He has been responsible for many
steel-concrete composite bridges in the UK and joined Robert Benaim
Associates (RBA) to develop its steel bridges expertise. While working
with Robert he learned the art of prestressed concrete design, and was
responsible for the BCI Award winning UK-Bangladesh friendship
Bridge, a 1200m long multiple 110m span concrete cantilever bridge
over the Meghna river in Bangladesh (next slide). David was Technical
Director at RB International based in Kuala Lumpur where he lead the
technical team working on a number of major concrete bridge, viaduct
and tunnel projects including the 17km Second Penang Crossing.
Since 2011 David has worked as an independent consultant
advising
contractors
and
leading
consulting
practices.

UK – Bangladesh Friendship Bridge
5. Writing
David is a contributor to the successful Bridge Design Manual. He is the
author of a book on Steel-concrete composite bridges which was recently
updated for its second edition, and a book on design of composite buildings
using Eurocodes. He is currently writing a book on Concrete Bridges.
David has written and presented many technical papers, he was awarded the
Telford Prize for his paper on in-plane membrane (arching) actions in slabs.
He recently published work on extradosed bridges. David’s work on
environmental comparisons of bridges was widely quoted. He is a
reviewer for ICE Proceedings papers and a member of the
Proceedings Overseeing Panel for Bridge Engineering.
7. Research
David is active in many current research areas via Collings R&D and
University of Surrey. He was awarded the Telford prize for his paper on
in-plane membrane (arching) actions in slabs, the work is ongoing with
further tests and research currently being carried out in Malaysia and UK.
David’s work on environmental comparisons of bridges was widely
quoted; again research work in this area is currently ongoing.
David was a member of the committee updating the advice in TR47 to
accommodate external prestress and segmental construction techniques.
He is active in various industry groups and is a past chairman of the UK
Post Tensioning Association. He is a reviewer for ICE Proceedings
papers and a member of the Proceedings overseeing panel for
Bridge Engineering. David is past chairman of the IABSE group Malaysia.

9. Teaching
David has lectured on the University of Surrey’s MSc course in steel
concrete composite bridges, and a visiting lecturer at Imperial College,
London. David is a Supervising Civil Engineer for the ICE training
scheme, he has seen many successfully pass their Professional Review
and gain the prestigious MICE. During his time in SE Asia David learnt to
read, write and speak Chinese ( 汉 语 ), continuing to learn as well as
teach.
.
David also carries out bespoke lectures for company CPD requirements,
recent lectures include Extradosed Bridges, Diaphragm Design, Design
of steel-concrete composite bridges, etc. Extracts or summaries of some
