grazing was banned in the park, leading to violent clashes
between local farmers and the government.
5. GEOGRAPHY
• Wetland systems have an array of microhabitats
having trees, mounds, dykes and open water.
• Uplands have grasslands of tall species of grass
together with scattered trees and shrubs present in
varying density.
• Woodlands with thickets of huge Kadam trees.
The Wetland is a part of the Indo-Gangetic Great
Plains.
7. FAUNA
Macro invertebrates such as worms, insects and mollusks, are more
abundant in variety and numbers than any other group of organisms.
Mammals include Blue bull, porcupine, jackals and jungle cats. Also
home to the Indian mongoose.
8. BIRD SANCTUARY
• Waterfowls – The location of Keoladeo is perfectly set in the
Gangetic plain which gives herons, storks, and cormorants an
amazing advantage for breeding. The most regarded bird of the
sanctuary is the Siberian crane… unfortunately believed to not
be coming back due to nomadic hunting.
• Land birds are also rich here
9. CONSERVATION AND MANAGMENT
• Management is to allow the area to flood and dry out
annually, rather than be maintained as a system of
permanent marshes.
• Water for the wetlands is supplied from the dam outside
the park boundaries.
• Grazing and collection of firewood or grasses is now
banned as well
• Although without grazing management is difficult
because channels are blocked with a fast growing grass
