  2. 2. Is your hobby a problem? Let's find out Typically, a hobby is an activity or interest that is pursued outside of one's regular work and is mostly pursued for pleasure.

Stamp collecting, chat rooms, railroads, softball, scrapbooking, golf, reading, painting, tap dancing, yard work, crafts, auto mechanics, music, garage sales, sewing, fishing, cooking, boating, furniture refinishing, javelin tossing, and a variety of other activities or pastimes all necessitate a certain amount of balance.
  4. 4. We need to make sure we have a balanced approach to managing our family life and any extracurricular activities we might enjoy.

  8. 8. People are affected by depression in a variety of ways. Some folks snooze the entire day away. Others are only interested in reading, reading, reading.
  9. 9. Others will spend a lot of time down in the basement or out in the shed building a bigger, faster widget to avoid dealing with the source of their irritations.
  10. 10. Hobbies are supposed to be a healthy release for stress, not a technique to avoid dealing with problems that must be addressed.
  11. 11. Hobbies can end up being very expensive. Boating, Snowmobiles, Remote control drones, cars, boats, planes & helicopters, ATV’s, motorcycles, and ski equipment (water or snow) are all reasonable examples.
  12. 12. Some seemingly low-cost hobbies can also start to quickly add up and you’ll be attempting to budget for your monthly painting or pottery classes.
  13. 13. It's time to 'hit the pause button' and reassess your passion if it's causing more harm than good, if it's eating more of your family's finances and time than you can or should.
  14. 14. You will probably end up with two options: (1) Give up or vastly modify what you've been doing for the benefit of your family, or (2) Divert your attention to a hobby that you can devote less time to but also make money from.
  15. 15. You might be pleasantly surprised to learn that almost any hobby or interest can be transformed into at least a somewhat profitable business with cheap overhead and low start-up costs.
  16. 16. You're also not compelled to offer a particular product! In fact, you can simply sell your knowledge as a service.
  17. 17. If you've been doing your activity/hobby on a regular basis for a long time, you're probably fairly knowledgeable about it.
  18. 18. If you’ve been making wooden toys for your kids and friends' kids, for example, you're no doubt familiar with where to get the best deals on tools & supplies.
