The title
HE Education & Learning, Researching,
Creative Practitioner
encapsulates the 3 elements of the contemporary
creative practitioner, practicing now within an
HE education & learning environment
The inclusion of education & learning is obvious….
The research element in this era,
is now also essential to include….
Thus….

There are as many models of reflection and/or reflective practice as there are different
applications
Ghaye and Lillyman (1997:20) outline five (5) categories of models of reflection:
• Structured
• Hierarchical
• Iterative
• Synthetic
• Holistic
Whilst I am not going to do is to explain what each of these categories are at this
point in time. What I am going to do is: use this to segway into an example of one of
the most known authors of a reflection model – a reflection cycle

The 1st category I would like to introduce is:
• Structured
Perhaps one of the most known authors of a reflection model is Gibbs.
Gibbs’ 1988 Reflective Cycle is an example of structured model.
He asks questions – six (6) specifically.

Reflective Cycle

12. 12
The 1st question asks:
What happened?
The 2nd question asks:
What were you thinking and feeling?
The 3rd question asks:
What was good and bad about the
experience?
The 4th question asks:
What sense can you make of the
situation?
The 5th question asks:
What else could you have done?
The 6th question asks:
If it arose again, what would you do?

There are a number of other categories of models of reflection, and within each category,
many many models of reflection. Some of the qualitative methods I have chosen to draw
on for my research study are:
14. 14
One of the qualitative methods I
have used to draw on for
guidance in the development of
my own reflective practice is
Brad Haseman’s model.
He developed the innovative QUT
Doctorate of Creative Industries
back in the early 2000s, and
integrated Reflective Practice as
a core ingredient. The irony is, I
did not understand this course
when I first commenced, but its
message is clearly resounding to
me some two years on.

One of the most renowned writers in
the discipline of Reflective Practice is Donald
Schon.
He coined the term reflection-in-action. Action
as in practice. Therefore, reflecting in the
midst of practice. What I refer to as ‘in-the-
moment’.
He followed up with term reflection-on-action.
Therefore, reflecting after the point of practice.
I refer to this as ‘immediately after the moment
of practice’.
And finally, Pascal and Thompson contributed
almost twenty (20) years later with reflection-
for-action – where by it is assumed the
reflection is at some time after action; in the
past enough, for it to be consider planning for
the next practice session.

Brookfield has most notably
written about Reflective
Practice from within the
industry of education and
learning.
Brookfield’s model is based
on four (4) lenses –
1) our own eyes as a
educator
2) our learner’s eyes and the
feedback we receive from
them
3) Our peer’s/colleague’s
eyes in terms of what
they believe has
occurred, and why it may
have occurred;
4) the field's literature
