2. There is a Sucker Born Every
Minute
A quote attributed to PT Barnum , but actually said by a competitor David
Hannum.
The Nigerian scammers have been around for several years. We have
heard about them on such shows as Dateline and 60 Minutes, but never
about the puppy scams.
Scams are played on both the buyer and the breeder.
With breeders they pretend to be buyers. They send their agent to pick up
the puppy. They send a certified check to the breeder for more than the
price of the puppy and asks you to give the overpayment to the agent. They
end up with a puppy and what ever that over payment is. You end up with a
bad check and YOU must make it good if you spend any of it
With buyers you send them money for a puppy and you never see it.
3. You Know it may be an Nigerian
If the ad only lets you respond with e mail
The puppies are real cheap $300 to $600
Price usually includes shipping.
Some say they only want $350 for shipping the puppy is free
Quite often they have many breeds for sale
Their ads and email are very illiterate,
Often use religion and call themselves Pastors.
Always want payment sent via Western Union
Put ads on sites like E Bay Classifieds, Puppy Find, Craig’s List and
other real cheap or free ads.
You send them money and they come up with excuses for you to
send more i.e.: need heath cert, forgot about the shot , export fee.
4. Don’t be a Victim
Only deal with a person you can talk to on the phone.
Do not send money by Western Union. If you cannot see the puppy pay only
by credit card.
Be wary of cheap puppies. Below are dogs listed on Puppy Find. They all
were priced at $350 shipping included. Both Puppy Find and E Bay
classified will check out and quickly remove the ads but they depend on
people to report them
Sites like Puppy Find, Next Day pets let you see other ads they are posting.
In the case below there were 18 people each with 50 breeds all 12 weeks
old and they joined PF in November all at the same time. Puppy Find took
the ads down within 48 hours. They usually post real cute pictures.
There are non scammers with many breeds also. They are usually USDA
licensed kennels. If you want to be on the safe side stick with breeders
breeding only 2 or max 3 breeds of dogs. Watch out for puppies under 4
months of age being sold a a very low price (under 800)
There are many good breeders on the net. Just be careful .
