How many of you have ever met or connected with someone online? DID YOU KNOW FUN FACTS? 1 out of 8 couples married in the U.S. last year met online (EX: 1/3 Children—Kris & Mandi) You Tube accounts for 60 % of all videos watched online (Online Video Stats, 01, 08) 13% of Internet users listen to podcasts (Pew, MAR 07) 28% of users tag online content of photos, stories, blogs (Pew, JAN 07) (Diggs) 65% of online American youth use social networking sites (Pew, MAY 09) 60% use instant messaging/txt messaging 84% of online American youth have posted messages to a friend’s Facebook Wall (PEW MAY 09) 35% Adults (18-34 vast majority) have social network profile (PEW 09) The IMPORTANT POINT is that these figures are huge and growing daily.   4. The Pentagon Channel – 24/7 DoD news and information delivered to 360 U.S. bases and military audiences in 177 countries. Daily newscasts, internal information programs, live coverage of Pentagon press briefings and Capitol Hill testimony by DoD officials Companion website with streaming and on-demand video, and associated social media DoD podcasts, other emerging media products; one million downloads each month Reaches more than 18 million domestic households   American Forces Radio and Television Service – distributes 8 original TV channels and 12 radio services of the top-rated U.S. news, sports, and entertainment programming, and inserts targeted information products for military audiences in 177 countries/territories. Military news programming is produced by affiliates in each major region, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and feeds The Pentagon Channel daily. Total audience is nearly one million.   American Forces Press Service – Produces OSD-level news coverage and interviews with DoD leaders for posting on the Defense.gov website and publishing by military publications. Distributes information via Twitter, Facebook, blogs, podcasts, and delicious.com   Public Web – maintains Defense.gov, the prime web portal of DoD, is the Department’s subject matter expert on Internet presence, and maintains public websites for OSD, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force; total of more than 500 sites.   Stars and Stripes – First Amendment daily newspaper delivered to or purchased by U.S. Forces overseas. Deployed troops get it delivered to them for free wherever they are. Also provides Internet versions of the paper. Daily printed copies number more than 90,000, and total readership of papers and web content are estimated at 350,000 each day. Defense Visual Information – manages and archives DoD’s still imagery used for operational planning and analysis, public affairs, and other applications. Distributes imagery on defenseimagery.mil website, hosting more than 800,000 images and Flickr.

New Media – supports DoD communication efforts through emerging media techniques Blogs- assists units in creating their own, or providing input to an existing blog Bloggers’ round table- arranges conferences with leading bloggers and posts podcasts and transcripts of the conference. Topics typically include military medicine, research, operations, and personnel issues. Blogtalkradio - assists units in creating their own “channel” on Blogtalk radio, or posting their information on an existing channel Podcasts - helps podcasts get distributed through multiple web sites Social Media­- distributes information via FaceBook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, etc. DoD video clips- helps units post videos on DoDvClips.mil RSS feeds- Really Simple Syndication feeds directly from DoD.gov web site
