Etymologically, the word
“Philosophy” comes from the
Greek words, Philo, meaning
“to Love” and Sophia, meaning
“wisdom”. Philosophy means
“love of wisdom”.

nature of knowledge, reality,
and existence, especially when
considered as an academic
discipline.

Holistic
• Looks at all aspect of the
given problem or
situation. All aspects are
given importance when
making conclusion
Partial
•Looks at only a
limited number of
aspects of the given
problem or situation

A mother listen to both stories of
her two arguing child before
making any conclusion about the
issue.
Partial
• Example:
A mother scolds older child after
the younger child accused her
sister of stealing her diary.
However, the mother only
listened to the younger child, and
not to the older child, before
deciding to scold the student.

Doctors review a
patient’s illness as an
aspect of his or her
lifestyle and personal
circumstances.
Partial
• Example:
Doctors often focus on a
specific set of symptoms
to determine the cause
of patient’s illness.

analytical thinking, as an individual
focuses on certain areas or aspects of
