Campus DJ state finals win for Murdoch
The Murdoch University Tavern recently hosted the state final of the National Campus
DJ competition . The Australian Association of Campus Activities (AACA) hosts the
annual competition. The event aims to give student DJ’s the opportunity to mix it with
the industry’s best, giving them valuable experience and feedback from seasoned DJ’s.
This year's campus champions from Murdoch (Matthew Cheeseman), Curtin (Jack
Martin) and UWA (Patrick Drew) competed to represent W.A. in front of a panel of
expert judges. The judges rated competitors on originality, stage presence, audience
response, transition and level control as well as technical ability. Matthew Cheeseman
was declared the state winner.
Matt, who is currently completing an IT degree at Murdoch, was offered a trip to
Melbourne to compete for the national title. The national event will be held late June
at the Eagle Bar, La Trobe University. Murdoch University Guild General Manager, Will
Perera said if Cheeseman was crowned Best Campus DJ in Australia, he could win a
$5000 prize plus the opportunity to DJ at a range of Red Bull events across W.A..
Best of luck for the nationals Matt. You may be needing two very different resumes in
the near future!

My Career Journey - Dhivahar (Dhiv) Sri Ranjan
(BSc. Hons. MBA CIV TAE)
I graduated from Murdoch University with a degree in Biomedical Science with Honours.
To improve my employment prospects, I then went on to complete a Masters in
Business Administration (MBA) at Murdoch in 2010.
Following graduation I initially secured work as a Research Officer, but wasn’t sure of
the next step. I explored various possible avenues, seeking both job satisfaction and a
career for years to come. As I was reflecting upon my future profession, I knew I
wanted to do something that would allow me to give back to the community.
Furthermore, I wanted to combine my Science and MBA qualifications in an
entrepreneurial venture. I realised tutoring was one area that I was very passionate
about, having assisted first and second year university students in my final year. One of
my friends suggested becoming a Secondary Teacher, as they were in high demand. In
2. considering this, I eventually came up with the idea of forming a tuition business for
secondary students. Such an enterprise was congruent with my two main goals,
namely; to give back to community and to use my combined skill set.
The idea of forming a tuition business lead to Dhivz Tutoring Services, which specialises
in teaching secondary students Mathematics, Sciences, Accounting, Finance and
Management (aligned with my professional qualifications). Furthermore, I also help
students with motivation and time management skills, assisting them to achieve their
goals. It is something that I enjoy and hope to develop further.
You have worked hard to find and follow your passion Dhiv. All the best with the
business venture.

CONFERENCE REVEALS WHAT EMPLOYERS WANT
Employers who presented at a recent IREG (International Ranking Expert Group) conference in London generally felt
that soft skills are harder to gain and teach than technical skills and knowledge. Therefore in their hiring process, they
tended to focus on identifying more general soft skills in graduates.
Some of the soft skills and traits employers were looking for included:
- An ability to work collaboratively with teams of people from a range of backgrounds and countries;
- Communication skills – speaking, listening, and writing;
- A high degree of drive, resilience, and enthusiasm;
- Leadership skills;
- The ability to influence others and resolve conflicts;
- A capacity to develop new skills and behaviours according to role requirements;
- Flexibility to change in line with a rapidly developing market and global economy;
- An ability to absorb complex information quickly;
- A high degree of self-awareness and self-management;
- An openness to and respect for a range of perspectives from around the world;
- Multicultural learning agility (e.g. able to adapt and learn in any culture or environment);
- Interdisciplinary knowledge such as broad technical skills, language skills, etc..
3. Beth Jenkins, Recruitment Marketing Advisor at Shell International had the following to say at the conference:
"Unlike most job seekers, new graduates don’t put measurable indicators (regarding the above) into their CVs, yet
quantifying their achievements and providing evidence of results would significantly strengthen their applications."
