2. INTRODUCTION
Artificial satellites are man made objects set into space. Scientist use them
to study the universe, forecast weather, and so on.
Space contains our own planet, Earth, and our own star, the Sun. Both
belong to our galaxy called milky way, which contains about 100 billion stars.
In this presentation, you can find out some information of space. So lets
begin!!!
3. SPUTNIK - I
The first artificial satellite to go around
the earth was the Russian satellite Sputnik
– 1 it was launched in 4 October 1957. The
Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical
low Earth orbit.
Orbiting for three weeks before its
batteries died, then silently for two more
months before falling back into the
atmosphere. Its orbiting height is 577km.
It had completed 1440 orbits till date.
Its manufacturer was Energia. Several
replicas of the sputnik 1 satellite can be
found in Russia and another is on display
in the Smithsonian National Air and Space
Museum in Washington, D.C. It remained
in the space for 96 days.
4. EUGENE CERNAN
The second last person to walk on
moon was an American astronaut
named Eugene Cernan way back in
December 1972. A navy test pilot
and electrical and astronautic
engineer, he was also the
commander of Apollo 17.
He was born on 14 march 1934,
Chicago, Illinois United States. He
died on 16 January 2017, Houston
Texas, United States. He had done
Apollo 17 Apollo 10 and Gemini 9A
missions on space. He was eleventh
person to walk on moon.
5. YURI GAGRIN
On12 April 1961 Yuri Alekseyevich
Gagarin became the first human
being to journey in outer space,
achieving a major milestone in
Space Race, his capsule was Vostok
– I completing one orbit of Earth.
He was born on 9 March 1934,
Klushino, Russia. He died on 27
March 1968, Novoselovo, Russia.
His nationality is Soviet. His height
is 1.57m.
FACT : Americans say astronaut
while Russia say cosmonaut.
6. VALENTINA TERESHKOVA
Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova is
a member of the Russian state duma
, engineer, and former cosmonaut.
She is the first and youngest woman
to have flown in space with solo
mission on Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963.
She orbited the Earth 48 times, spent
almost three days in space and
remains the only woman to have
been on a solo space mission.
FACT : Before her selection for the
soviet space program Tereshkova was
a textile factory worker and amateur
skydiver.
7. NEIL ARMSTRONG
On 20th July, 1969 Neil Armstrong, an
American astronaut became the first
person to step on moon.
He travelled in spacecraft Apollo
11, along with astronaut Michael
Collins Edwin Eugene (buzz)Aldrin ,jr.
Armstrong describe the first step on
the moon as “one giant leap for
mankind.”
He was born 5 August 1930,
Wapakoneta, Ohio, United States. He
died on 25 August 2012, Cincinnati,
Ohio, United States. His space
mission were Apollo 11 and Gemini 8.
8. RAKESH SHARMA
Rakesh Sharma an Indian military
pilot and cosmonaut, was the first
Indian citizen in space. Taking part
in joint Indo-Soviet space mission,
Sharma and two soviet cosmonauts
flew to the Salyut 7 space station
on 3rd April 1984. Their space craft
landed back on Earth on 11 April
1984.
He was born on 13th January
1949,Patiala, India. His space
missions were Soyuz T-11, Soyuz-
10.His spouse name is Madhu
Sharma
9. International Space Station (ISS)
The International Space Station is a
Space Station in low earth orbit. The
ISS programme is a joint project
between five participating space
agencies: NASA, Roscomos,
JAXA,ESA, and CSA. The ownership
and the use of space station is
established by inter-governmental
treaties and agreements.
Did you know there is a space
research station assembled and
launched in the space itself ? In
1990s, the ISS was launched in
collaboration by 16 countries. This is
a unique space research centre in the
Earth’s orbit where scientist stay and
research about space.
10. Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)
India begin it’s first-ever
interplanetary mission by launching
Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or the
Mangalayan spacecraft on 5th
November, 2013. The MOM went into
Mars’ orbit successfully on 24th
September, 2014.
The Mars Orbiter Mission is also
called Mangalayan (From Sanskrit
Word “Managal” which means Mars
and “Yan” which means vehicle).
It made India the first Asian nation to
reach Martian orbit and the first
nation in the world to do so on its
maiden attempt.
11. BONUS FACTS
Every star would explode if gravity did not hold its material together.
The African Dogon tribe say their ancestors knew about the invisible star
Sirius B thousands of years before scientists discovered it in 1862.
In the constellation corona borealis there is when tiny black particles hide it
from the view.
North American Indians tested warrior’s eyesight by seeing how many stars
they can count.
Giant elliptical (oval) galaxies, found at the centre of large clusters, maybe
eating up smaller galaxies.
It would take 81 moons to weigh the same as Earth.
