My personal purpose for going to
college is to further my education so
that I can get a career in the heath care
field. I care about the availability of
quality heath care for everyone whether
it be in poorer areas of the United
States, or in third world nations that do
not have access to the types of resources
that we do in this country. I will impact
this issue by potentially pursuing public
health so that I can be part of the policy
making that impacts the level of heath
care resources available throughout the
world.
-Karenna Roest

small and changing my peers' and
community's attitude towards racial
injustice.

1) My personal purpose for going to
college is to better myself and to better
equip myself to make a positive impact
in my community and out world.
2) My civic purpose for going to college
is to become a more productive member
of society.
3) I care about the trajectory of society
and challenging the inequities currently
in place. We live in a country and a
world where our differences determine
our lives and the resulting divisions
serve nothing but hurting our
communities and our neighbors. I care
about changing that reality.
-Maren Roeske
I'd like to stress a certain "3 E's":
education, economy, and empathy. In
order to establish a progressive society,
these "3 E's" must be implemented by
our generation. A strong higher
education can and will maximize our
potential as well as our consequent
impact on society. Personally, I'm
working towards an education in
medicine, since it is one of the few fields
today that promotes growth in all of the
"3 E's".
-Jein Eleanor Seo
Tyler Smith
My public, civic purpose for going to
college is to educate myself and move
forward in making a difference in the
aspects of society that need to change.
My personal, individual purpose for
going to college is to better myself and
eventually make a living. I care about
my community and making it a better

integrating immigrants into society, and
training our teachers against
discriminating against students based
on ethnicity, race, and/or gender.
-Afnan Tolba

community using the knowledge
gained by my degree.
3. I care about improving my quality of
life.
4. I will impact the people around me
by striving to be the best version of
myself and to put myself in the right
spot to help them and support them.
-Hassan Hammoud
My personal purpose for college is to follow
the path of furthering my education, not only
for myself, but for my family, making them
proud and just being successful showing that
as a Black Female individual I too can make
it and I am smart and intelligent. Also, I will
impact society by fighting for what is right.
Teaching about my cultural background and
good things about my race.
Onward, it is not just my skin color that
makes me who I am… it is me as a person.
Race does not patter to me and stereotypes
shouldn’t and isn’t a thing in my eyes.
Being able to be sensitive to what others go
through with racial profiling, gender issues,
lacking coalition (getting together as one),
classes in society, and so much more is what
matters. #SYD2017
-Mackenzie Martin-Turner
My individual, personal purpose for
going to college is to expand my
knowledge and see life through a new
lens.
My public, civil purpose for going to
college is to use my newly gained
knowledge to share new ideas, listen to
new ideas, and help those around me.
I care about self expression through art
and music, helping those who aren't
heard, the civil and social rights of all
humans, and making myself and those
around me happy.
I will impact those who are near and far
from me by always trying my very best
to improve mine, and their lives.
-Marina Ackerman
1)Considerations I have about my family, neighborhood,
community or society is first most accepting who I am as
a person and also acceptance of my dream. I want them
to believe in me and listen to my voice. I'm concerned
about facing them with disappointment.
2)I hope I can achieve my goals of uniting my
community and the surrounding communities. I want
different people from all races and ethics to come in one
table and enjoy others difference. I also want to change
the negative views that my people have and make them
more open to others because we're all humans in the end.
3)Ways going to college can help me bring back to my
community and my family is that it will teach me to have
a round eye to the others in the world. The higher the
education the better because I can teach my people what
I learn.
-Fadel Muthana
I want to go to college so I can gain
more knowledge on the world we live
in and experience things outside of my
comfort zone. I feel that in order to
make change in my community I will
need to be more credible and
knowledgable, which is another reason
I feel that college is needed. I will
impact my community by constantly
being involved in social justice and
providing resources and a platform for
those who need it.
-Juliet Kosmyna-Blake
My individual, personal purpose for going to college is to have a good
future and make my parents proud. My public, civic purpose for going to
college is to show everyone that everything is possible. I care about making

model for them to know that with support you can accomplish anything.
#SYD2017

education and having an opportunity to
pursue my passions in ecology, physics,
or whatever my interests may develop
to be.
2) My public, civic purpose for going to
college is environmental justice.
3) I care about the environment and the
socioeconomic inequities that result
from environmental degradation. I want
to play a part in creating a sustainable
future for humanity.
4) I will impact the course of climate
change and environmental racism by
pursuing a career in scientific research
and seeking solutions to environmental
problems.
-Zijin Huang
Hannah Ho

acceptance in my community and what
it means to truly stand for the concept
of social justice.
-Nesreen Shukr
1) My individual and personal purpose for going to college is wanting to get a good education and make my present
and future family, my religious and racial community, as well as myself proud.
2) My public and civic purpose for going to college is to set a good example of how an Arab who is Druze and not
Muslim is and break the racial and religious disrespect and intolerance there is in my community and hopefully
educate people and have them follow in my footsteps
3) I care about people treating others how they would like to be treated and respecting their racial and religious
identities and realizing that the color of skin, shape of eyes, or beliefs of others does not make them any less of a
person than everyone else, just different.
4) I will impact racial and religious injustice by educating as many people as I can and getting educated myself on
social justice issues as well as in a way to become a highly respected doctor and do great important things and be
someone people like to listen to so I can set an example of how to treat others and have people hopefully follow my
lead.
-Hamsa Ezzi
My individual, personal purpose for
going to college is to create change. By
attending college, I can discover how I
wanna leave my mark on the world. I
can become involved in something I'm
truly passionate about and find where
I'm supposed to belong.
-Alex Schafer
My individual, personal purpose for going to college is so that I can better
myself and make my parents proud. My public, civic purpose for going to
college is so I can prove that anything is possible as long as you put your mind
to it. I care about social justice and changing the world for the better. I will
impact by being a role model and implementing everything SYD has taught me
to my everyday life. #SYD2017
