Four Tips for Effective Sales
Leadership
Diane Kaern
Introduction
 Former Hewlett-Packard Company sales compensation
analytics and reporting manager Diane Kaern possesses more
than two decades of experience in business administration
including sales operations and financial management. Over
the course of her career, Diane Kaern held leadership
positions at various companies and divisions in California and
Florida. The following includes include tips for becoming an
effective sales leader.
1. Report progress in addition to results. Remember to
highlight progress as well as results, which includes the
progress not only of individuals on the team, but also toward
overall goals and sales missions. Balance results metrics with
those that indicate progress to create a log of backward- and
forward-looking indicators.
2. Practice effective communication skills. Effective
communication is vital to any team, and skilled leaders will
make fostering communication a priority.
Sales Leadership
 Establish a policy of open communication and maintain a
working environment that encourages understanding and
honesty.
3. Develop talent and coach the team. Commit to
developing the talent of your team, and make sure
members of the team know they can come to you for
guidance and advice. Provide demonstrations of ways
they can improve and offer access to training and
professional development opportunities.
4. Look inwards. Remain conscious of your own attitude
and make personal development a priority. Make sure
you maintain a proactive approach and foster a positive
work environment.
