Rule #1 
Use rules!
Games have rules, so your gamified 
product has to have them too.
Here’s Tinder’s main rule 
as they describe it in the app store:
“Swipe right to like or left to pass. 
If someone likes you back, it’s a match!”
What rules would you use 
in your gamified product?
Well that depends very much 
on rule #2
Rule #2 
Encourage specific behaviours
A general “increase engagement” 
behaviour would be difficult to tackle.
Break it down into specific behaviours 
by asking the right questions.
Question 
How would we encourage users to 
comment on posts?
Answer 
To encourage users to comment on 
posts, we randomly generate them a 
cute icon each time they comment.
Using a “variable outcome” to encourage 
behaviour is a slick solution by secret.
Although it won’t necessarily do good to 
your product.
There are many solutions. But when in doubt, 
people tend to refer to the “usual suspects”...
As described in rule #3.
Rule #3 
There’s no point in points
Points, (badges and leaderboards), 
are often the easy way out when trying to encourage a 
behaviour.
That’s because it is tremendously easy to 
apply them to any product.
But if your users won’t value them, 
it’s pretty much pointless.
Understand what your 
users value
Or else you’d be giving the same 
prescription to every patient.
People value points when they really 
worked hard to get them.
Example: 
Logging in to your product every day 
(Shouldn’t be) hard work.
So don’t reward them with points for that.
Rule #4 
Know your rewards
Try to understand what your users 
consider as a reward.
The usual suspects here are always 
tangible rewards.
Example 
“These points earn you discounts”
This tactic can work. 
(Although behavioral economist Dan Ariely might beg to differ)
Anyway, tangible is not the only way of rewarding.
There are 3 families of reward that might 
work better for your product:
Reward of the Self 
Progressing, getting better at something, learning.
Reward of the Tribe 
To be accepted, loved and liked by our communities.
Reward of the Hunt 
Discovering, searching for patterns and acquiring.
“Find those rewards within thy products, 
and thou shalt reach the ultimate engagement.”
Rule #5 
Don’t forget the fun
As strange as it sounds, this key factor is 
sometimes neglected.
Maybe because it is a very elusive x-factor. 
What is fun?
There are books about it
But in order to understand, you really 
have to play games
And ask yourself why you are having fun 
while playing.
Disclaimer 
For this tactic to work, you should have 
fun while playing a game.
I mean, literally enjoying yourself. 
This is not that trivial as it might sound.
If you don’t find games fun, 
It will be hard for you to gamify your product 
successfully.
