The word democracy is derived from the
two Greek words namely ‘demos’ and ‘
cratia’.
‘demos’ means people and ‘cratia’ means
rule.
Abraham Lincoln said,
“Democracy is the government by
the people, for the people and of the

8. Characteristics of Democracy-
1. Democracy is a way of life. It is an
approach to various problems.
2. Democracy is a form of government is
based on the consent of the people.
3. Equality, liberty, justice and
decentralization are the watch words of
