Hematopoietic stem cells are incompletely
developed cells that can differentiate into any type
of blood cell, including platelets and white blood
cells. Found in marrow as well as in the blood
itself, they serve to renew the blood on a daily
basis.

 Over the past half-century, scientists have used this natural
function of the hematopoietic stem cell to increase blood cell
production and strengthen immune functions in patients with
certain cancers.
Medical professionals source hematopoietic stem cells from
the patient's own body or that of a donor. Physicians typically
search for a donor that is a complete human leukocyte
antigen (HLA) match, whether that individual be related or
unrelated to the patient. Partial matches may be appropriate
in some cases, and there has been much interest in the use
of half matches for haploidentical transplantation of T-cell-
depleted cells. Patients may also elect to receive cord blood
transplantation from a cord blood bank or an autologous
transplant from the patient's own body.
