Developer of the Minute
Made by hand for USFWC by FreeScholar 12/02/15
Visualizing and celebrating diversity while growing a community organically
How does a community recognize cooperative individuals and
how do they connect on issues and topics?
What do coop members actually do? Why should I get to know them?
We are Developers – Community Developers.
We are ALL Community Developers.
Without the whole community, a business is just a business. It will miss opportunities.
We are also, Community Organizers... and we need to know
about each other to combine our efforts to reach our potential.
One must relate to SOMEONE in a Community in order to
IDENTIFY and feel CONNECTED, and stay INVOLVED.
Seeking someone like you, doing something like you do, or
building something like you are building, is a natural thing.
The Fears
Where do I fit into the picture? I do not see anyone like me in there?
What do these people do and what do I have in common with any of them?
Do you see yourself here?
Do you see yourself here?
Do you see yourself here?
Or, do you see yourself over here?
Hmmm....
A Question
What would you do if you saw a picture of your
friend or colleague on a website you visit?
Not on Facebook or Twitter, but featured on a
website, a site you go to for information?
Imagine
Community Developer
Of the Minute
Engagement
The Question, once again:
What would you do if you saw a picture of a friend or
colleague on a tech website that you visit?
✔ The Plan:
Invite people to put their face on your website in a way that
allows people to see what they have in common, in 60 seconds.
You are seeking information, you connect with topics and ideas, then you end up in a tree with other people...
Click?
Webmention is a simple way to notify any URL when you link to it on
your site. From the receiver's perspective, it is a way to request
notifications when other sites link to it.
Webmention is a modern update to Pingback, using only HTTP and
x-www-urlencoded content rather than XMLRPC requests.
Webmention supersedes Pingback.
Webmention uses IndieWebCamp
http://webmention.org
http://indiewebcamp.com/webmention
https://www.drupal.org/node/1987964
Oooh, Webmention...
Indy WebCamp...
There is almost a module for that!
There is a way to connect our ideas...
Now, about that tree...
Chathouse.com 1997
archive.org screenshot
A campaign for members to send us their photo, was posted in a newsletter... The photo
was then posted in a prominent place on the front page, allowing people to to click on the
image to see a short biography of the person.
A member based topical chat site
Outcomes...
What else came from this idea and social model?
– A large spike in traffic and more postings were read
– Member generated message boards and forums based
on chathouse.com themes http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_New_Asylum/index.php?showtopic=10
– More links back to the site
– Within 2 months, 9,000 registrants per day
– The start of a paid membership base
– An app to build teams
What Next?
Something else started growing... it was a tree.
The Family Tree
What is the Family Tree?
– A visual way for people to show they have...
● Skills
● Connections
● Mentors
● Progress
● Projects
● Identity
A networked community where people are contributing to a
larger community effort, encourages people to share ideas and
knowledge freely. Connections grow when people see people
doing things and there is a place for them to join in the doing.
Family Tree Page 1997
Each image below was linked to a short biography of the community member.
Creating a venue and allowing people to meet on their own terms is better than
introducing them. Discovery is a big part of welcoming diversity at our own pace.
Outcomes...
What else came from this idea and social model?
– A physical community with longterm connections
– People building a network
– Many members hosting events around the globe
– A magazine with over 20 writers
– People contributing posts to the site
– Wait, did you say a magazine?

Imagine
Community Developer
Of the Minute
The 'Developer of the Minute' image links to a 30 – 60 second video.
The subject answers 2 questions.
1. How has a coop changed your life?
2. How has a coop enabled you to change the lives of others?
Community Developer
Of the Minute
On other sites, where mostly technical people gather, the 'Developer of the Minute' image is
displayed and is linked to the same 30 – 60 second video
The campaign will evolve to include videos from technical people describing their passions
so that Community Developers may get a view into what the possibilities are.
Two KEY QUESTIONS asked of community members -
archive.org screenshot
1. How has a cooperative changed your life?
2. How have cooperatives enabled you to change
the lives of others?
The Campaign – Basics:
A. Coop members will first meet each other and learn about their
similar interests, passions and projects.
B. Non-coop members will be introduced to community developers
that have the skills, the passion and desire to build things.
We already have diversity, let's show it!
Members will send in their own videos and add value to the campaign as it grows.
This campaign will easily show
the diversity of community
members around the world,
and the people that are deeply
involved in making it all
happen.
See yourself everywhere you want to be.
Community Developers
A Conclusion
Working together, local community strategists
and free software developers can build things
that are bigger than themselves. Ideas become
realities that improve lives.
Coop developers and free software developers,
working together, can build new platforms and
tools for enriching the lives of all.
...But first they must be introduced to each other
and realize their common goals.
Intending to cross-pollinate the coop solidarity movement with other
communities, we are seeking to highlight diversity by implementing this
campaign on several sites that already have robust communities seeking to
network and make long lasting connections.
It would be awesome if USFWC would be a to host for this campaign.
