Saturday, April 26, 2014
The overall goal of this activity is to review the latest advancements in the management of lipids in clinical practice, including the new American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology guidelines on lipids announced in November 2013. Topics include learning about evaluation and treatment options in lipids and lipoprotein disorders, as well as focusing on new prevention guidelines, physical activity, nutrition, drug therapies, advanced lipoprotein testing, special patient populations, and new technologies for lifestyle management.
Similarly, health coaching is also distinctly different from therapy. As someone with a therapy background, I have experience working with patients to understand why they feel the way they do – what are the messages running through their head that are preventing them from achieving their goals? What happened to them in the past? Coaching is not about looking back. It’s about looking forward and helping the patient identify what they need to get to where they want to be in the future. While a therapist will look for insights to share with you to help explain why you feel a certain way, health coaching will help you identify the steps you need to take to feel differently. We can consider the same patient example here. A therapist would talk with the patient about why they smoke – do past behaviors trigger smoking as stress relief, did they grow up in a home where others smoked and that was the norm? Coaching helps the patient visualize what they want to achieve and how to get there, for instance how to recognize and respond to triggers for smoking or proper utilization of smoking cessation tools.Though with all of that said, there is still an important role for therapy. Not all health problems can be solved with health coaching, and one of the most important things for a coach to know is when to involve a therapist.
