2. Long-term conditions
• A condition that cannot be cured but can be
managed through medication and/or therapy
• Long-term conditions are also called chronic
conditions
• Approximately 15 million people in England with
at least one long-term condition (DH)
• Includes arthritis, diabetes, asthma and coronary
heart disease
• Many long-term conditions such as epilepsy are
also neurological
4. Nervous system
• Central nervous system (CNS) is the brain
and spinal cord
• Peripheral nervous system (PNS) is outside
the brain and spinal cord
• PNS sub-divides into somatic nervous system
(SoNS): voluntary control/movement eg lifting
and autonomic nervous system (ANS):
involuntary control/movement eg breathing

7. Neurons: nerve cells
• Neurons are highly specialised cells, elongated
with branches (dendrites) at the end to connect
with other neurons
• Bundles of neurons make a nerve
• Nerves connect to make circuits:
- Sensory nerves contain neurons that receive
information and transmit it back to the brain
- Motor nerves contain neurons that receive
information from the brain that causes them to
move.
