2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A landscape, is every visible features across a viewed area of Land, including the Sky, Hills, land forms, Rivers,
Buildings and structures, Plants, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal.
If an area of land is “Landscaped” it is changed to make it more attractive OR less attractive. the elements of a
landscape can determine if people find it attractive or not. thus, a good and aesthetically pleasing land scape will depend
on the proper manipulation of both the major and minor elements of the land scape.
This work provides information on the design of a sitout garden, proposed for the NDDC Hostel building, Located in the
Rivers State Universtity, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria.

A Garden sitout provides a natural setting for the purpose of relaxation and recreation.
A large garden sitout especially those found in cities e.g Central business districts
(CBD'S) do not only bring poeple together, but help enhance the environment by
providing well organised green areas that are pleasant to the environment.

Landscape site has to be in an environment where it can be easily seen and appreciated.
Landscape site should complement a building

Although no solid data on topography has
been generated, due to the absense of a
topographic map, the land is observed to be
plain.
SITE ANALYSIS
The project site is located in Port Harcourt, which has a
tropical climate. Rainfall is significant most months of the
year, and the short dry season has little effect. This
climate is considered to be Am according to the Köppen-
Geiger climate classification. The average annual
temperature is 26.4 °C in Port Harcourt. Precipitation
here averages 2708 mm.

OBSERVATIONS.
FOOT PATHS:
Foot paths can be seen on the proposed site, created by
students who use the path as a short cut to their lecture halls,
instead of going through the tarred road.
walk way:
The site has an existing paved walk way that leads
to the hostels entrance porch.
drainage line:
Rain water is drained off the site via two canals;
on the south and western side of the site.
other hostels::
The site is located next to the F and G (Boys).
hostel. the location of this hostel has aided the
creation of a foot path across the project site.
access road:
The access roads to the site are located at the
south, west of the site, the main entrance
comes from the access on the south.
vegetation:
A mixture of Zoysia, star, and bahamah grass
forms the major vegetive cover over all visible
green areas. trees such as the evergreen whistle
pine can be found allong the south side of the
site.
deduction:
SITE ANALYSIS
The design should make provision for paved walkways to
allow students move to their lecture halls
The coolness of the environment can be enhanced by
introducing pools, or fountains. along side trees.
Sitting areas should be a little detached form the
environment around to allow concentration of students
who wish to study. they should also have trees planted
around them to reduce the effect of wind, rain and
sunlight.
