Physician DispensingA Growing Trend Between Medical Practices <br /> <br />Physician dispensing is the process of distributing pre-packaged medications directly to your patients at the point of care. Many providers are adding physician drug dispensing to their practices as a way to heighten the patient experience and increase medical practice revenue to replace the continued erosion of declining insurance reimbursements and offset increasing overhead. <br />Physicians dispense drugs out of their offices for several reasons. These may include:<br />•To allow the patient to start taking the drug immediately. <br />•To determine the most appropriate medication and dosage. <br />•To assist a patient for whom it is inconvenient to go to a pharmacy. <br />•To increase revenue for the physician. <br />Patients overwhelmingly, if given the choice, would rather receive the needed medication from you verses going to the pharmacy. Patients who are sick, in pain, post-op, or simply too busy will appreciate the convenience and security that comes with receiving their medications directly from their healthcare provider. Patients often go to the pharmacy only to be told that they must wait to have their prescription filled or pay cash for the needed medication because the proof of insurance is unavailable. AARP studies suggest as many as 30% of all prescriptions go unfilled each year, office dispensing is more likely to assure compliance. Prescriptions dispensed at the offices are generally significantly less expensive than those filled at the local pharmacy. In-office medication dispensing ensures your patients have their medications in hand before they leave your office. In pharmacies, the error factor is around 5-10%.
