where the government controls everything including

wages but also has caused massive pollution
E. The Northern economic region is hot & dryer so

produce textiles, chemicals, electronics & airplanes

F. The Southern economic region is humid and
grows rice & raise silkworms on terraced farms.
Factories produce ships, machinery, textiles, &
electrical equipment.
G. The Western economic region has grasslands so
herders can raise yaks & sheep. Farmers grow
corn & wheat. The region is rich in Petroleum
H. Hong Kong & Macau became independent in
1997 & 1999 they act as a center for trade &
business in China

A. China is 4,000 years old and was ruled by emperors in
dynasties who lived in the Imperial Palace in Beijing
B. Over time the Great wall of China was built to protect
China from the north and still stands today
C. They were the first to use paper and created silk,
clocks, the magnetic compass, book, gunpowder and
fireworks
D. Other countries used force to make China trade goods
E. After WWII the Nationalist Party under Chiang Kai-
shek went to war with the Communist Party under
Mao Zedong. Zedong won and established China while
the Nationalists fled to Taiwan
10. V. China’s Government & Society
A. Communist ruled with an iron fist and killed
anyone who opposed them like in Tiananmen
square and Euthanasia. China’s government
also took over Tibet and exiled the Dalai Lama
B. 70% of people live in rural areas and still use
hand tools. Villages grow food for the people
that live there and have community centers
C. People are moving to cities to find work and are
crowded
11. VI. China’s Religion
A. People followed the teachings of Confucius that
said people need to be kind, honest, brave and
wise. Children were to obey their parents and
everyone had respect for the elderly & rulers
B. People also believed in Daoism that said people
should live simply and be one with nature
C. Later Buddhism came in and taught people to
pray and do good deeds.
D. Religion helped influence the way society was
organized

A. Chinese are known for their many art forms
including architecture that include pagodas or
Buddhist temples
B. Silk screens, calligraphy and porcelain were
started in China
C. Chinese Food is varied depending on the region
people live. A typical meal consists of
vegetables with bits of meat or seafood with
rice or noodles. Many dishes are spicy and stir
fry is common.
