3. SCANNING
A reading technique to be
used when you want to
find specific information
quickly. In scanning you
have a question in your
mind and you read a
passage only to find the
answer, ignoring unrelated
information.
4. How to Scan:
* State the specific information you are looking
for.
* Try to anticipate how the answer will appear
and what clues you might use to help you
locate the answer. For example, if you were
looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the
paragraph looking only for numbers.
* Use headings and any other aids that will help
you identify which sections might contain the
information you are looking for.
* Selectively read and skip through sections of
the passage.
5. Milkman David Sandedge has ended his
doorstop deliveries on Merseyside, after 63
years. David was just seven years old when he
took up his job. He left his first pint of milk at
a front door on Handover Drive. He used to
help his father deliver the milk.
In 1953, David and his father had 7,500

of milk for regular customers. From now on
we will all have to buy milk from shops and
supermarkets.

8. In today’s world, nearly every aspect of life relies on
computer technology. It is used for business, public
services, education and entertainment. This
development has become quite alarming. People are
concerned over the loss of vital skills as computer
technology replaces traditional ways of working in a
variety of areas from art and design to banking and food
industries. Chaos can happen when a computer system
fail, leading to the breakdown of essential services such
as transport, communications and utilities.
However, people would not be able to enjoy their
current standard of living without computer technology.
The world’s population today is bigger than it was a
generation ago. The fact that there is a sufficient amount
of food for everyone, that travelling from one place to
another is convenient, and a top class medical care is
provided for, is largely owed to computer technology.
