The
Flood
Genesis 6-8
The Big Idea
Noah did according to all
that the LORD had
commanded him.
Genesis 7:5 2
Why is this
important?
Why is this important?
The
Flood
Genesis 6-8
One Man
But Noah found favor in the
eyes of the LORD.
Genesis 6:8 5
Implies a written record
These are the records of the
generations of Noah. Noah was a
righteous man, blameless in his time;
Noah walked with God.
Genesis 6:9 6
Two outstanding qualities
Righteous
Blameless
7
Righteous
But the salvation of the righteous is from the
LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.
Psalm 37:39 8
Blameless
For all His ordinances were before me,
And I did not put away His statutes from
me. I was also blameless with Him, And I
kept myself from my iniquity.
Psalm 18:22–23 9
Walked with God
By faith Noah, being warned by God about
things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an
ark for the salvation of his household, by which
he condemned the world, and became an heir
of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Hebrews 11:7 10
God equips you to be a Noah
A. declaring sinful mankind righteous through the
work of Christ (forensic righteousness).
B. freely giving mankind righteousness through
the work of Christ (imputed righteousness).
C. providing the indwelling Spirit who produces
righteousness (ethical righteousness) in mankind.
D. restoring the fellowship of the garden of Eden
by Christ restoring the image of God (cf. Gen. 1:26–
27) in believers (relational righteousness).
11
Wrong “Fill”
Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and
the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the
earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had
corrupted their way upon the earth.
Genesis 6:11–12 12
Audio
Genesis 6:13–21 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the
earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with
the earth. 14 “Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with
rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 “This is how you shall make it: the
length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
16 “You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the
door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17
“Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in
which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
18 “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your
sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 “And of every living thing of all flesh,
you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be
male and female. 20 “Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of
every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to
keep them alive. 21 “As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and
gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”

The Important thing
Thus Noah did; according to all that
God had commanded him, so he did.
Genesis 6:22 16
Obedience has it perks
But I will establish My covenant with
you; and you shall enter the ark—
you and your sons and your wife,
and your sons’ wives with you.
Genesis 6:18 17
While building the ark
[God] did not spare the ancient world, but
preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness,
with seven others, when He brought a flood
upon the world of the ungodly;
2 Peter 2:5 18
One Hundred and Fifty Years Later
Then the LORD said to Noah, “Enter
the ark, you and all your household,
for you alone I have seen to be
righteous before Me in this time.
Genesis 7:1 19
The End is Near For after seven more
days, I will send rain on
the earth forty days and
forty nights; and I will
blot out from the face of
the land every living
thing that I have made.
20
Repeating
Noah did according to all that the
LORD had commanded him.
Genesis 7:5 21
Getting the passengers on board
Then Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’
wives with him entered the ark because of the water
of the flood. Of clean animals and animals that are
not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the
ground, there went into the ark to Noah by twos,
male and female, as God had commanded Noah. It
came about after the seven days, that the water of
the flood came upon the earth.
Genesis 7:7–10 22
Finality
So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all
flesh in which was the breath of life. Those that
entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as
God had commanded him; and the LORD closed it
behind him.
Genesis 7:15–16 23
Doors
1. Isaiah 22:22 I will give him the key to the house of
David(Speaking of Jesus). When he opens doors, no one will be
able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to
open them.
2. Colossians 4:3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door
for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ,
for which I am in chains.
3. 1 Corinthians 16:9-10 There is a wide-open door for a great
work here, although many oppose me. When Timothy comes,
don’t intimidate him. He is doing the Lord’s work, just as I am.
4. Revelation 3:8 “I know all the things you do, and I have opened
a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet
you obeyed my word and did not deny me.
24
Summary Judgement
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the
second month, on the seventeenth day of the
month, on the same day all the fountains of the
great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the
sky were opened. The rain fell upon the earth for
forty days and forty nights.
Genesis 7:11–12 25
Complete
Genesis 7:23–24 (NASB95)
23 Thus He blotted out every living thing that was
upon the face of the land, from man to animals to
creeping things and to birds of the sky, and they
were blotted out from the earth; and only Noah
was left, together with those that were with him
in the ark. 24 The water prevailed upon the earth
one hundred and fifty days.
26
A great phrase
But God remembered Noah and all the beasts
and all the cattle that were with him in the ark;
and God caused a wind to pass over the earth,
and the water subsided.
Genesis 8:1 27
What happened?
The rain had stopped
The wind blew
The water subsided
Fountain of deep closed
28
Port of call
Genesis 8:4–5 (NASB95)
4 In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day
of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains
of Ararat. 5 The water decreased steadily until the
tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day
of the month, the tops of the mountains became
visible.
29
Forty Days Later
Send out a raven
Fluttered around
30
Next
Dove
Genesis 8:9 (NASB95)
9 but the dove found no resting place for the
sole of her foot, so she returned to him into
the ark, for the water was on the surface of
all the earth. Then he put out his hand and
took her, and brought her into the ark to
himself.
31
Again
Genesis 8:10–11 (NASB95)
10 So he waited yet another seven days;
and again he sent out the dove from the
ark. 11 The dove came to him toward
evening, and behold, in her beak was a
freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew
that the water was abated from the
earth.
32
7 MORE DAYS!
Genesis 8:12 (NASB95)
12 Then he waited yet another seven days,
and sent out the dove; but she did not
return to him again.
33
God Speaks
Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your
sons and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out
with you every living thing of all flesh that is with
you, birds and animals and every creeping thing
that creeps on the earth, that they may breed
abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and
multiply on the earth.
Genesis 8:16–17 34
Honoring God
Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took
of every clean animal and of every clean bird
and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Genesis 8:20 35
God responds
I will never again curse the ground on
account of man, for the intent of man’s heart
is evil from his youth; and I will never again
destroy every living thing, as I have done.
While the earth remains, Seedtime and
harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and
winter, And day and night Shall not cease.
Genesis 8:21b–22 36
The Covenant Terms
And God blessed Noah and his sons
and said to them, “Be fruitful and
multiply, and fill the earth.
Genesis 9:1 37
Conditions
Surely I will require your lifeblood... And from
every man, from every man’s brother I will require
the life of man. Whoever sheds man’s blood, By
man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of
God He made man.
Genesis 9:5–6 38
Restates
As for you, be fruitful and
multiply; Populate the earth
abundantly and multiply in it.
Genesis 9:7 39
Covenant Continued
I establish My covenant with you; and all
flesh shall never again be cut off by the
water of the flood, neither shall there
again be a flood to destroy the earth.
Genesis 9:11 40
Most familiar part
This is the sign of the covenant which I am
making between Me and you and every living
creature that is with you, for all successive
generations; I set My bow in the cloud, and it
shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me
and the earth.
Genesis 9:12–13 41
Every Time
I will remember My
covenant, which is
between Me and
you and every living
creature of all flesh;
and never again
shall the water
become a flood to
destroy all flesh.

Editor's Notes

  1. Genesis chapters 6-8
  2. Genesis 6:22 (ESV) Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
  3. Luke 17:26–27 (NASB95) 26 “And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 1 Peter 3:20–21 (NASB95) 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
  4. Genesis 6:5–7…Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 The LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” Evil consists of choices
  5. Genesis 6:8…But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
  6. Genesis 6:9…These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.
  7. Righteous Blameless
  8. Noah conformed to the standard of his understanding of the will of God. Right standing right actions right heart and head. Psalm 37:39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.
  9. A complete heart towards the lord. Complete integrity moral perfection Psalm 18:22–23 For all His ordinances were before me, And I did not put away His statutes from me. I was also blameless with Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. Romans 2:14–15 (NASB95) 14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,
  10. Hebrews 11:7…By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
  11. A. declaring sinful mankind righteous through the work of Christ (forensic righteousness). B. freely giving mankind righteousness through the work of Christ (imputed righteousness). C. providing the indwelling Spirit who produces righteousness (ethical righteousness) in mankind. D. restoring the fellowship of the garden of Eden by Christ restoring the image of God (cf. Gen. 1:26–27) in believers (relational righteousness). However, God requires a covenantal response. God decrees (i.e. freely gives) and provides, but humans must respond and continue to respond in A. repentance B. faith C. lifestyle obedience D. perseverance
  12. Genesis 6:11–12…Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth
  13. Genesis 6:13–21 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 “Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 “This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 “You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 “Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 “And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 “Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 “As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”
  14. What’s going to happen Why it’s going to happen. God doesn’t keep us in the dark.
  15. Building plans Animals Housing Provision
  16. Genesis 6:22…Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.
  17. Genesis 6:18…But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. covenant. This term implies more than just a simple contract, or agreement. It carries the idea of a pledge and a promise. God says that He will establish His covenant with Noah. In this case, God wants Noah to understand that the Lord is obligating Himself to save Noah and his family from the coming destruction. The purpose of God using this language is trust. A covenant is a very solemn, serious obligation. Its worth is only as good as the person making it. At the same time, it implies that the one making the covenant is staking their entire reputation on upholding their end of the bargain. So, when God tells Noah He is making a covenant with him, it implies the most absolutely binding, serious kind of commitment. If Noah cannot place his trust in a covenant from God, he can't place his trust in anything.
  18. 2 Peter 2:5…and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, there went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. It came about after the seven days, that the water of the flood came upon the earth.
  23. Genesis 7:15–16…So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the LORD closed it behind him.
  24. Isaiah 22:22 I will give him the key to the house of David(Speaking of Jesus). When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them. Colossians 4:3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 1 Corinthians 16:9-10 There is a wide-open door for a great work here, although many oppose me. When Timothy comes, don’t intimidate him. He is doing the Lord’s work, just as I am. Revelation 3:8 “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. Repeat Genesis 7:16 (NASB95) 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed it behind him.
  25. Genesis 7:11–12…In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

  27. Genesis 8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. remembered” This term is used in the sense of God taking appropriate and personal action towards someone. The covenant God is about to act again because of who He is. Noah will be the source of a new humanity.
  28. The rain had stopped The wind blew The water subsided Fountain of deep closed Genesis 8:3 (NASB95) 3 and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased.

  34. Genesis 8:16–17 Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth. And they dod
  35. Genesis 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
  36. Genesis 8:21b–22 I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done. While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.”
  37. Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. We’ve heard this before.
  38. Genesis 9:5–6 Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.
