Dear Sir,
I am a 61 year old medical doctor, graduated in 1979 from the Medical School of the National
University of La Plata, Argentina. Specialized in Internal Medicine, actually I do my clinical private
practice at the Spanish Hospital of La Plata, Argentina of which I have also been the Medical Vice
Director from 2003 to 2007. I am also the Head Professorship of Internal Medicine in our Medical
School at the University of La Plata, Argentina.
I have done my last year of high school and graduated from Lenoir High School, NC in 1971-1972
as an AFS Exchange Student and studied english for many years so I consider my verbal, written
and interpersonal communication skills in this language to be excellent.
I am widowed and have no children so my possibilities to face this new Project with your
University including domestic and international travel and visiting of collaborators and other sites
of execution would be no problem for me.
In the last 15 years I have specialized in cell culture, tissue engineering and cell therapies. I have
developed during all these years the Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Cell
Therapies Laboratory at the CUCAIBA, La Plata, , Argentina, of which I am its Director. The
CUCAIBA is our Province of Buenos Aires, Ministry of Health Transplantation Program.
I have been mainly involved in the treatment of large burned patients at our Burns Unit here in the
San Martin Hospital of La Plata, and the Burns Hospital of Buenos Aires City, specially using cell
therapies. We have developed a strong research program in the use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for
burns including those of radiation origin. I have a large experience doing both the clean room cell
culture work and the patients care and application of the cell therapy as well as the management and
regulatory work needed for a Project like this one.
Also, I have developed, written and have been approved by our Regulatory Authorities (INCUCAI)
the first Clinical Trial in the history of medicine for large burned patients using Bone Marrow
Mesenchymal Stem Cells obtained from cadaver donors. So in this special area I have a strong
project management experience and a very well knowledge of the problem and how to deal with it,
probably unique in the whole world. I have a large experience in animal in vivo models as well as in
the treatment of Burned patients including those with radiation injuries.
I have intellectual, scientific skills and determination when solutions are needed. I have worked in
multiple scenarios like Diabetes, Immunology, Autoimmune, Cardiovascular and Metabolic
Diseases, Aging, Rheumatology, Large Burns, skin diseases like Psoriasis, Cancer, Organ
Transplantation and Regeneration between many others. Taught medical students for 35 years
having didactic, educational, management and leadership capacities. Former President La Plata
Internal Medicine and Cancer Societies, Vice-President Argentine Internal Medicine Federation,
President Argentine Diabetes Society´s Immune Committee, Vice-Director Spanish Hospital.
Clinician and basic researcher at the Immunology Department La Plata San Martín Hospital.
Founder and Director of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory, CUCAIBA
during the last 17 years. In this field and Nanotechnology I´ve accomplished many science
contributions developing a Research/Translational Program in Regenerative Medicine specially for
Skin Regeneration and other diseases with Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs). We published
improvements in rats spinal cord injuries using MSCs beside immunological species barriers. Could
MSCs be the Link Between Tolerance and Regeneration originaly talked about immune tolerance
between species using MSCs. We described MSCs in burned patients bloodstream establishing the
first Clinical Trial in the world using them for their treatment. Pioneers using Cadaver MSCs for
regeneration. We´ve been aging and metabolic syndrome pathfinders describing them as MSCs
Exhaustion Syndromes and cell therapies as solution. I´ve designed biodegradable Nanoparticles
(NPs) for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia with anti CD20 antibody Rituximab coated in their
surface loaded with Hydroxychloroquine and Chlorambucil. I´ve done the in vitro cell testing
collaborating later on, with the group that demonstrated in mice a 100% survival in the treated
group. NPs could be optimal for other cancers and autoimmune and skin diseases like psoriasis or
T-skin-lymphomas when applied locally. With the University of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico we
designed a Manganese Doped ZnO NP also for B-CLL when delivered with Photo Dynamic
Therapy. Being an option to be tested in skin diseases like Psoriasis. I´ve patented an intelligent
dermal matrix with NPs for the proliferation of MSCs improving burns also being enhancers for
dendritic cell vaccines. I´ve invented a novel device for MSCs culture and Small
Spheroids/Regenerative Units for Hair Loss Treatment. I´m confident for this position to develop
and implement a strong Research Translational and Teaching Program in Regenerative Medicine
and Cell Therapies for your prestigious Institution in order to understand and clinically apply novel
strategies in human diseases finding new therapeutics to disrupt yet unknown mechanisms of
terminal ill patients. It will be rewarding for me to guide or work with a team of interdisciplinary
leading scientists following the Institute's research strategies with all those many brilliant scientists
passionate about science, stem cells, regenerative medicine, cell therapies and drug discovery as
much probably as me in order to advance rapidly in the needed basic and translational research to
cure diseases. I´m firmly decided to conduct or participate in an internationally recognized research
program with clear clinical applicability in which patients should be the final most important
recipients of such developments. Accomplishing my expectations by working in a superlative
