2. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF)
was created by the United Nations General Assembly on 11 December
1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in
countries that had been devastated by World War 2.
UNICEF's programs emphasize developing community-level services to
promote the health and well-being of children. It believes that every
child deserves a fair chance, health, safety, an education, a new idea,
help, clean water and play.
3. What UNICEF has Done:
They have helped children whose lives were at risk in
developing countries. Almost 60 years later, UNICEF is more
than 7,000 people in 157 countries and territories around the
world. Nine of 10 staff members work closely with national and
local governments and other partners around the world.

5. Poverty
What is poverty:
- The state of one who lacks a certain amount of
material objects or money.
- It can include social, economic, political
elements.
- ‘Absolute poverty’: Complete lack of the means
necessary to meet basic needs (food, clothing,
shelter)
6.
7. Why we chose this topic:
We can see in school that there are several students under the FAS scheme. Even
though they are having financial difficulties, they are not facing absolute poverty, which
some of the people are suffering from. We chose poverty as our topic as many
countries face poverty and we that also think it is an important topic that needs more
attention to.
8. Why we chose this topic:
Even though several people know about this, it is not a very
common topic that is brought up as it may be quite sensitive
to certain people. We hope that we can share what we have
learned about poverty so that people would understand how
these people feel and that they are able to do something that
would be able to help those who are in need.
9. Here are some ways you can help fight poverty:
- Create Jobs
- Raise minimum wage
- Support pay equity
- Provide paid leave and paid stick days
10. Why is there this issue?
Causes of poverty are changing trends in a
country’s economy. Associated with the lack
of education, high divorce rate, a culture of
poverty, overpopulation, epidemic diseases
such as AIDS and malaria and environmental
problems such as lack of rainfall.
11. Henry Gillett, Theodore Richard Milford, Gilbert Murray, Cecil Jackson-
Cole and Alam Pim understood the many causes of poverty, and used
many tactics to fight poverty and inequality, ultimately founding Oxford
Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM).
What have people done to combat this issue?
12. What has OXFAM done?
When crisis strikes, they respond with life-saving support, and help people to rebuild their
livelihoods. Day in and day out they work with their community partners to find practical,
innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive – often by exercising
their basic rights as women and men. And from local communities to the global stage, they
call for fairness and justice so that people in poverty can influence the decisions that affect
them.
