Tips for creating a research question
1. TIPS FOR CREATING
A RESEARCH
QUESTION
Steps to success
READ AS MUCH AS
POSSIBLE
Perform a systematic literature review (if one has
not been done) to increase knowledge and
familiarity with the topic and to assist with
research development.
1
TRENDS2
Learn about current trends and technological
advances on the topic. Map your literature
according to trends, and take note of the different
trends in the literature.
GET INPUT FROM OTHERS3
Seek careful input from experts, mentors,
colleagues and collaborators to refine your
research question as this will aid in developing the
research question and guide the research study.
4 USE FINER AND PICOT
Use the FINER and PICOT criteria in the
development of the research question:
FINER:
feasible, interesting, novel, ethical, relevant
PICOT:
population (patients), intervention (for intervention
studies only), comparison group, outcome of
interest, time
CREATE A HYPOTHESIS
AND OBJECTIVES
5
Develop a research hypothesis from the research
question.
Develop clear and well-defined primary and
secondary (if needed) objectives.
TEST YOUR QUESTIONS6
Ensure that the research question and objectives
are answerable, feasible and clinically relevant.
