Lord David Puttnam spoke at an event at Sunderland University about the growth of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, the acquisition of companies like 20th Century Fox by larger companies, and how dubbing has become a major job in the media industry. He lectured the audience about watching at least 70 movies per year and was not impressed that many had not seen the award-winning film Coda. After discussing streaming services and Coda for over an hour, he concluded by saying this is a good time to find work in the media industry as studios are looking for new ideas.

David Terence Puttnam, Baron Puttnam, CBE, HonFRSA, HonFRPS, MRIA (born 25 February 1941)
is a British film producer, educator, environmentalist and former member of the House of Lords.
His productions include Chariots of Fire, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, The
Mission, The Killing Fields, Local Hero, Midnight Express and Memphis Belle. In 1982, he received
the BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema, and in 2006 he was awarded the
BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Puttnam sat on the Labour benches in the House of Lords, although he was not principally a
politician. In 2019 he was appointed chair to the select committee on democracy and digital
technologies. The committee published its findings in its Digital Technology & the Resurrection of
Trust report in June 2020.
I learned about the growth of streaming services and how platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have
grown rapidly over the last decade. He also told us about how big companies such as Disney buy
out smaller companies such as 20th
century Fox, and how the bigger trillion-dollar companies are
on a completely different playing field.
He told us that Dubbing is now one of the biggest most saw after jobs in the media industry
because so many shows need dubbing. He also proceeded to lecture everyone about how much
movies they watch, because he thinks you should be watching at least 70 movies a year. He was
also not impressed that many people had not seen Coda, because it was an award-winning film
that he really liked.
After going on about Coda and streaming services for about an hour and a half, he then
proceeded to talk about how this is perfect time to find work in the media industry because TV
studios such as the BBC and ITV are constantly looking for new ideas.
