5. Responses to the 2011 survey indicate that
job searching on social media sites is on an
upward trajectory. Nearly one-‐‑third (31%) of
respondents cited that they are using social
media for job searching — a significant change
from 2010 — with nearly half of those
surveyed also using it for professional
networking. In 2010, only 21% of survey
respondents said they were using
social media for job searching . {7}

7. Any employer with a modicum of common sense is going to vet you on
the Internet before even bothering to talk to you. In a world where too
many job seekers fabricate parts of their resumes, the Internet can provide
valuable third-‐‑party verification that you are who you say you are. {4}

In the past few years
alone, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twi=er and
other platforms have changed the way
companies of all shapes and sizes find and
source talent. The recruiter-‐‑candidate
relationship, once shrouded in formality, is
now far more conversational and
transparent. {6}
9. For job seekers, social media is the great equalizer. Everyone is a contender now. Social
Media allows each of us to establish a strong personal brand, regardless of any other
circumstances. Where we went to school, our socioeconomic status, geography… none of
that ma=ers now. All we need to do is prove to an employer we can do the job and that
we have the soft skills needed. And, of course, we must demonstrate we’re likeable and
a fit for their culture… easily done on social media.

To be in business today, our most
important job is to be head marketer
for the brand called You. {8}
12. As social-‐‑networking sites expanded, it was no longer quite so easy to have segmented
identities: now that so many people use a single platform to post constant status updates
and photos about their private and public activities, the idea of a home self, a work self,
a family self and a high-‐‑school-‐‑friends self has become increasingly untenable. {9}

15. Being a brand means
showcasing that which makes
you special, in a way that is
distinctive (recognizable),
predictable (consistent), and
meaningful (it allows others
to understand what you do
and why) {3}

about being a signal

capital. The stronger
your brand, the
stronger that signal.

17. The best part of social media is that it is free and open to all. The worst part of social
media is that it is free and open to all. This means that anyone can post anything. Your
Facebook page can be full of pictures of drinking fests with your roommates. Your tweets
can openly disparage your current employer. You can say anything. But what you say can
and often does get back to potential employers, who are increasingly using social media
tools to see what employees are really like outside of the rehearsed, carefully crafted
image they present in person. {13}

18. “If you don’t have a presence it reflects you’re not up with the times, not agile,”
Said Ms. Polischuk, adding that job seekers should call HR departments to find
out which social media sites are crucial.{1}

19. Today brands are everything, and all kinds of
products and services — from accounting firms to
sneaker makers to restaurants — are figuring out
how to transcend the narrow boundaries of their
categories and become a brand surrounded by a
Tommy Hilfiger-‐‑like buzz. {8}

20. As Albert Einstein once said,
“Strive not be a success, but rather to be
of value.” As the social media echo
chamber descends on our professional
lives, never before has this message
been more relevant. Instead of
measuring your progress using the
yardstick of external recognition,
optimize around achieving your unique
vision. At the end of the day, people
who tap into their deep intrinsic
motivations are much more likely to
succeed on long-‐‑term projects and
hit loftier goals than those who are
powered by the praise of others. Focus
on Achieving your vision first, and
you’ll be more visible than you can
imagine.” {5}
