Is located in the southernmost tip of Luzon Island, the largest island in the
Philippine archipelago.
The total land area of the region is 18,054.3 km2 (6,970.8 sq mi) or 5.9% of
the total land area of the country. Around 69.3% of the total land area is

3. Geology
Bicol Region is volcanic in origin and part of the Pacific Ring of
Fire. Known as the Bicol Volcanic Arc or Chain, the volcanoes
are the results of the Philippine Sea Plate subductingunder
the Philippine Mobile Belt, along the Philippine Trench.
Volcanism is evident by the number of hot springs, crater lakes,
and volcanoes that dot the region starting from Mount Labo in
Camarines Norte to the Gate Mountains in Matnog,
Sorsogon.Mayon Volcano is the most prominent of the volcanoes
in the region, famous for its almost perfect conical shape and for
being the most active in the Philippines. Its eruptions have
repeatedly inflicted disasters on the region, but during lulls in
activity, it is a particularly beautiful mountain. The southernmost
tip of the peninsula is dominated by Bulusan Volcano, the
other active volcano in the region. Tiwi in Albay and the Bacon-
Manito area between Sorsogon and Albay are the sites of two
major geothermal fields that contribute substantially to the Luzon
Power Grid

the samdong tree, which were both found in abundance throughout the island. Common
reference to "katanduan" or "kasamdongan", meaning a place where the tandu or the samdong
tree thrives in abundance, led to the coining of the word Catanduanes.

of Albay to the north. Sorsogon is at the tip of the Bicol Peninsula and faces the island of Samar to the
southeast across the San Bernardino Strait and Ticao Island to the southwest.
Sorsogueños is how the people of Sorsogon call themselves.
Most of the inhabitants of the province belong to the ethnolinguistic Bicolano and Bisakol groups.
Sorsogueños are very religious and fun-loving. Being mostly Roman Catholics, they are active in every

• DAET, Camarines Norte, March 30 (PIA) -- Crime volume in the Bicol region has decreased
by 30.6 percent for the period January to February 2012 with the total of 1,657 crime
incidents as compared to 2,385 for the same period last year as reported by the Philippine
National Police (PNP) Region V during the Regional Peace and Order Council Meeting
(RPOC) held yesterday.
PNP Regional Director PCSupt. Jose Arne M. De los Santos said that the decrease in crime
volume, particularly index crimes, is indicative of the successful collaboration of the PNP in
all other stakeholders in the region especially in crime prevention and suppression efforts.
Of the 1,657 crime volume, 972 cases or 58.66 percent were index crimes while 685 or 41.44
percent were non-index crimes. Index crimes prevalent was physical injury followed by theft,
robbery, murder, rape, homicide, carnapping, and cattle rustling.
The average monthly crime rate recorded was 15.76 percent or a decrease of 30 percent as
compared to 22.54 percent for the same period last year.
The overall crime solution efficiency for the period covered rose to 25.47 percent, a
significant increase of 4.09 or 19.13 percent as compared to the 21.38 percent rating
obtained during the same period last year.
He said that improved crime solution efficiency is the bright spot in the implementation of the
Police Integrated Patrol System (PIPS) and expected that the trend will continue this year.
(MAL/RBM-PIA 5, Camarines Norte).
• LEGAZPI CITY (7 December) — ALBAY PROVINCE registered the highest crime
rate statistics among Bikol provinces in the last quarterof this year with reportedly high
incidences of crimes against persons and property, and increased number of rape cases
reported in November this year.
26. Safety and Security
• This is according to PNP regional office spokesman Police Chief Insp. Jun Samson who
admitted nonetheless that actual comparative statistics among the Bikol provinces have yet
to be publicly presented; he added that actual assessment of statistics will be revealed in a
PNP RECOM-5 report at the end of this year.
• Samson also said that Bicol PNP Chief Supt. Cecilio Calleja Jr. noted recently the mounting
number of crime cases involving minor offenders.
• Cases involving minors were reported in Camarines Sur towns, mostly involved in theft and
robbery cases, and a robbery-holdup gang recently apprehended in Sorsogon City involving
minors from 15 to 17 years of age.
• Samson said that Calleja has ordered the PNP Regional Investigation and Detective
Management Division (R7) and the PNP regional Legal Service to look into the matter of
minor offenders being handed to the Department of Social Welfare and Development
(DSWD), and later returned to the custody of parents.
• Recent crime incidents showed that criminal elements are using minors in many theft and
robbery cases in Bikol.
• Under RA 9344, “The Juvenile Justice Welfare Act of 2006,” teenage offenders below 15 up
to 18 years of age are merely handed to the custody of DSWD until they reach the proper age
when they could be charged legally.
• Samson said that in many cases, minor offenders who were handed back to the custody of
their parents by the DSWD later return to the streets and often get involved in another crime.
• The police spokesman also bared that Calleja had lauded the efforts of the Police Intel-
Division and the Camarines Sur PPO for having neutralized in November this year, the
Nazaret-Lamadrid robbery-holdup gang.
• Reportedly, notorious armed-robber Roberto San Jose Nazaret, a former NPA rebel, and
Reymund Posadas Lamadrid, who both died in a shoot-out with the police were responsible
for the killing of a barangay captain, a salesman in Libmanan town, a grocery owner and his
son, and a Japanese national in San Fernando, Camarines Sur.
• According to the Camarines Sur PPO, four more Nazaret gang-members are at large and are
being hunted by a police intel-tracking team in the region. (SONNY SALES)
