What is Green Computing?
Green Computing is the efficient use of
computing devices {Resources} in other to
Sustain our Environment.
Green Computing should be considered in
•Designing
•Manufacturing
•Usage
•Disposing of this devices(Resources) such
as monitors, printers, storage devices etc.
Brief History
The term Green Computing was coined
shortly after the energy Star program in 1992.
Energy Star was lunched by US EPA
Saves 20%- 30% of Energy
Electronic Product Environmental
Assessment Tool
• EPEAT helps purchasers identify greener
computers and other electronics
• It is used to evaluate the effect of a product
on the environment
• It ranks products as Gold, Silver, Bronze based on a
set of environmental performance criteria.
Why Green Computing ?
• Sustain our Environment
Prevent Climatic Change
Prevent Global Warming
• Prevents health related issues
Caused by materials such as lead, mercury, pvc . Which causes
brain damage, kidney disease, cancer etc.
• Energy Conservation
leaving the computer on when not in use wastes energy
printing hard copies is not always necessary it is often
wasteful
• Save Money
Approach to Green Computing
• Virtualization
With virtualization, a system administrator can run
more than one servers on a singles machine

• Use Voip instead of Traditional phone call
• Use LCDs instead of CRTs as they are more
power efficient.

• According to the Columbia University Guide to Green
Computing, if the paper used each year for personal
computing were laid end to end, it would circle the Earth
more than 800 times

Conclusion
• In conclusion I would say that the government,
educational institution, financial institution,
hospitals, individual and other organization
should set and fully implement Green computing
policies in other to make the world a better place
for you and me by sustaining our environment
