The Paris Agreement
๏ง Was adopted on December 12, 2015 by 195 state Parties to the UNFCCC
Key Issues for the Philippines:
๏ง The Agreement maintains the 2oC goal of the UNFCCC but provides ample
support to meet a more ambitious target of 1.5oC
๏ง Human Rights, Climate Justice, and Ecosystems Integrity were concepts
included in the Preamble
๏ง Support for capacity building, with an important reference to developing
countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate
change
๏ง Enhances and strengthens the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and
Damage (WIM โ Plus)

The Paris Agreement Signing Ceremony
โข The Signing Ceremony took place at
the UN Headquarters in New York on
the 22nd day of April 2016.
โข The Philippines is one of the 175
countries the formally signed the
Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement Signing Ceremony
๏ง Signing the Paris Agreement marks the intent to ratify the Agreement, after
which the instrument of ratification would be submitted to the UN โ
Secretary General
๏ง The instrument of ratification, by consent of the country, would then be
bounded by the Agreement
๏ง Entry into force upon submission of articles of ratification of at least 55
members accounting in total for at least 55% of total global greenhouse
gas emissions
๏ง First compliance period is 2020 โ 2025
๏ง Countries have one year to sign the Agreement following which they may
ratify, approve, or accept the Agreement.
