The Structure of a Business Simulation

                                             Business simulations
                                             allow learners to:
                                             1. Observe data and
                                                information from the
                                                environment
                                             2. Orient themselves to
                                                the information
                                             3. Decide from options
                                                based on logic and
                                                analysis

    Lemonade Stand

    Did you notice:
    • The OODA loop
    • That feedback was immediate and qualitative
    • The overall goal is to make profit
    • That the game is non-competitive
    • That there are controllable (Cups, Ice, Sugar, Lemon, Pitcher Mix, Price) and
uncontrollable (weather, number of customers) variables
    • There are cause and effect dynamics (Demand and Supply) built into the
game engine (Higher Temperature = More Lemonade Drinkers, More Ice on
a Warm Day = Higher Customer Satisfaction)

© Epiphany Learning | Course Name

     Lemonade Stand – Some Thoughts

     • Add competition (leaderboard etc.)
     • Display profits after every round
     • Running graph of Operating Costs, Demand/Supply, Revenue
     • More precise control over what goes into each glass and how that converts
       into a pitcher
     • Chose location of stall (more complexity – get location through bidding)
     • Open multiple stalls
     • Make it social (play with friends)

© Epiphany Learning | Course Name

  • 9. Epiphany Learning Lemonade Stand Did you notice: • The OODA loop • That feedback was immediate and qualitative • The overall goal is to make profit • That the game is non-competitive • That there are controllable (Cups, Ice, Sugar, Lemon, Pitcher Mix, Price) and uncontrollable (weather, number of customers) variables • There are cause and effect dynamics (Demand and Supply) built into the game engine (Higher Temperature = More Lemonade Drinkers, More Ice on a Warm Day = Higher Customer Satisfaction) © Epiphany Learning | Course Name 9 Saturday, January 12, 2013
  • 10. Epiphany Learning Lemonade Stand | Simulation and Game Components More Simulation Less Game Competition Cooperation A model Simulations Games Rules of reality Participants Roles © Epiphany Learning | Course Name 10 Saturday, January 12, 2013
  • 11. Epiphany Learning Lemonade Stand – Causal Loops Profit d + Demand u + Revenue Temperature d u Orders u + - Actual Orders Quality Price d c c © Epiphany Learning | Course Name Supply c c – Controllable Variables u – Uncontrolled Variables d – Derived Variables 11 Saturday, January 12, 2013
  • 12. Epiphany Learning Lemonade Stand – Some Thoughts • Add competition (leaderboard etc.) • Display profits after every round • Running graph of Operating Costs, Demand/Supply, Revenue • More precise control over what goes into each glass and how that converts into a pitcher • Chose location of stall (more complexity – get location through bidding) • Open multiple stalls • Make it social (play with friends) © Epiphany Learning | Course Name How can you better the experience of this business game? 12 Saturday, January 12, 2013

  • 16. Epiphany Learning Chevron EnergyVille Did you notice: • The OODA loop • That feedback was immediate and qualitative • The overall goal is to have a lower impact • That the game is competitive • That there are controllable and uncontrollable variables • There are cause and effect dynamics built into the game © Epiphany Learning | Course Name 16 Saturday, January 12, 2013
  • 17. Epiphany Learning Lemonade Stand | Simulation and Game Components Less Simulation More Game Competition Cooperation A model Simulations Games Rules of reality Participants Roles © Epiphany Learning | Course Name 17 Saturday, January 12, 2013
  • 18. Epiphany Learning Chevron EnergyVille Questions: • What causal loops could you notice in the game? • What were the controllable and uncontrollable variables? • How would you make this game more real and less game-like? © Epiphany Learning | Course Name 18 Saturday, January 12, 2013
