Economical Disaster Recovery through Virtualization Mario Marquez Senior Systems Engineer – Canada
The number 1 reason SMB’s virtualize is for disaster recovery
Before Virtualization… Before virtualization only large companies with large IT budgets could afford “hot-site” disaster recovery (DR) DR capabilities required duplicate hardware and infrastructure and very complex failover processes As hardware and software at the source site were modified those changes had to be made at the DR site as well Hot-site disaster recovery effectively consisted of having 2 datacenters to manage Testing of backups almost impossible for the SMB
After Virtualization… Disaster recovery now available to even the smallest businesses Now complete failover capabilities can be obtained for any business far less cost than was previously available in the industry Virtual machines are portable and as such can easily be copied to alternate sites, DR facilities or co-located servers for quick resumption of business in the event of a failure or catastrophe Testing backups becomes as simple as the click of a button
The Cost of Downtime What would a major disruption cost your company per hour? Key Takeaways ,[object Object]

Editor's Notes

  1. Customers require data replication as one of the main components to their disaster recovery (DR) and high availability (HA) strategies. Replication solutions also address the operational backup for applications that require shorter Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) than what traditional tape backups can offer. The most common type of data replication is array-based. It’s most prevalent in large-sized companies, mostly because larger firms have deployed higher end storage arrays that come with data replication features. These environments by nature are expensive and hard to deploy and maintain. For small to medium business (SMB) customers, these solutions are too costly. Therefore, they need an affordable, and an equivalently reliable, alternative to array-based replication.  The key challenges for VM replication:  Provide disaster recovery and business continuity with less risk and within shorter timeframes than backup solutions. Work within limited replication windows and network bandwidth constraints. Migrate VMs to distant data centers without sacrificing performance of production systems. Provide replication without significant capital or operating expenditures.
  2. In response to the challenges of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity, the ideal solution would…Enable administrations to meet shorter recover time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) for critical applications to support business continuity objectives.Provide VM replication with minimal configuration and by only replicating the minimal amount of data at the fastest speedReduce performance impact on production systems through asynchronous data transfer regardless of where the target disaster recovery site is located.Provide replication to all VMs at a low total cost of ownership (TCO) and for less than array-based solutions.
  3. And that’s what vReplicator provides.vReplicator is a VM replication solution that enables disaster recovery and business continuity by helping organizations meet recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) while offering a low total cost of ownership. With vReplicator, administrators can meet shorter RTOs and RPOs for critical applications to support business continuity objectives through an Advanced Replication Engine. Patent-Pending Active Block Mapping (ABM) technology and Change Block Tracking (CBT) optimize the data transferred by only replicating changed blocks of data and not unnecessary white space. Organizations can use vReplicator to reduce the performance impact on production systems through Asynchronous Data Transfer regardless of where the target disaster recovery site is located. And unlike array-based solutions, vReplicator provides replication to all VMs at a low total cost of ownership (TCO).
  4. The first capability vReplicator provides is a new Replication Optimization Engine. This enables reduced RTOs and RPOs with greater reliability, through automatic identification and resolution of previously failed replication passes
  5. White Space Detection detects and ignores empty blocks, resulting in smaller replications. This also dramatically improves replication speed
  6. Active Block Mapping (ABM) is a patent-pending technology designed to eliminate scanning and transfer of previously deleted data. This provides dramatically faster replications with lower network bandwidth requirements.
  7.
  8. Next is vSphere & Thin Provisioned Disk Support. This Enables the replicated VM to be created with thin disks and you can deploy thin provisioned disks in production without compromising DR storage
  9. Enabling ABM allows replication of only active blocks Blocks occupied by deleted data are not replicated
  10. Differential Replication Limits Replication to Changed Blocks only Without ABM enabled, both active and deleted changed blocks will be replicated.
  11. CBT limits replication to Changed Blocks only, similar to Differential Replication However, scan times are much lower resulting in significant faster replication times
  12. vReplicator is a host-level replication solution that enables disaster recovery and business continuity by helping organizations meet recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) while offering a low total cost of ownership.

  15. vRanger is a Windows .NET application that can be installed either in a VM or physical machine, running a windows OS. During the wizard-based install, it automatically discovers the virtual environment – making it ready to backup the entire virtual environment
  16. During a backup job, vRanger executes on backup jobs created by the user. When a job launches, it copies data directly from the source VMs to the target repository. There are no proxies involved in the backup process: data travels directly from source to target, making for an extremely efficient transfer.
  17. During the recovery process, the opposite occurs: data from backed-up images in the target repository is transmitted directly to a recovery point. If anything less than an entire VM is required, the recovery tools grab images, files, or objects WITHOUT image reconstitution, and present them to vRanger for saving to alternate locations.
  18. The benefits of Direct to Target architecture are numerous and a direct value-add to the BR process. The process is faster, more efficient, and less complex to operate and maintain.
