Proposal

Centre Name and Number:
York College 48357
Student Name and Number:
Ewan Wild 348136
Project proposal title and date:
That house 25th January
Main area of activity:
Film, more specifically directing
Rationale:
Over the two years this course has taught me a wide variety of skills and knowledge that I can put
together and use here. I have done several different projects in moving image that has helped me
in many different ways, due to the variety of what I created. Over time I have become proficient
with a camera and also with various Adobe products such as Premiere Pro and Photoshop. I
discovered new ways to speed up the editing process using techniques such as keyframing and
more complex cuts done with only a crop tool. This has made me confident that I can make a short
film that’s better than anything I’ve made before.
This year I think my first project, which was the client project, will really help towards this project.
It’s where I learnt a lot about depth of field and how important post-production can be to making a
video as good as it can be.
Project Concept:
The concept of my project is a short film which portrays someone who hates their neighbour.
They’re not a nice person however they feel like they have a reason. Each day they go past this
house and everything looks normal, however they believe it’s too normal. The neighbours are
nothing but nice, however they seem too nice. This person eventually ends up cracking and
breaking into their house to find something that they don’t want to see.
An extremely important part of the project will be in the pre-production PowerPoint when I
complete my shot list. I have a very specific idea of what I want to do in my head and so it is critical
that I write that down as I see it. Cinematography will be very important in this short film and so
getting the shot list right will arguably be one of the most important areas in pre-production. It will
also take time to choose the music, which I will do beforehand, as getting the right song choices
right is very important. If I use the wrong song, everything about my short film will just seem off. I
have some choices in my head, but I will have to watch some short films which are a similar style
to mine to see what music they use, which will perhaps give me more inspiration.
A large area of my research will be on other dark comedies. Comedy is very difficult to do well,
especially for a student film, and so I’ll have to see how others do their jokes while still keeping
tension and serious moments. I will also do a survey in which I will ask people questions such as
recommending their favourite dark comedies. This way I will have a wider array of films and tv
shows to research. As well as this I can ask what they like and don’t like about this genre,
hopefully steering away from things that people don’t like.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Pre-production – Pre-
proposal, Proposal,
contextual, and film theory.
 Complete my Pre-Proposal I Write a very brief
summary of what I want to make and how I will
do it.
 Proposal – begin writing much more detail than in
the pre-proposal. I may not finish it right away as
I’d be adding things to the bibliography as I go
on, however I can get most of it done right away.
 Film Theory – In a powerpoint with my contextual
research, talk about film theory and how it will fit
in with my short film
 Contextual Research – linking in with film theory,
talk about what directors have done in
comparison to what I want to do, and how I think
they’re an inspiration
 Video – To pair with the contextual research,
make a video explaining all my contextual
research in more detail
2 Pre-production - Research  Existing Products – Start with research on other
dark comedies similar to mine. What makes them
good and how they find the balance between
comedy and drama. As well as this, do some on
other areas, such as posters and trailers.
 Subject Research – Research about the actual
history of dark comedies. As well as this, maybe
research different cinematic styles.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
The main way I will evaluate my work is by going through everything piece by piece and talk about
what worked and what didn’t. This itself will be done in two ways, through an evaluation
PowerPoint at the end of the project, and a weekly reflection which will be done throughout the
project, which will show what I think I’ve done well and also what I could improve on. As well as
evaluating it myself, I will show what I’ve done to other people and allow them to tell me what I’ve
done well and what I need to do better. This will be very important as multiple opinions are much
better, as well as seeing my project from a different perspective. All of these opinions from other
people will then be worked into another evaluation where I will analyse common trends in my
feedback.
Proposal
3
3 Pre-production - Research  Primary Audience Research – Create a survey
and share it online about what people may want
from this genre, as well as what they don’t want.
From this I will find common themes and analyse
them, creating a list of things I could include as
well as avoid.
 Secondary Audience Research – Looking up a
variety of reviews made about other similar
products, some of which I may have already
talked about in existing products. This gives me
more of an idea about the opinions of
professionals, again giving me an idea of what to
include and avoid
4 Pre-production - Experiments  The first week of experiments I will actually
complete them. It will be a variety of experiments
from trying out new transitions I haven’t tried
before, to trying new things on photoshop for
when the time comes to create a poster for my
short film.
5 Pre-production - Experiments  The second week of experiments will be spent
finishing off the experiments, but most of it will be
spent typing up the information about them. I’ll
talk about what went well and what I can improve
on when I move onto production. As well as this I
can decide whether or not I actually want to use
them, as they may turn out to not be very good.
6 Pre-production – Planning  Start with earlier plans to figure out colour
schemes for the clothing and posters. Create
mindmaps to create a more in depth idea, and
then analyse it to see what would and wouldn’t
work. As well as this, create a basic outline of the
poster, perhaps creating different ideas and
choosing the best one.
7 Pre-production – Pre
Production Powerpoint
 Finish off this powerpoint. As well as the other
items from the week before, I will need a lot more
for pre-production. I will complete Problem
solving, a shotlist, talk about font choices, and
music. A lot of smaller things will build up to
create a solid pre-production plan. Other smaller
areas would include a resource list, health and
safety plan, a more in depth production schedule,
and talk about whatever other extras I could do.
8 Production - Filming  At this point I go from writing a weekly reflection
to a daily one. The first week will be spent filming,
however I can’t do that while in lessons, so
during class time I will begin with my film poster.
There’s only so much I can do for this as I will be
using my own photography, but everything apart
from that could be done.
9 Production – Poster and
Editing
 By this point, I hope to have filming done so I can
then move onto editing. Before I start it however,
I will need to finish the poster as I don’t want to
have two unfinished jobs at the same time. So I
will probably get editing started on the second
day of the week. It will mostly just be putting the
footage together before I mess with the effects
and sounds, so I get a simple base product and
slowly make it more advanced from there.
10 Production - Editing  The third week will hopefully be the last of editing
Proposal
4
the main short film. I will spend this week doing
the more complex areas of editing, fixing the
sound, adjusting the colour and just tweaking it in
ways that make it better.
11 Production - trailer  This week will be spent creating a trailer for my
short film. During filming I will get some extra
footage and non-diegetic commentary for a voice
over for the trailer, making it different to the short
film and not giving away all of the story.
12 Production  For this week I will have two main jobs, creating
any other extra bits that I had planned, such as a
shirt (I haven’t done any research for extras yet).
But I will also be taking feedback for my products
from people. From there I will begin to make
changes to my products that people have
suggested.
13 Production  The last week will be spent on improvements
from the feedback I receive from people. This will
make my product better, before I finally put it onto
my website as finished, and no improvements will
be able to be made after that.
14 Evaluation  Go through each area both in pre-production and
production to see what I thought I did well and
what I could do better next time.
 Create a video analysis of my short film
15 Evaluation  Go through people’s comments and create a
summary of what I did well and badly according
to other people. Also mention how I could
improve if I were to do this again.
16 Evaluation  Create a script for going through my short film
and other areas of production for a presentation.
It’s possible that I could just use the video
analysis that I planned earlier.
17 Moderation  We are not in college for moderation week, so I
will be able to start preparing for the show.
 Plan an event, possibly with others, in which we
screen our short films and whatever other thing’s
we’re doing, whether someone is specializing in
film or animation
18 Show Preparation  Make sure everything is up to the standard I want
it to be for the show.
19 Show  Have my short film ready to be shown

Y2 FMP Proposal

  • 1. Proposal 1 Centre Name and Number: York College 48357 Student Name and Number: Ewan Wild 348136 Project proposal title and date: That house 25th January Main area of activity: Film, more specifically directing Rationale: Over the two years this course has taught me a wide variety of skills and knowledge that I can put together and use here. I have done several different projects in moving image that has helped me in many different ways, due to the variety of what I created. Over time I have become proficient with a camera and also with various Adobe products such as Premiere Pro and Photoshop. I discovered new ways to speed up the editing process using techniques such as keyframing and more complex cuts done with only a crop tool. This has made me confident that I can make a short film that’s better than anything I’ve made before. This year I think my first project, which was the client project, will really help towards this project. It’s where I learnt a lot about depth of field and how important post-production can be to making a video as good as it can be. Project Concept: The concept of my project is a short film which portrays someone who hates their neighbour. They’re not a nice person however they feel like they have a reason. Each day they go past this house and everything looks normal, however they believe it’s too normal. The neighbours are nothing but nice, however they seem too nice. This person eventually ends up cracking and breaking into their house to find something that they don’t want to see. An extremely important part of the project will be in the pre-production PowerPoint when I complete my shot list. I have a very specific idea of what I want to do in my head and so it is critical that I write that down as I see it. Cinematography will be very important in this short film and so getting the shot list right will arguably be one of the most important areas in pre-production. It will also take time to choose the music, which I will do beforehand, as getting the right song choices right is very important. If I use the wrong song, everything about my short film will just seem off. I have some choices in my head, but I will have to watch some short films which are a similar style to mine to see what music they use, which will perhaps give me more inspiration. A large area of my research will be on other dark comedies. Comedy is very difficult to do well, especially for a student film, and so I’ll have to see how others do their jokes while still keeping tension and serious moments. I will also do a survey in which I will ask people questions such as recommending their favourite dark comedies. This way I will have a wider array of films and tv shows to research. As well as this I can ask what they like and don’t like about this genre, hopefully steering away from things that people don’t like.

The Devil’s Backbone (Del Toro, 2001) 10. Wild, Ewan (2020) Target Audience Research Survey (conducted on 4/2/2020) Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks 1 Pre-production – Pre- proposal, Proposal, contextual, and film theory.  Complete my Pre-Proposal I Write a very brief summary of what I want to make and how I will do it.  Proposal – begin writing much more detail than in the pre-proposal. I may not finish it right away as I’d be adding things to the bibliography as I go on, however I can get most of it done right away.  Film Theory – In a powerpoint with my contextual research, talk about film theory and how it will fit in with my short film  Contextual Research – linking in with film theory, talk about what directors have done in comparison to what I want to do, and how I think they’re an inspiration  Video – To pair with the contextual research, make a video explaining all my contextual research in more detail 2 Pre-production - Research  Existing Products – Start with research on other dark comedies similar to mine. What makes them good and how they find the balance between comedy and drama. As well as this, do some on other areas, such as posters and trailers.  Subject Research – Research about the actual history of dark comedies. As well as this, maybe research different cinematic styles. How will the project be evaluated and reviewed: The main way I will evaluate my work is by going through everything piece by piece and talk about what worked and what didn’t. This itself will be done in two ways, through an evaluation PowerPoint at the end of the project, and a weekly reflection which will be done throughout the project, which will show what I think I’ve done well and also what I could improve on. As well as evaluating it myself, I will show what I’ve done to other people and allow them to tell me what I’ve done well and what I need to do better. This will be very important as multiple opinions are much better, as well as seeing my project from a different perspective. All of these opinions from other people will then be worked into another evaluation where I will analyse common trends in my feedback.
  • 3. Proposal 3 3 Pre-production - Research  Primary Audience Research – Create a survey and share it online about what people may want from this genre, as well as what they don’t want. From this I will find common themes and analyse them, creating a list of things I could include as well as avoid.  Secondary Audience Research – Looking up a variety of reviews made about other similar products, some of which I may have already talked about in existing products. This gives me more of an idea about the opinions of professionals, again giving me an idea of what to include and avoid 4 Pre-production - Experiments  The first week of experiments I will actually complete them. It will be a variety of experiments from trying out new transitions I haven’t tried before, to trying new things on photoshop for when the time comes to create a poster for my short film. 5 Pre-production - Experiments  The second week of experiments will be spent finishing off the experiments, but most of it will be spent typing up the information about them. I’ll talk about what went well and what I can improve on when I move onto production. As well as this I can decide whether or not I actually want to use them, as they may turn out to not be very good. 6 Pre-production – Planning  Start with earlier plans to figure out colour schemes for the clothing and posters. Create mindmaps to create a more in depth idea, and then analyse it to see what would and wouldn’t work. As well as this, create a basic outline of the poster, perhaps creating different ideas and choosing the best one. 7 Pre-production – Pre Production Powerpoint  Finish off this powerpoint. As well as the other items from the week before, I will need a lot more for pre-production. I will complete Problem solving, a shotlist, talk about font choices, and music. A lot of smaller things will build up to create a solid pre-production plan. Other smaller areas would include a resource list, health and safety plan, a more in depth production schedule, and talk about whatever other extras I could do. 8 Production - Filming  At this point I go from writing a weekly reflection to a daily one. The first week will be spent filming, however I can’t do that while in lessons, so during class time I will begin with my film poster. There’s only so much I can do for this as I will be using my own photography, but everything apart from that could be done. 9 Production – Poster and Editing  By this point, I hope to have filming done so I can then move onto editing. Before I start it however, I will need to finish the poster as I don’t want to have two unfinished jobs at the same time. So I will probably get editing started on the second day of the week. It will mostly just be putting the footage together before I mess with the effects and sounds, so I get a simple base product and slowly make it more advanced from there. 10 Production - Editing  The third week will hopefully be the last of editing
  • 4. Proposal 4 the main short film. I will spend this week doing the more complex areas of editing, fixing the sound, adjusting the colour and just tweaking it in ways that make it better. 11 Production - trailer  This week will be spent creating a trailer for my short film. During filming I will get some extra footage and non-diegetic commentary for a voice over for the trailer, making it different to the short film and not giving away all of the story. 12 Production  For this week I will have two main jobs, creating any other extra bits that I had planned, such as a shirt (I haven’t done any research for extras yet). But I will also be taking feedback for my products from people. From there I will begin to make changes to my products that people have suggested. 13 Production  The last week will be spent on improvements from the feedback I receive from people. This will make my product better, before I finally put it onto my website as finished, and no improvements will be able to be made after that. 14 Evaluation  Go through each area both in pre-production and production to see what I thought I did well and what I could do better next time.  Create a video analysis of my short film 15 Evaluation  Go through people’s comments and create a summary of what I did well and badly according to other people. Also mention how I could improve if I were to do this again. 16 Evaluation  Create a script for going through my short film and other areas of production for a presentation. It’s possible that I could just use the video analysis that I planned earlier. 17 Moderation  We are not in college for moderation week, so I will be able to start preparing for the show.  Plan an event, possibly with others, in which we screen our short films and whatever other thing’s we’re doing, whether someone is specializing in film or animation 18 Show Preparation  Make sure everything is up to the standard I want it to be for the show. 19 Show  Have my short film ready to be shown
