I am a resident of Manu Vihar living in one of the

We suggest to provide two traffic constables here

Subject Need to change the male mindset
Sir
Through the columns of your esteemed
newspaper, I want to draw the people's
attention towards the disrespect shown to
women in society. Every day we hear instances
of women being stared at. stalked, molested or
raped.
It is a matter of great shame that the status of
women has reached this level. In the land where
the goddesses Durga and Lakshmi are revered,
women are not being accorded respect and
their dignity is at stake.
The need of the hour is to change the mindset,
the thinking towards women, and give them the
respect they deserve. It is the duty of all parents
and educational institutions to instil such values
in children from the time they are born so that
they may never think of looking at women in a
disgraceful manner. It is the duty of all citizens
to improve their moral values and accord
women a status of dignity and respect they
deserve.

Subject To improve living conditions in slums
Sir
1want to draw the attention of the municipal authorities
of all big cities to the miserable living conditions in the
slums, through your newspaper columns. 1nese slums
are mostly inhabited t,y rural people who have
migrated to cities for their livelihood due to lack of
employment opportunities in rural areas.
As the houses in these areas are devoid of basc
amenities like piped water supply and sanitation, the
residents, particularly the children, urinate and defecate
in any open space they can find. This leads to their
getting various diseases like cholera, dysentery etc.
Further, there is no sweeping or cleaning of the streets
done, leading to garbage piling up. .
Toe living conditions of these slums can be improv~ if
the municipal authorities bring these areas under th_

low salaries
Sir
I was shocked to learn from a recent report in your
newspaper that privately owned and managed
schools in small towns and suburbs of
metropolitan cities pay teachers just a fraction of_
their authorised salaries. No wonder students of
such schools perform poorly - their teachers are
totally demotivated!
The Education Department of the government
must pull up managements of such private
schools by auditing their accounts on a monthly
basis. The department must also ensure that
suitably qualified and experienced teachers are
being employed by these schools, so that the
students get the education they deserve. The
grant-in-aid of these private schools should be

Subject National cricketers pampered
Sir
We have always wondered why Indian cricket
teams perform very poorly abroad, whereas they
perform wonderfully" when playing in India. One of
the major reasons is that many of the team
members are pampered a fol, being
accompanied by their:wives or even girlfriends
when they tour abroad. Obviously, the ladies go
along for enjoying a nice holiday along with their
spouses or male friends! -
However, having your lady love with you on tour
is definitely a distraction and it rriay also lead to
the team members skipping some training
sessions, which will ultimately reflect in the poor
performance of the team. In earlier days our
cricket teams on tour were not allowed to have
their spouses travelling with them. This system
should be restarted, as it will make the cricketers
concentrate on their game, helping to produce
better results for the team.

Subject Preventing school dropouts in rural areas
Sir
I have observed the serious problem of school
dropouts in rural areas when I visited my
grandparents in our ancestral village recently. Many
children of school going age were not attending
school and were instead working in the fields ,
doing household work or just loitering and playing
in the vil!age. Agreed that poor parents need every
hand in the family to work, but the parents of
children who were just playing have to understand
that an educated child will also make a better
farmer, herder or other professional.
Thus, parents must be made aware by the
government about the importance of basic
education for children, as it not only helps them
enter the right profession, but also helps instil
discipline, helping them in the long-t_erm.
I hope this letter will act as a wakeup call for the
concerned authorities to conduct such awareness
sessions in the villages.

Subject Miserable condition of street
children
Sir
Through the columns of your esteemed daily,
I wish to draw the attention of NGOs and
concerned authorities towards the miserable
condition of street children In the city.
Young children In the age group of 6-1oyears
spend hours collecting saleable material from
rubbish dumps to make a living for
themselves. In the night they sleep on the
pavements or in unhealthy surroundings. Both
of the situations are proving hazardous for the
health and psychology of these young souls.
Children are the future of India. Looking at
their condition, their future seems gloomy.
They should be admitted to a school
providing mid-day meals. After the school
hours they can be given vocational training
for a secure future. Orphanage houses or
NGOs can provide shelter to these kids.
A little care and attention from all of us can
make a huge difference in the lives of these
children.

Subject Problems caused by stray animals
Sir
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like
to draw the anention of the Municipal Commissioner to
the problems caused by stray animals on city roads. Not
a single day passes when I don't witness traffic jams on
the roads. The reason for these jams is not heavy traffic,
but stray animals roaming the roads.
These animals also cause severe accidents. Just
yesterday .I witnessed a biker chased by stray dogs. He
tried to dnve away and in the process he jumped a red

Subject Rash driving by bus drivers
Sir
Through the columns of your esteemed
newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the
General Manager of the Delhi Transport
Corporation towards the rash driving of bus
drivers from Noida to Delhi.
I am a regular commuter from Noida to Delhi
and have been witnessing rash driving by the
bus drivers without an exception. These reckless
drivers carelessly endanger the lives of so many
people on a daily basis. They flout all traffic
rules. jump redlights, do not adhere to speed
limits etc.
Students appear to be totally helpless and
sometimes even end up making the wrong choice,
which they regret later. There is no valid mechanism
to assess the suitability of a candidate for a
particular stream. Students take subjects forced by
peer pressure or parental pressure without realising
their own capabilities.
Hence, I feel that there is a need for educational
counsellors who can help the students to understand
their hidden qualities. They are required in every
school on a regular basis. Parents and teachers can
also play a very important role in shaping the young
minds.
The Delhi Transport Corporation needs to take
stringent action against these drivers. Despite
repeated pleas and warnings by various
passengers, these drivers have turned a deaf
ear to the passengers' plea and continue with
their rash driving. They should be issued very
stem warning and if required the non-compliant
drivers should be cancelled.
I hope you will publish my letter in your
esteemed newspaper so that this matter is
brought to the attention of the concerned
authority.

Sir
Through the medium of this letter I wish to
express my concern over the increasing cases
of drunken driving by the youth which are
leading to high casualties in the metropolitan
cities of India.
It is most frightening that alcohol-impaired
driving is one of the leading causes of road
casualties. Some youngsters often drive under
the influence of alcohol and then exceed speed
limits severely increasing the risk of severe
crash-related fatal accidents. The need of the
hour is to curb this evil. Possible preventive
measures could include strict enforcement of
certain rules such as suspending or revoking
dr,v,ng ilcence of drunken drivers, confiscating
the veh1cfes of defaulters, increasing penalties
such as fines or jail terms and mandating
alcohol education.
I ~ sure if the law takes up these measures
Sfnngently, cases of drunken driving are bound
to decline.

Through the medium of this letter I wish to express
my concern over the fact that the number of girls in
the rural schools is not rising to the desired level.
It is rather unfortunate that despite all the incentives
the government is providing to encourage education
of the girt child, their number has not risen to the
desired level in rural areas. Although there are.many
obstacles to overcome, issues like gender disparity
need to be addressed over and over again. There
should be schemes like awarding lhe villages which
show the largest proportional enrolment and average
attendance of girls in school. Such families that send
their daughters to schools can also be rewarded.
Moreover, a strong public opinion for girls' education
needs to be created in rural fndia.

Subject Advocating simple weddings
Sir
Through the medium of this letter I would like to express
my concern over the meaningless display of wealth
during weddings these days.
In the present day, lavish weddings have become a
trend. Hotels, farm houses and banquet halls are
booked months in advance. Even lower middle class
families are entertaining more than a thousand guests.
We need to invite only our relatives and close friends for
a wedding. There is no denying the fact that a wedding
is an important occasion but this moment of joy should
not become a burden for families.
An overcrowded gathering only leads to chaos and
unnecessary expenditure. It is always better to have a
simple wedding ceremony and set aside an amount to
give to the couple to start their new life.
I hope you will publish my letter in your newspaper so
that unnecessary money is not wasted on extravagant
wedding celebrations but is used to invest in building
the foundation of a happy married life.
Yours sincerely

Sir
ThroUgh the columns of your esteem:d newspaper, 1
would like to draw attention to the unlicensed underage
driving of bikes by school-going children. The recent
death of two fifteen-year old boys who hit their bike
against a stationary truck shocked the entire city.
Unfortunately this is not a unique incident. In recent
years we have read and heard several media reports of
under age unlicensed drivers on the road.
To address this issue we first need to understand the
high risks of underage driving. The best way to
address this road safety hazard is to provide road
safety education to both children and their parents.
They should also be made to realise how teenagers
are not only endangering their own lives but also the
lives of other. Not only can these accidents lead to loss
of life, but leave permanent physical and emotional

to lessen the commuters' problems.

Subject Inadequate parking on MG Road
Sir
Through the medium of your esteemed daily I wish to
highlight the problem that many people are facing due to
inadequate parking facilities in the Commercial Street at MG
Road.
Vehicles parked on the road sometimes cause a lot of
inconvenience to the people who are forced to remain stuck
in Jong traffic jams·especially during peak traffic hours. Many
a times accidents occur due to overcrowding of vehicles and
cause further chaos. It is my earnest request to the concerned
authorities to take-up immediate action to solve this problem.
This road leading to the Commercial Street should be made a
one-way road during the peak traffic hours, i.e., between 8
AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM respectively. Heavy fines
should be levi.ed on people who wait inside their vehicles in
'No Waiting', area. If these steps are strictly implemented it is
sure to-bring some relief to the daily commuters. I hope you
will publish my letter in your newspaper so that the concerned
authorities take up immediate action to solve this problem.

Subject Arranging special coaching in English
Sir
I am the Prefect of class XII - 8. On behalf of my class, I
am making a special request. Our English teacher was
on leave for more than a month. Our pre-board exams
are approaching and our syllabus has not yet been
covered completely. If she now covers the remaining
chapters in a hurry, we may not understand the lessons
well.
This will not only affect our performance in the pre-
boards, but will also erode our confidence severely. It
will also affect the reputation of our renowned school if
we do not perform well in the Board exams.
Thus, we shall be highly obliged and thankful to you if
you can arrange extra coaching classes in English so
that we get enough time to study.
Thanking you
Yours obediently

Respected Sir
I want to draw your attention towards the
increasing number of students joining the
school based on the increase in intake
capacity sanctioned and the completion of our
school building. Many of these students are
electing to take computer related subjects as
electives.
Our Computer laboratory presently has only 35
computers. It is estimated that in next
academic session starting in April 20XX, the
school will require 25 new computers for the
Computer laboratory to cater to the increasing
number of students electing.to take computer
courses. Thus, with 60 computers in total, we
will be able to conduct three laboratory
sessions simultaneously with 20 computers in
each.
You are therefore requested to release the
necessary funds so that the 25 new
computers may be bought before the new
academic session starts in April 20XX.

The need of the hour is for some vocational courses
to be introduced which can be opted for by the

Safety is everyone's prime concern. But how some people
neglect 1t! Everyday, newspapers are splashed with poignant
accounts of road-accidents. The s1tuat1on is made worse by ill-
planned, narrow and encroached roads as well as blatant
violation of rules of the road .
We, the commuters, can be held responsible for these
accidents too. Most of us lack civic sense. We feel proud in
breaking traffic rules or maybe we do not spare the time to
abide by such rules. We seldom wear helmets or fasten
seatbelts and keep using cellphones while driving until there is
strict enforcement of the rules.
The traffic authorities are also to be blamed equally for not
enforcing the traffic rules strictly. Though rules exist, the penalty
imposed is minimal. That is why people do not comply with
them. Some even indulge in giving bribe and are let off.
The need of the hour is efficient traffic management.
Encroached roads must be reclaimed, road signs must be
made accurate and installed where no signs exist. A sustained
public awareness about the rules of the road and strict
implementation of the law can effectively ensure road safety

our government should realise the importance of

Besides, games develop the values of teamwork,

children do not like to play outdoor games.
Instead, they stay indoors watching TV, playing
video games, browsing the net etc. Many of them
are becoming obese due to such habits.
It is high time that both parents and educational
institutions take initiatives to inculcate the habit of
playing outdoor games. Schools must provide
facilities and initiatives so that children are involved
in outdoor activities and games. Such initiatives
will also discover talented sportspersons, who can
then be trained for international competitions.

they are believed to e:3rn income and an

regarded as incomplete and a social
embarrassment. Contrary to this. women are
pinpointed as a curse and burden-. raising the
daughter is considered a waste of time and
money, and useless in terms of fami~

This mindset can only be changed by educating

empowering them to take their O'Nf1 decisions

result in a more egalitarian society in tt:-e long run.

Ans The Importance of Public Transport
by Karan
Transport accounts for a substantial and growing
proportion of air pollution in Indian cities, besides
causing traffic jams, parking space problems and
road rage. This calls ior a greater share of public
transport in meeting mobility needs. Public
transport has many advantages. The first is that it
saves fuel, reduces an individuars carbon
footprint. and reduces congestion. Public vehicles
move people quite efficiently while producing
significantly less air pollution to move one
passenger one mile. It is easier to implement the
usage of eco-iriendly fuels in public transportation
sys_
tems.
However there are some challenges in
implementing public transport systems effectively.
One problem is maintaining schedules, as traffic
congestion leads to irregular schedules.
Sometimes, even in metro trains there are
inordinate delays due to signal iailure or a power
outage. There is also the frequent complaint,
particularly in crowded cities, of less safety for
women commuters. A well-developed public
transport system has positive implications for
access to health care, education and other basic
needs. Public transport operators and
governments, therefore, need to focus much more
on improving such systems.

The State of Education Today
by Karan
Education is the process of facilitating learning or
the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs
and habits. It enables people to know the world
beyond their own surroundings and transforms
them to become rational and human in outlook
and world view. In this modem era, education is
no more giving knowledge or teaching a child to
know more about society.
Unfortunately, it has been converted into a
business in almost every institution. Such
institutions charge a huge amount in return for the
facilities they provide. In some of the best
educational institutions of the world, donations are
taken in return for registering an average student
and giving him education. In short, education has
become commercialised.

Illiteracy is found mostly among _
the old and
deprived sections of society. Children who are
deprived of education remain 1ll1terate. One of lh
reasons for illiteracy is rack of awareness. Thoug~
many efforts have been made by the Government
of India to make the old and the poor literate, such
efforts are totally inadequate.
The youth is not quite·active in making people
aware. Only the youth can achieve this goal
because they are full of energy and have
nimbleness in their actions. If the youngsters start
campaigns in various areas of the cities, towns
and villages, the rate of literacy can improve
drastically. If they create awareness among people
about the importance of literacy, people will not
resist supporting them in achieving their target.
Thus the youth must involve themselves in the

Healthcare to the Common Man
byKaruna
We all know that in India a common person faces many
problems regarding health, but if we all think similarly.
we should all become good doctors, whether we are in
government or the private sector.
Commercialisation of healthcare is good for the people
who can afford the best care, but some provision should
be made in all private hospitals for poor people,
common people and all those who must be helped
financially. These provisions may be provided to BPL
cardholders, persons having low annual salary, and
similar other people.
The infrastructure seen today in government and
municipal hospitals is very poor, and doctors do not
work with as much dedication as they do at their own
Pers~nal clinics. Sanitation problems are also seen in
PUbhc hospitals. Government should also have some
arrangement for the poor to subsidise costly medicines.
They may do so by making pharmaceutical comparnes
to reduce their prices suitably.
Such measures will definitely help to provide better
healthcare to the common man.

Commercial breaks are generalty disliked by
most of us while watching TV. yet ,a number
of advertisements are a source oi
information. They give us a fair knowledge

the market and enable us to choose our
options.
Advertisements are considered to be an
integral part of business which make people
aware of the goods and services available in
the market. They promote competition
among producers and manufacturers who
have to maintain good quality oi their goods
to ensure their sale. New products are
introduced and popularised through
advertisements. The consumer saves time
due to prior knowledge about the product,
its price, its features, etc.
Advertising is a very artistic way of
communicating with the customers with
great communication skills as its main
characteristic. Moreover they provide
information to the producers or the
companies about their competitors and
enable them to match the level of their
competitors.
Advertisements help to educate people.
Social issues like family planning, child

Every day we hear instances of women being stared at. stalked, molested or raped. It is a matter of great shame that the status of women has reached this level. In the land where the goddesses Durga and Lakshmi are revered, women are not being accorded respect and their dignity is at stake. The need of the hour is to change the mindset, the thinking towards women, and give them the respect they deserve. It is the duty of all parents and educational institutions to instil such values in children from the time they are born so that they may never think of looking at women in a disgraceful manner. This form of tourism, called 'Medical Tourism' earns valuable . foreign exchange for the country, thus helping us to improve the balance of payments position and strengthening the_ value of the rupee vis-a-vis foreign currencies..It also publicises the competence of lnd1an surgeons who are among the beSt in the world. S~ it creates a 'modern' imag_ e of the country compared to the earlier traditional image of India being a land of mYst1cs a nd snake-charmers. 7th September, 20XX The Editor The Times of India Delhi - 110002 Subject To improve living conditions in slums Sir 1want to draw the attention of the municipal authorities of all big cities to the miserable living conditions in the slums, through your newspaper columns. 1nese slums are mostly inhabited t,y rural people who have migrated to cities for their livelihood due to lack of employment opportunities in rural areas. As the houses in these areas are devoid of basc amenities like piped water supply and sanitation, the residents, particularly the children, urinate and defecate in any open space they can find. This leads to their getting various diseases like cholera, dysentery etc. Further, there is no sweeping or cleaning of the streets done, leading to garbage piling up. . Toe living conditions of these slums can be improv~ if the municipal authorities bring these areas under th_ eir ambit, charging the residents house _ tax and pr?v1dmg the necessary water supply and sanitation services by using the house tax collected tor this purpo~e. I hope the concerned authorities will read this lett~~ and take the required action to improve the cond1t1ons of the slums. Steps should, therefore, be_ taken to p~omote this form of tourism. Many children of school going age were not attending school and were instead working in the fields , doing household work or just loitering and playing in the vil!age. Agreed that poor parents need every hand in the family to work, but the parents of children who were just playing have to understand that an educated child will also make a better farmer, herder or other professional. I am a regular commuter from Noida to Delhi and have been witnessing rash driving by the bus drivers without an exception. These reckless drivers carelessly endanger the lives of so many people on a daily basis. They flout all traffic rules. jump redlights, do not adhere to speed limits etc. Students appear to be totally helpless and sometimes even end up making the wrong choice, which they regret later. There is no valid mechanism to assess the suitability of a candidate for a particular stream. Students take subjects forced by peer pressure or parental pressure without realising their own capabilities. Hence, I feel that there is a need for educational counsellors who can help the students to understand their hidden qualities. They are required in every school on a regular basis. Parents and teachers can also play a very important role in shaping the young minds. The Delhi Transport Corporation needs to take stringent action against these drivers. Despite repeated pleas and warnings by various passengers, these drivers have turned a deaf ear to the passengers' plea and continue with their rash driving. They should be issued very stem warning and if required the non-compliant drivers should be cancelled. I hope you will publish my letter in your esteemed newspaper so that this matter is brought to the attention of the concerned authority. Yours sincerely Vinita Yours sincerely Prakash ,···

In recent years we have read and heard several media reports of under age unlicensed drivers on the road. To address this issue we first need to understand the high risks of underage driving. The best way to address this road safety hazard is to provide road safety education to both children and their parents. They should also be made to realise how teenagers are not only endangering their own lives but also the lives of other. Not only can these accidents lead to loss of life, but leave permanent physical and emotional two years. In this way, the authorities can help to lessen the commuters' problems. Everyday, newspapers are splashed with poignant accounts of road-accidents. The s1tuat1on is made worse by ill- planned, narrow and encroached roads as well as blatant violation of rules of the road . We, the commuters, can be held responsible for these accidents too. Most of us lack civic sense. We feel proud in breaking traffic rules or maybe we do not spare the time to abide by such rules. We seldom wear helmets or fasten seatbelts and keep using cellphones while driving until there is strict enforcement of the rules. The traffic authorities are also to be blamed equally for not enforcing the traffic rules strictly. Though rules exist, the penalty imposed is minimal. That is why people do not comply with them. Some even indulge in giving bribe and are let off. The need of the hour is efficient traffic management. Encroached roads must be reclaimed, road signs must be made accurate and installed where no signs exist. The son preference or the Privileging of sons over daughters in accordance with a patriarchal system is a well-known Phenomenon in India. Sons are lauded as a 181 blessing or boon, as earner of the family lineage; they are believed to e:3rn income and an assurance to the family: they are caretakers of the parents during old age. A family without a son is regarded as incomplete and a social embarrassment. Contrary to this. women are pinpointed as a curse and burden-. raising the daughter is considered a waste of time and money, and useless in terms of fami~ / lineage. This mindset can only be changed by educating the female members of our families and by empowering them to take their O'Nf1 decisions regarding education, career and marriage. Write an article in 150-200 words on 'The importance of public transport'. You are Karan/Karuna. All India 2016 Ans The Importance of Public Transport by Karan Transport accounts for a substantial and growing proportion of air pollution in Indian cities, besides causing traffic jams, parking space problems and road rage. This calls ior a greater share of public transport in meeting mobility needs. Public transport has many advantages. The first is that it saves fuel, reduces an individuars carbon footprint. and reduces congestion. Public vehicles move people quite efficiently while producing significantly less air pollution to move one passenger one mile. It is easier to implement the usage of eco-iriendly fuels in public transportation sys_ tems. However there are some challenges in implementing public transport systems effectively. One problem is maintaining schedules, as traffic congestion leads to irregular schedules. Sometimes, even in metro trains there are inordinate delays due to signal iailure or a power outage. There is also the frequent complaint, particularly in crowded cities, of less safety for women commuters. A well-developed public transport system has positive implications for access to health care, education and other basic needs. Public transport operators and governments, therefore, need to focus much more on improving such systems. '' ,i

In this modem era, education is no more giving knowledge or teaching a child to know more about society. Unfortunately, it has been converted into a business in almost every institution. Commercialisation of healthcare is good for the people who can afford the best care, but some provision should be made in all private hospitals for poor people, common people and all those who must be helped financially. These provisions may be provided to BPL cardholders, persons having low annual salary, and similar other people. The infrastructure seen today in government and municipal hospitals is very poor, and doctors do not work with as much dedication as they do at their own Pers~nal clinics. Sanitation problems are also seen in PUbhc hospitals. Government should also have some arrangement for the poor to subsidise costly medicines. They may do so by making pharmaceutical comparnes to reduce their prices suitably. Such measures will definitely help to provide better healthcare to the common man. 10.
