Decisions of the 5th GSP Plenary Assembly • Clarified arrangements for establishing the Global Soil Information System (GLOSIS) • Endorsed the GSP Soil Data Policy • Endorsed the legal basis for a fully functioning GLOSIS • Established INSII as per the Pillar Four Plan of Action • Appointed the Chair of INSII (CSIRO Australia) • Appointed the GSP Soil Data Facility (GSP SDF) (ISRIC - World Soil Information).
Functions of the Global Soil Information System • Supply fundamental data sets for understanding Earth-system processes • Provide the global context for more local decisions • Answer critical questions at the global scale.
June to December 2017 • Global Soil Organic Carbon Map • Launch of the GSP Soil Data Facility • INSII 3 • ~50 attendees • Agreed on the annual work plan • Delegated the Pillar Four Working Group (P4WG) to manage operational aspects
January to June 2018 • P4WG is now meeting regularly • See the GSP webpage for detailed agenda papers, minutes and audio recordings of meetings • All P4WG outputs will be considered at INSII 4. • Draft technical specifications for GLOSIS • Draft specifications for SoilSTAT • Draft investment case for implementing Pillar Four. • INSII 4 resolutions will come to the 7th GSP PA
Immediate challenges and factors controlling success • Resolve the roles and responsibilities for developing the Spatial Data Infrastructure. • Avoid potential duplication in the support for regional soil information systems. • Improve institutional support and engagement starting with the next INSII meeting in October. • Secure $8.6M over 6 years to build GLOSIS.
Ingredients for success • Increase participation and ensure benefits for all. • Improve understanding and achieve consensus on the processes for decision making. • Develop greater trust between individuals and institutions involved in the design and implementation of GLOSIS.

Report on the establishment of the Global Soil Information System and report by the INSII chair | Neil McKenzie, CSIRO Australia

Decisions of the 5th GSP Plenary Assembly • Clarified arrangements for establishing the Global Soil Information System (GLOSIS) • Endorsed the GSP Soil Data Policy • Endorsed the legal basis for a fully functioning GLOSIS • Established INSII as per the Pillar Four Plan of Action • Appointed the Chair of INSII (CSIRO Australia) • Appointed the GSP Soil Data Facility (GSP SDF) (ISRIC - World Soil Information).
  • 3. Functions of the Global Soil Information System • Supply fundamental data sets for understanding Earth-system processes • Provide the global context for more local decisions • Answer critical questions at the global scale.
  • 4. June to December 2017 • Global Soil Organic Carbon Map • Launch of the GSP Soil Data Facility • INSII 3 • ~50 attendees • Agreed on the annual work plan • Delegated the Pillar Four Working Group (P4WG) to manage operational aspects
  • 5. January to June 2018 • P4WG is now meeting regularly • See the GSP webpage for detailed agenda papers, minutes and audio recordings of meetings • All P4WG outputs will be considered at INSII 4. • Draft technical specifications for GLOSIS • Draft specifications for SoilSTAT • Draft investment case for implementing Pillar Four. • INSII 4 resolutions will come to the 7th GSP PA
  • 6. Immediate challenges and factors controlling success • Resolve the roles and responsibilities for developing the Spatial Data Infrastructure. • Avoid potential duplication in the support for regional soil information systems. • Improve institutional support and engagement starting with the next INSII meeting in October. • Secure $8.6M over 6 years to build GLOSIS.
  • 7. Ingredients for success • Increase participation and ensure benefits for all. • Improve understanding and achieve consensus on the processes for decision making. • Develop greater trust between individuals and institutions involved in the design and implementation of GLOSIS.
