2. What is a LEED Pilot Credit?
• New credit (or
prerequisite) for issues
not currently in LEED
• Proposed by project
teams or member
companies
• Credits are tested on
actual projects
Pilot Credit 24: Acoustics (NC Only)
• May be included in future
versions of LEED
3. What is the LEED Pilot Credit Library?
• Listing of all available Pilot Credits, including:
• intent and requirements
• applicable rating system
• credit submittals (general and credit-specific)
• additional questions for feedback
• Interactive forum for testing new credits
• Survey and webinar feedback
• LEEDuser feedback
4. Using LEED Pilot Credits
• Awarded under IDc1 as part of
normal certification process
• New credits added twice a year
• Why use Pilot Credits?
• a preview of future credits
• participate in development
• might address innovative
Pilot Credit 53: Responsible Sourcing of Raw Materials
strategies that you are already
doing on a project
5. Life of a LEED Pilot Credit
• Proposed by project team or member
• Approved by USGBC Pilot Credit
Committee
• Posted to the Pilot Credit Library
• Projects test the credits and offering
feedback
• After testing, the credit is reevaluated
• Credit may be included in the next
version of LEED Pilot Credit 70: Green Vehicles
6. Pilot Credit #62: Disclosure of Chemicals of Concern
Requirements:
• Use a minimum of 20%, by cost, of at least 3 building
product and material types meeting one of these options:
1. Product manufacturer provides disclosure of chemical
compounds (chemicals of concern)
2. Product is third-party certified and disclosed
3. Product manufacturer declares chemicals present in
concentrations over 100ppm
• Chemicals causing cancer or reproductive toxicity are tracked
7. Pilot Credit #75: Clean Construction
Requirements:
• Develop and implement a plan to reduce particulate
matter (PM) emissions from non-road and on-road diesel
fueled vehicles, construction equipment, and temporary
power generation used during construction projects.
• Limit idling, prevent indoor air pollution
• Must meet stringent emissions standards, either US-based or
international
8. Workshop Session: Pilot Credits
1. Break into groups to discuss possible pilot credits.
2. Discuss a maximum of three pilot credits, either from the
short list provided or new points that you think of:
• What are the requirements?
• … performance thresholds
• … possible standards to meet?
• … documents to show that you meet the requirements
3. Present the pilot credits back to the group.
9. Workshop Session: Pilot Credits
How to think about possible pilot credits:
• What do you think is missing from LEED?
• What do you do on projects now that isn’t awarded in
LEED?
• What are some best practices in your country or region
that aren’t covered very well in LEED?
• What could you borrow from a different system, like
BREEAM, DGNB, Living Building Challenge, Passivhaus?
• Look at the current list of pilot credits!
10. Ideas for Pilot Credits
Short list of suggestions:
• Urban agriculture
• Prefabricated construction
• Moisture-resistant construction
• Responsible contractor practices
• Hazardous chemicals: building materials, radon
• Social sustainability
