2. What BLEANSA
• BLEANSA is an acronym for Building a Large
Evergreen Agriculture Network for Southern
Africa
3. BLEANSA Programme objectives
To create a network of organisations and innovation platforms for
coordination of research and development in agroforestry;
To review experiences gained from past research, refine and
optimize EverGreen agriculture, distil the experiences into policy
recommendations, and share them widely;
To sensitize policy makers to develop policies which facilitate the
wide-scale promotion and adoption of EverGreen agriculture;
To mobilize extension staff, farmers and other land users and scale-
up EverGreen Agriculture in southern Africa.
To investigate and pilot alternative farm income streams from trees
to optimise the economic, environmental and social outcomes of
the various EverGreen Agriculture packages.
To build the R&D capacity of the national institutions (including
tertiary institutions) in EverGreen Agriculture.
4. Long term Objectives of the BLEANSA
Network?
To be an EverGreen Agriculture and Agroforestry information hub
for southern Africa
To capacitate agricultural development agencies with knowledge
and information on EverGreen Agriculture and Agroforestry and to
scale up and out across southern Africa.
To continuously review new research results from different
countries or regions, to refine and adapt for local conditions and
where necessary distil experiences into policy recommendations,
and share widely
To continuously sensitise development agencies to lobby policy
makers to develop/ policies which facilitate the wide-scale
promotion and adoption of EverGreen agriculture & Agroforestry

10. Pilot testing integration of Fertiliser
trees into the FISP in Malawi
• Pilot project initiated in 2014/15.
• Initially we used Tephrosia as a fertiliser tree
but we have plans to include Gliricidia.
• Tephrosia planted in a relay.
• Targeted 6,206 farmers in the FISP
• Targeted 3,794 farmers who were not on the
subsidy.
11. Future Directions of the Network
• In the last 2 decades – regional blocks have
gotten closer and cooperation among countries
within blocks in almost every sphere of life is now
the norm.
• How can we share information and avoid
duplication or ‘reinventing a wheel’
• What can we learn from each other’s scaling-up
strategies
• How can we accelerate scaling up and out of
EverGreen Agriculture and Agroforestry
